Ok, back to ranting. I am so tired of people coming in to where I work and bitching about how expensive everything is only to turn around and bitch about how we don't sell any "American" products. I actually heard something close to "well I'd probably faint if I saw anything in here made in the US" so I asked him "well, sir, would you be willing to pay an extra $10 for that?" "No! It costs too much as it is" "well, sir, that is why nothing is made in America anymore. It costs a lot more to pay someone in America minimum wage to make something than it does to have someone in China do the same thing and until we're all willing to stop being so cheap more things will keep getting outsourced". Old Guy-> "They need to make things over here so we can have jobs". "You're right, but we have all these pesky labor laws..." I got a funny look and that was the end of our conversation. Don't bitch about the way things are when you're not willing to maybe put yourself out a bit and be part of the solution!
And then there is the asshole who tells me he's been on unemployment for over 2 years and he "doesn't really remember" to look for a job. He tells me no one is hiring for the job he wants and I tell him that there are plenty of jobs that require no skills at all (like my job) so he should have no problems, to which I hear "nah, I don't want to do anything like that". Yep, this jerk sits at home watching TV and gets paid more than I do...and I am busting my ass about 40 hours a week. Stupid jerks and their sense of entitlement! What ever happened to the days where being out of work would've been something to be embarrassed about?? Now it's like a game to see how long you can sit around and let everyone else support you...and damn, I wanted to punch that guy in the face!

good call....the amount of times i hear ''oh i can't get a job..poor me, how will i feed and clothe my children''
and then the next day..''wow, i'm so excited with my new 50 inch plasma tv and my new car comes next week..woop!''

i work my fucking balls off every night, 5 nights a week, and its a luxury to buy my children a comic or some candy...and to manage to pay for new ink for myself?...well, thats an annual 'save up'.

but you know, it's a good job i work my ass off. if i didn't? the taxes wouldn't get paid and these sponging fucks wouldn't get their benefits........or their MASSIVE pile of xmas presents for their kids....

oh...i seem to have ranted too...

I'm totally with you. America has degraded into a Nanny culture of laziness and entitlement. Personally, I thing these attitudes start at the top. Way to go Washington D.C. It might also help if we had parents to actually raised and/or disciplined their kids too.

what is bad too is our medicare and social security programs. I understand that they are a good thing to have, but they are absolutely burying us in debt. I am totally prepared not to have it when I am of that age. The more I think about about it, the more sense it makes to skip buying a house and use the money that you would be spending on a house to put it into a tax deferred IRA account, and let that son of a bitch grow so when we retire we can coast

people bitch that nothing is made in America, when they don't shop at American Apparel or buy American made new balance shoes because they are too expensive.

I've seen video of the American Apparel factory in California and a sweat shop in India and I honestly can't tell the difference in working conditions.

Here's some irony coinciding with your post. My interview yesterday was with a Chinese based Telecommunications Company. Your points about cheaper labor causing a low COG is correct. I've been to factories in China. They are not sweatshops. They are clean, the people are smart & disciplined. They just have a much lower rate of pay. They have a much lower cost of living, but they still leave a good life.

However, in the past there hasn't been much of a middle class in China. That's going to change sooner than later. Then guess what? China's COG will slowly rise. We're seeing that a little already. Next stop for cheap labor...India.

Yes, do not get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone working in Chinese factories and being treated as slaves or anything, but I did read that a lot of the workers at the factory that makes iPhones are forced into working VERY long hours with few breaks. We are much more particular here about our labor laws than a lot of other places (probably thanks to the industrial revolution). Either way, unless we are willing to work more hours for less money and we are willing to pay more for our goods, some shitty corporation is always going to be willing to outsource to a country that will and as long as our government keep being a bunch of money-grubbing pussies that don't impose any penalties on companies that do this, it's going to keep happening...
