Lightning update (for I have to leave to work soon!)
♥ Did a photo-project documenting my whole Sunday. Click the photo to see all the photos. This was first thing when I woke up--note how amazingly pokey my hair is! It's kind of awkward. The handsome cat is my baby Pepin.

♥ I am wearing my 'Reading is for awesome people' t-shirt today and it makes me want to talk about what I'm reading.
The Devil's Horsemen: the Mongol Invasion of Europe
This books is kind of dry but I'm really enjoying it. I've always had a wierd fascination with the Mongols and Genghis Khan in particular. I don't know why; they were astonishingly brutal. It's been rad to read about how organised and relatively modern their army was! No wonder they were so successful at fucking Europe, because in the Middle Ages Europe was so ridiculously backwater compared to pretty much everywhere else. Their military techniques were hopelessly outdated and most of their armies were untrained serfs forced to fight, whereas the Mongol army (at least the part that was Mongol, not made up of conquered tribes) was more like the Roman army--very organised, well trained, with strategies the other armies couldn't match. Granted, one of their strategies was massacring villages to make a point, but as far as military history goes--they knew their shit.
Plus, I kind of love horse-worshipping cultures. I was one of those horse girls when I was growing up. I grew up on a farm and we had horses--I was even lucky enough to get my own pony, for Easter no less! Reading about horse sacrificing (like the Celts) and seeing a horse skeleton (in my DK encyclopedia) always gave me the eeriest feelings. Anyway, reading how horses were everything to the Mongols, and how they gave their battle horses utmost respect and wouldn't ever eat them, but they would sip blood if they needed to, was kind of rad. It's really interesting for me to think about an entire culture completely based around a single animal that they revere and live with and eat and use for money and companionship and represent in art (like the Scythians did). It seems like the only thing we are obsessed with in our culture is money, and it's beautiful and romantic to me to think about loving an animal instead.
♥ Kind of fittingly, today's Canadian Music Corner feature is Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans. I love country music so freaking much, and I kind of love Alberta. Here are two songs of his; I like the second better but they're both about cavalry, like the Mongols! Yay. 'Horse Soldier' even mentions the Mongols.
♥ Irinka and I went to Joshua Tree last weekend. Photos to come soon!
♥ I have some clothes for sale in the SG Sales group. Here's the thread to check it out! Three never-worn items! Sounds good, right?
♥ Uproot and I are making a spur of the moment trip to Arizona to visit grandparents + other relatives this weekend. We're going from Friday-Monday and we'll be in Prescott and Flagstaff. I am super excited! We will go through Sedona, too, and it looks super beautiful. It's supposed to storm so maybe we will even see thunder + lightning! I miss living on the prairies because I love huge rolling thunderstorms that rush into town and build up quickly out of a clear sky and thunder that shakes the windows and wakes you up in the middle of the night.
♥ time to catch the bus! Yikes.

