Hyenas occupy a dark place in the psyche of the white man. They represent the reversal of what is expected, the orderly way the West views nature. People don't know what to make of them and have much trouble anthropomorphizing them the way they do other big predators such as lions. Are hyenas cat or dog? (neither) Are they male or female? What does masculinity even mean if a female animal can have a cock that she fucks a male animal with? Are hyenas scavengers or predators? (both). How do you sympathize with a creature that robs human graves and eats bones, that can take down the "noble" King of the Jungle?

It's 2AM, and I just read a bunch of Derrida about subjectivity of sacrifice in animals. He used the word carno-phallogocentrism. I can't explain it now, but I think hyenas might contradict his view of the animal, which seems restricted to the animals we consume (which in turn would expose the subjectivity he calls to deconstruct).

I'm really sorry you had to read that.

You have to admit that penis bearing females represent an impressive development of social form over reproductive form in function.

My adorable wee guinea pigs would often display female-on-male mounting behavior, one presumes as a dominance display. Cute little piggy prison rape is quite the common mode of expression.
