So. I went to San Diego Comic Con for the first time on Sunday (and only Sunday). First of all before I give my opinion on this I just want to say that meeting all of the other girls was really great all of them were really really sweet.

On the unfortunate side, I am the type of person who goes to a comic convention for the comic aspect. I think the branching out from that aspect has gone way too far. It is to the point where I think they should make a separate convention for both, it would also make it less crowded as well. I felt so discouraged reading article after article, after article on the convention and the comic aspect was not mentioned.

I also want to take the opportunity to show love for all of the real geeks and nerds who really have a passion for the nerd culture. I really tired of people making the claim and not backing it up. It is not just a little fad you can go through. I don't really care if it has become "cool" or what everl (trust me, it wasn't that way before),I think it is pretty cool. But to be a nerd, you have to like nerd things, and do them. Don't wear a Batman shirt if you know nothing about him.

So I wanted to share a couple things I have read (and/or watched). The first thing is an article, and DO NOT THINK I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING IN IT! But it has some good points.

Fake Geek Girls

On top of that I found a video response which also has some good points.

Pretty much what I take out of these is if you are not interested in nerdy things just don't do it to get attention. It is not worth it to not be yourself, people will probably like you anyway! Also, if you haven't really delved into nerd culture but have an interest and would like to that is not even close to being a problem! I love to help others experience what I love to do, and even after the fact if you find you don't like it that is fine too!

I wish people could just be who they are. Any thoughts on this are much appreciated. I would love to know what all of you think about this issue.

Atleast you got to go even if it was for one day. The last days are usually the weakest at these cons. The best days are Fridays and Saturdays biggrin

Now I am extra sad I missed SDCC this year. Would have been amazing to meet you.

I dont really go for the comic books. I prefer the sci-fi material. But I agree that the branching out has gone a bit far. Not sure how "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia " fits the theme....lol

That being said, with SDCC becoming more and more over crowded the regionals comic-cons are picking up the slack. Cant wait for SG to start appearing at Emerald City Comic- Con in Seattle smile

I totally agree with you on so many aspects, there's people who go to that con just to see people in costumes and party, but you can't shun out people who respect the con and do wear that batman shirt, they may be new to the comic world and want to get into it
Like on Sunday I wore my wonder woman outfit, and I don't know much about her I'm more of a Marvel girl myself.
Or someone may not look like they are interested and know a lot of comic knowledge but end up totally upshowing me out of no where.
I've never met a fake geek girl myself all the girls there who claimed they liked geek things backed up...so I also find what you say interesting, maybe watching the video will show me.
I just think your one day at the con wasn't enough for you to make an opinion like that based off the con because I know about 15 out of 20 of the girls knew about comics and about half of us have comic or geek related tattoos.
It's unfortunate that you had to feel that way, maybe if you got to see more of the con you'd totally see all the nerdy lovers are still there and standing strong. wink

it was nice to meet you at the con. I fully agree it should be called pop-con everything popular is there. I spent a lot of time talking to some of the people in artist alley about it this year.

smile what about being painted into a Green Lantern outfit?

I despise the fact that everyone is trying to label themselves as geeks or nerds. I grew up being made fun of for being a geek. When I decided to become involved in something, I knew everything about it, and made it the center of my world, and everyone just gave me weird looks about it.
I met a fake geek girl. She says she's a geek because she doesn't like people, and watches tv all day. That's not a geek, that's a hermit. She also hates comic books and sci-fi movies, so I no longer talk to her.
Last night, I became blood brothers with my computer at 4 a.m when i cut my hand open and continued to work on the insides, getting thermal paste in my wound, and blood in my computer. That's obsession, that's geekiness.
I lose weight when a new game, or a new book comes out, partially because I spend my food money on my latest obsession, but also because I refuse to eat real food or see sunlight until I know that Hyrule will be safe once again. That's a geek.
A nerd is someone like my friend, Raul: PokemonRap memorized, every detail about every pokemon memorized. We even had all the formulas for all the moves memorized at one point so that we could do rough calculations on the outcome of battles. We get the same way over comics, mangas, cartoons, animes, etc.
No one ever thought we were normal. We used to be called geeks and nerds, but since that is a good thing now, we are just weird and creepy...
Sorry for the long rant everyone, I've just grown tired of the public and their stupidity.
Did you know that a large portion of people were upset over the new Spiderman movie because: A) there was no Mary-Jane and B) there was no iconic quote from the first 3 movies?
I don't think I can live in this world for much longer...

It's all about making money. My only interest in going would be to get the chance to meet some Suicide Girls in person. You don't have to be a geek or a nerd to appreciate Radeo in a Batgirl costume, or Lethal as Wonder Woman. Although SG has done some comic books, are they really a part of the pure nerd/ geek culture or are they just cashing in?

Geek seems to go along with Hip these days, people strive to do this because it makes them "cool", not because of anything in particular that they do. I sympathize on the Con though, it's weird to be at something with Comic in the title and have a ton of people there who know nothing about comics. Not saying you have to be hardcore into Marvel or DC, but come on! At least know some Vertigo or something... tongue

Well said! Plus it seems like 90% of people these days who call themselves nerds and geeks cringe when you mention MTG or DnD. Speaking of that, now I have a real bad urge to play MTG >.< Gotta dust those decks off some day.