news, news, news!
♥ New tattoo!! This was done on monday by _mike_

'Sweet Charlotte' is the name of the bell from my summer camp. It's now ten years since I first attended and the changes in my life because of the camp are immesurable. This design and placement popped into my head a few months ago, on one of those tossing and turning nights when I absolutely couldn't sleep. I took the rough idea to Mike and he whipped up this beaut!
♥ road trip! Irinka and I are heading up to Joshua Tree this Saturday! We are going to be meeting up with Lorelei and tonight we're going shopping to get stuff we will need. I am really excited. I have never been to Joshua Tree and it will be fun to spend time with my gal Irinka.
♥ My dad and brother were in town last weekend. They were only around for a few days but it was a nice visit. I hadn't seen them since March 2007 and they finally got to meet my husband (I have been married for 16 months or something like that). My dad got me a really beautiful silver bracelet with Sanskrit on it from the swap meet on Saturday. I think I might wear it today even though my outfit is an SG tank and capri pants. I just love it so much.
On Saturday, me, uproot, my dad and my brother all got sunburns. Mine is peeling quite attractively right now. Nothing beats a peely nose as far as sex appeal goes! Also, I think I'll post some of the visit photos in my next blog.
♥ Canadian Music Corner!!! Today is Old Man Luedecke. He reminds me of William Elliot Whitmore, except less tattooed and more Canadian.
Bear with this video, it's a clip from the East Coast Music Awards so it has a bit of a promo thing before the music actually starts.
As a little treat (because I love William Elliot Whitmore) here's one of his clips. Dudes playing banjos really get to me, I guess. I'm a sucker for alt-country. I seriously just want to live my life out on a farm, wearing cowboy boots and checking fences. Here's just a little teaser. This clip gives me the shivers. All his music is this soulful.
♥ I just finished reading 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson and it had the most beautiful phrase in it, that summed up the entire book: 'all life is one'. Reading the book made me feel so passionate about how beautiful and amazing and diverse and tenuous life is on our planet. Even though I live in the city, I grew up on a farm. I feel a really strong connection the the world around me, but it's easy to let that get dulled by the endless city. I've recently started birdwatching and last weekend I got a book to help me identify all the little creatures left behind in tidepools! Mostly I like smooshy things like anenomes and sea-bugs like crabs, but it will be cool to learn about chitons and barnacles and the like. It even has cross-section diagrams of what the inside of these critters are like! I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the little soft bodies inside barnacle shells.
So, yeah, it is pretty amazing to live on this planet. Now we just need to stop fucking it up so there's something left to enjoy . I hate people. I watched this Nova programme last night about women in Ethiopia who have had difficult labour that gave them vaginal fistulas so their urine just leaks constantly and they are shunned from their villages. It's a pretty simple surgery to fix it but not many women have access to it. One woman (who was 20!!) was telling about how her husband and a group of other men abducted her from a group of her friends when she was 15, kept her somewhere for two weeks, all of them 'used' her (in her words), then her 'husband' took her to his house where she'd live permanently, and soon she had a baby. The labour took five days and the baby died and she was left with her insides all wrecked! Stuff like this makes me despair.
But things are beautiful, too: a highschool friend just spent 4 months in Kenya, helping a community in need. He and a few others raised several thousand dollars to bring water closer to the town, to fix things that were broken and to build desks and chairs for a school. They fixed the school's toilet facilities and kitchen and are leaving with long-term plans in place, to help teach the people there how to upkeep things and funding and more volunteers in place to make these things come true. People like him are what makes this world worth living in. I am so inspired by him!! I want to do things like that in my life.

(I wrote this last night to post this morning)

Me, almightymabel, Eponine (top), Buzz (bottom). Note Buzz's swanky hankie (har!!) and my cowboy-hattedness. The walk had a western theme, but besides that I have the hugest fashion hardon for western wear. It's the first time I donned a cowboy hat, and I think it won't be the last--you can take the girl out of the country, but I guess you can't take the country out of the girl. Aaaaaanywayyyyy...
Thanks for all your help in my fundraising for the SD Humane Society. I exceeded my goal by $20, for a total of $520!! Thanks so much to quietlythere, rosita, valcapone, jonnytrrrash, cherry, malloreigh, rpg, leebus, jezel, perdita, linds, opticnerve, cheyenne, rosaline, people whose usernames I'm not sure of: C.R. from Larkhall, M.O. from Quebec, and other friends + family.
Here are more photos of the walk! Oh, also: today was the first day I ever saw beached-by-the-tide critters--some jellyfish! OMG.
Buzz with the storm troopers (shout out to _mike_)!

Sweet little Epi in the Sherriff's Wagon.

A.Mabel and I had a leisurely walk. We registered, got our prizes, ignored the inital rush on the walk (1/4 mile and like 2000+people and dogs! No need to rush) and ate pancakes. We got a tonne of
fundraising prizes, which was kind of nice.
Here are some photos from later on. I was reading and Pepin was cuddling, as he is wont to do.

