Yes. I think indulgence is good as a reward for being a good person. Life is hard enough, you have to enjoy.
However, you are correct, society indulges itself for nothing, then rewards itself with a reward for over indulgence.
Just look at the cars. I need a full-size truck for work and most people have cars bigger than me, with videos on every seat.
