Massive ramble blog. Need to get a few things off my chest!

I am really pissed off and upset. I really want to do another degree so that I have the prospects for a life long full filling career.

I have got a BA (Hons) Photography degree and I finished in 2010. Since then I have struggled by with working for free and getting experience and it has just made me realise that anyone and everyone can do it, hence I just cannot get a job and I think I have fallen out of love with it now.

I then thought why not try and combine my interest of science and photography, so I began to try and find work experience even just a chat with Forensics teams/Police around London and the UK, then the Forensic Science service disbanded and now there is too many graduates/experienced jobless people so I haven't had any luck there either.

So the over the last few months I have decided to try and follow my childhood dream of becoming a Vet. I decided at 17 not to pursue this career just yet as I didn't feel ready/mature enough, and I lacked the self confidence (I always thought I wasn't clever enough)
I started doing some research, It would take me a long time and it meant be a student again for the next 5/6 years and graduating again when I would be about 30 years old, which was daunting enough but I really want this.

After looking around at all the courses (which aren't many) I finally decided to go for it. I would have to go to college in September for a year to do a Higher Education access course in Science which would allow me to have that final qualification to apply to Veterinary Medicine.

I knew that having a previous degree would mean I might not get full loans, but I knew either doing Vet. Medicine/Medicine/Dentistry is an 'exceptional' course meaning I would get help and also I am a mature student not supported by my parents anymore.

I rang Student Finance today and they confirmed my worse fears, I wouldn't be eligible for ANY help towards tuition fees. Which now due to the government cutting funding higher education therefore tuition fees going up. I pretty much knew that I wouldn't get much towards fees but to get NOTHING! Fee's are now £9000 a year and times that by 5 years.... £45,000!!!! Which is impossible to even save for. I think I wouldn't be as distraught if fees were still around the £3,500 mark because at least then you can try and save something and make a small dent but with £9,000 is impossible.

This country is taking a step backwards. When my parents were young only people with rich parents went to uni and then the government made it possible for anyone and everyone to go to uni. Now it has gone back again. I feel greedy for moaning as I have already had an incredible opportunity to go to Uni and now I want to go back! It is because I really want to do something worth while and to make a difference and now I will not be able to have that opportunity.

Life blows right now.

God, that really does suck. I generally believe that everything works out, bit what a ridiculous obstacle. You shouldn't be priced out of wanting to better yourself and learn something so worthwhile. Its a pity too, because I live five minutes from the Royal Vetinary College in Hertfordshire! Big hugs. :-( xx

This is what happens when bureaucracy stifles, punishes and kills ambition.

I know the feeling.

My mother told me to go to hell when I told her that I'd loan my way into graduate school and rent and food.

My best advice-because I too have had this news and felt like everything is fucked- is do the science course. Right now your plans might be so out of reach and just depressing to think about but your willingness to learn and want to better yourself is not.
If the course fees for the career you want continue to be too high after you finish doing the science course then you can challenge this. But right now, I feel like you need something. This is the same situation I have been in and my boyfriend- he ended up volenteering at a place he wanted to work at for a while and gaining a lot of what he was missing.

I hope this makes sense and honestly I feel your pain and frustration right now x Hope you're okay x

I know how you feel sweetie frown The fact that if I even get back into uni this September I'll be paying course fees of £9000 a year is making me feel sick! And that I can't even guarantee a job at the end of it all... There's 30 people applying for every one place on my course. I hope everything works out. My plan is to finish my degree then move overseas! If you live overseas for a few years your student loan gets wiped smile

This is why I'm so glad I'm Welsh. I cannot imagine having to pay £9000 a year for university. Urgh. I feel for you. kiss

I ran into the same problem. I've been using my degree but its in a field that there will never be any serious money. When I looked at going for a masters in a different, I was looking at having to pay full tuition for 3 years worth of study. We live in a society where the haves can always get more, but the have nots are screwed.

I know a few people at work who are encountering the same problem and have just got stuck there and gone from being part time students to full time entrants in the management programme despite not actually wanting to be in retail. Half the people I work with are incredibly intelligent but can't go anywhere for the same reasons you've stated so I'm currently working alongside a genticist amongst others. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be.