Then Henry joined the party.

This evening, I went to Target and wanted to check out the cat section in case they have party hats, because Henry and Pepin's birthday is coming up! Buzz is coming and today I invited almightymabel. I think I might make it a dress-up party. I already have a hilarious giraffe hat and today I found a sailor suit. Pepin kind of hates to wear anything and has a a fit when I try to dress him so I figured the sailor suit would be perfect for Henry, who is super docile. I put it on him 3+ hours ago and he's still calmly chilling out, looking like the handsome guy he so clearly is.

And here is a photo of Pepin sleeping. I like to tease him so sometimes I open his mouth while he's sleeping and he leaves it that way, but sometimes he just naturally does this.

He is such a cuddler.

Lately I have been on a get-fit crusade! I stopped drinking pop(August) and drinking (February). I am not barring myself from having any of this stuff entirely, like I do with meat--I still taste things my friends order, if I feel like it. Next on the chopping block is high-fructose corn syurp! Watch out, everything sugary and bad for me!
Included in this is a crazy jogging phase! I used to run competitively (and do pretty well) from 12-15 and so did my old husbot, but now we are slobs who sit on the couch all the time. We are 23, so it is kind of wasting the good shape our bodies are naturally in. Westarted two weeks ago. Today I did a solo run and it was my longest yet--2 miles/3.35 km!! I feel sooo good. I even got (gulp) wrist weights, and I'm going to try to keep to a 3x/week yoga routine. I am shooting a new set soon but unfortunately it will be too soon to see the effects of my Super Hot New Body Workout Routine Which Will Make Me More Shapely and Less of a Big Loser. Oh yes.
I found this photo of uproot's magnificent beard when I was going through my camera today. He back-combed it before I took the photo, so keep in mind it's not usually this wooly.

OH YEAH! I did some modeling recently. Here's my favourite photo from the shoot.

Today we have the Joel Plaskett Emergency. I have had this song and another one of his (Face of the Earth) stuck in my head for days.

big news, everyone!
***update!!** i'm now at $345! thank you so much to everyone who has donated.
on april 20, almightymabel asked me to join her in walking our dogs in the san diego humane society walk for animals. i set my goal at $500. in just one week, i have raised $210! i need your help to reach my goal. i'm donating $50 myself, but that still leaves $230 i need to raise by may 3!!! that is just six days away and the pressure is on! all my pets are 'secondhand'--humane societies/rescues are so important!
even a donation of just $5 would mean so much to me. i am really making giving to charity my mission for the year, and i can't do this $500 on my own. i have 98 people on my friends list--if you each donated $2.35, i would make my goal! CHECK OUT MY DONATION PAGE!♥
just to show you who i'm walking with, here are mabel's babies (she is walking eponine, on the right)

and here is my pound-puppy, buzz. he is a giant sweetheart♥

please help me out!! i am really set on making this $500, and i am 42% there!

important update! i'm fundraising!
almightymabel and i are doing the san diego humane society fundraising walk on may 3! my donation goal is $500--i'm only at $110 ($50 from myself!) go here to read more about why i want to do it/to donate!
♥i hung out with almightymabel last night and we had SO. MUCH. FUN.
we discovered the best photo booth at WOW PICTURE STUDIO on convoy. i think we will probably be going back someday.

