Some observations about being a driver instead of a pedestrian:

I keep getting semi-lost because when I was a pedestrian I could whip out my phone and check the map while I was moving. You can't do that when you're driving, so I find myself making a lot of U-turns and attempting to go around a lot of weirdly shaped blocks in Marin, which by the way is not on any kind of grid at all.

I don't actually mind driving in and of itself. The act of driving doesn't bother me. But it does annoy me deeply that I have no choice but to drive most of the time, because of the state of public transit and how far apart everything is.

In my old neighborhood I found it irksome that the closest bar was 4 blocks away. The closest bar in this neighborhood is miles away. Lots of miles. No stumbling home from that.

I think driving vs. walking is my main beef with Marin, which otherwise continues to be peaceful, beautiful, and pleasant.

Yup. Driving sucks. That's why I live in town in DC. There are plenty of downsides, including obscenely high rent, but driving does suck. Marin sound nice, tho, overall.

A Tom Tom GPS device would be a wise investment.

Also trying to be more gutwrenchingly awesome; it is difficult due to my already near-toxic levels of awesome.

Be careful, woman! You ratchet that business up any higher and you'll blind somebody.

Is the drawing with purpose, or for the love ot it?

True fact, although since I recall being poor at drawing things that weren't, you know, women I tend to have to opt for the words.

I can get lost in a square room, myself, but somehow I never seem to get lost when I have an iphone with me. It;s as though there is a threshold of disorder over which I have to cross in order to reach "lost" status, and having a phone keeps me sufficiently below it as to never actually need one.

I have not had a phone since you left. I think I'm in Istanbul.

Ugh, driving blows, sort of. I liked it better on the west coast. Anyway, I don't know that shop and will check them out. I'm going to Lior at Tribulation here in Manhattan.

The convenience factor vs. the peacefulness of the country is one of my life long inner wars.. I want to live in the country and then warp to where ever I need or want to be.. ha smile

I just moved back to San Diego and am so happy to be using public transportation again. When I was in Indiana you had to drive miles and miles just to get anywhere remotely interesting, and then there was the major drag of driving all the way back where you came from. Now that I'm in San Diego, all I have to do is cross the street and I'm at any number of bars, and even a movie theater. Anyway, at least you know to watch out for pedestrians while you drive. That seems to be the major drawback as a pedestrian having to watch out for people who are completely oblivious to cross walks and the people who use them.

I drive everywhere, because im so non-conformist that i drive everywhere. The only drawback is that I use the GPS to get anywhere. It's like a handicap when im riding my motorcycle and i can't find anything.

But its indispensable in the car smile

Get a bicycle. With a good climbing gear, and some good high gears too. Ride it on gentle uphill rides until that's easy, then try harder rides. Marin is the most insanely great place to go bicycling that I know of, with the possible exception of Vermont. I agree with you that driving there sucks. And I know bicycling probably seems impossible, because things are far apart, and there are a lot of hills. But if you start doing it, pretty soon you'll wonder why you thought it was going to be hard.

Fake heterosexuality makeouts high five!

Less flippantly, seriously? Is that a new game, or an ongoing endeavour? I don't like being straight-girl pidgeonholed, but I don't like being sexuality grrl at work either. Decisions, decisions.