♥ old man uproot is in LA tonight, visiting a highschool friend of his. i think i am going to take this opportunity to go to a movie by myself. i kind of love doing that. my only beef is that when i used to do it in calgary, the theatres i liked were just a 10 minute walk from my house, instead of a 40ish minute transit adventure, on two different bus routes! i might attempt to go shopping right before the movie--i'm in dire need of a purse that looks nice when i'm a bit dressed up.
♥ i have been on a mega shopping spree lately! i have been watching a lot of 'what not to wear' and it made me realise that i don't want to look so teenaged anymore. i have been upgrading my wardrobe so it's more flattering to the way i'm shaped, instead of clinging to t-shirts that fit 3 years and 2 cup sizes ago. another necessity has been to make my wardrobe more summer appropriate. san diego is warm for so long that a bevy of t-shirts doesn't exactly cut it. right now i'm waiting on two bras from victoria's secret. i hope they come today--i am really looking forward to seeing how hilariously ginormous my boobs look with the add-a-cup bra i bought.
♥ i retired my nipple piercings last sunday. i had them for almost four years!! i don't like they way my breasts look without them, but the left one was migrating out like woah and i just noticed it on saturday night. i don't like the way just one piercing looks so that's why i took them both out. i might get them repierced, but--i dunno.
♥ even though i have two cats and a dog in a tiny apartment, i have had such a craving for kittens. that sounds like i want to eat them, but believe me: i do not. i just want a roly-poly bunch of squirming baby cats to fall asleep in silly places, including my pockets. pepin is still pretty much a kitten but he's too large for pockets. my big handsome man henry is sitting up on my lap as i type this and it's super comforting. he's leaning on my chest and purring so i can feel his purr through my body.
♥ i think i should start a canadian music corner to educate all you heathen americans about what good indie music sounds like. not to sound like an elitist asshole or anything, but--geez.
i have been listening to jenn grant pretty often the past couple weeks. she is dreamy!
♥ i am going to get a new tattoo soon. what is it of? i don't know.
♥ i am set to get almost $400 back on my taxes from two combined years (i was an ass and didn't file last year) plus almost $400 in gst cheques. the bad news is that i probably owe money from not filing last year, or something. oops.
♥ i think i have to go walk my dog/eat some pizza/clean my house. maybe i won't go to a movie and i'll just stay home and play maplestory. that's a suitable replacement, right? i am determined to reply to a bunch of comments today, as well! yay.

i have been pink for almost 3 years (since may 2005) so i figured a little retrospective was in order.

me and totoro chilling out at dennys. i really don't have many photos of myself. no one takes photos of me but me. i have a photoshoot on sunday though! it will be my first in ages.
i recently passed my two year veg anniversary! it feels like much longer, though. yay, rin!
i'll return to comments soon. i swear!
canadian music corner:
jim bryson 'clear the crowds' .
do you know what i have been doing? listening to a shit tonne of canadian music. if you don't already, you should be listening to radio 3! i started posting like 8000 youtube videos, but you guys should just check out my playlist--go to that link up there, click 'user playlists' then when it says 'browse by name' type in mine: arinn. i have been updating it a lot, so you should listen!
my idea to buy one canadian indie cd a month was not met with much enthusiasm. last month was the paper cranes. this month i'm debating between basia bulat oh my darling, joel plaskett emergency ashtray rock, anything by jim bryson or corb lund (and the hurtin' albertans!! love it.)
as far as my donate to one thing a month campaign goes, i donated to the uk alzheimers society. i am also going to be sending a bit of cash to my friend suneil, who is currently volunteering in kenya because he is pretty much awesome. here is his blog. you should check it out because it's pretty interesting!
my mom is visiting in ten days. yay!! we are getting dragonfly tattoos on our feet.
so cal anomaly: last night it hailed. twice!!
i have been playing videogames so much lately. i go between animal crossing and harvest moon: another wonderful life on gamecube, and animal crossing: wild world, cooking mama and the legend of zelda: phantom hourglass on my shitty refurbished ds. the bottom screen doesn't work as well as i'd like. oh well--someday i'll have a beautiful pink ds lite!!
i am loving my job. have i told you guys that? it's so fulfilling and super fun. i saw a baby on tv last night and it made me excited to go back to work on monday.
i want to update with photos, but my computer still sucks (i'm not going to be able to get it fixed for another couple weeks) so you'll have to wait.

today you can see me on myspace.com/peta2 as part of the 'i'd rather go naked than wear fur' campaign.

you might recognise the photo: lavonne took it almost 2 years ago. it was really nice of her to allow me to submit it for the campaign: thank you♥
