♥ The other day I had a strange dream. In it, my friend was singing this song to me:

So I am on a new William Elliott Whitmore kick. I had all his stuff on my old computer, but since it's dead for good, my music collection is stuck on my external. Anyway I downloaded some more albums and I am listening again.

I am so into the banjo! I don't know why, but I have gotten a pretty strong appreciation for it lately, between Mr. W.E. Whitmore and Old Man Luedecke.

♥ This past weekend, secretagenman and his friend Cooper came down from LA to hang out with me and Katieesq. We were all supposed to go surfing but I got that tattoo last weekend so I just sat on the beach and read my book.

We were at the Del Mar dog beach so it was pretty awesome. A dog peed on Cooper's foot and another one gave secretagenman a tonne of kisses. I love people and dog-watching so I was totally content to sit on the shore while everyone else was in the water.

Later we made supper and I made my first ever pierogi! My mom was so proud of me. My heritage is mainly Ukrainian so I was raised on pierogi and cabbage rolls. I am actually going to make more tonight. Now that I know how to make them I am not ever going to pay for them here in the U.S. They are so expensive; $4.50 for 12 instead of the price at home, which is like $3 for a bag of 30. Now I just need to get the motivation to try making cabbage rolls and I will be set.

Here, Katie and I look extremely attractive.

Katie and I in the kitchen (I really like this photo. We look happy)

Supper, which was super amazingly delicious.

Here is secretagenman opening some wine.

♥ Can you believe Ukraine's government fell? It's kind of interesting that it happened now as I am reading this awesome book about the history of Ukraine. I've only read a small part of the book, but it seems that for much of its history, Ukraine has not been self-governing; it's been held by Russia and Poland. So I am not super surprised that their government isn't stable.

♥ Elections Canada called me and apparently I didn't send sufficient proof of residence for my Vancouver house (I didn't have any official bills or anything to photocopy my address from and mail in) so I have to fax over a copy of my driver's license, which means I'll be voting in the Calgary Central electoral district, just like in the last election. I am happy to vote but it feels so useless in Calgary because it's a Tory stronghold.

♥ My birthday is in two weeks from tomorrow! I am pretty excited, as all my inlaws (who I love) will be in town. I always get excited for my birthday, though, so this year is not really any different. The last year has zoomed by.

♥ Oh, and great news: my grandpa of the coffee cup tattoo finally decided to get the lifesaving surgery he needs. He has declined treatment for almost a year so I'm happy he's changed his mindsmile

♥ Okay, so a parting question: What are you allergic to? I'm allergic to bee stings (though not very seriously, as I've only been stung twice, both times on my feet) and dates (the fruit, not the outing, har har)

♥ Today Uproot and I spent some time with our pal _mike_. I can't find my DSLR cord so camera phone photos will have to suffice.

uproot's sparkplug

My coffee cup! It is for my grandpa, who has a nice grandpa-ey smell from the coffee and cigarettes he is constantly consuming. He is never without one or the other. Also, he calls everybody FRED and is a hilarious booming voiced gramps. He taught me how to gamble when I was thirteen. He is awesome and I love him, so I got this.

♥ I got a really great surprise tonight! I am going to be able to take three classes at my online university! After I get back to Canada I will apply for student loans/save/apply for grants and scholarships to fund the rest of it. I am so effing excited!!

♥ I am eating some leftover Mexican rice. It tastes SO GOOD. I loooove this stuff.

Eleeeeection!

Last night I printed/filled out my request to vote by mail. Oct 14 is going to be a nervy day for me! I hope the Conservatives are ousted out but I fear the best to hope for is a Liberal minority. But hey, all I really care about is disabling Bush Lite. I am mailing my request form today, hooray!

So, my Canadian pals, I am going to be sincerely disappointed if you guys don't vote too. I mean, I think everyone should vote (you Americans too) but understandably, Canadian stuff is a bit closer to my heart. If I was an American citizen I'd be getting fired up about American politics (and, I do a bit anyway) but ultimately it does me no good because I can't participate in the process. I don't like debating that much anyway.

SO: get ready! 35 days until the election that really matterswink

Because I love the middle ages, here is an elephant with a castle on its back. It's marginalia from the Chronica Majora.

I love learning about the middle ages because there's a distinct lack of factual basis for pretty much everything that went on.

according to medieval bestiaries, elephants represent Adam and Eve, for just like Adam and Eve before the fall, they feel no sexual desire. When elephants want to mate, they go to the east, near Eden, and eat the mandrake plant in order to inspire lust, just as Adam and Eve were inspired to hanky and panky by the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

♥ Scratch that whole going back to school thing. I was trying to get a loan from the bank of Dad last week and he said yes then but yesterday revealed that the interest rate was guilt for (literally) the rest of his life. So, I decided to just make it work on my own. When I'm in BC I'll get student loans and whatever. I have to revise everything again and I just have to be okay with it. Oh well.

Irinka gave me her old cell phone when she upgraded and now I have a fancy pants picture phone!

♥ I ate frozen yogurt on Saturday night with Katieesq.

It looks great, right?

♥ One month until I am 24!

♥ I am a university drop-out no more! I am re-starting my Bachelor's, only this time I am majoring in History and not Sociology. I'm doing it through an online university based in Alberta (Athabasca University) and I am really excited. I am going to start out trying two classes at a time--I have 6 months to finish each class. I'd like to take on more but I'm unused to working so hard and so I should start it off slow. The first two classes I am taking are History 201 (history of the world pre-Reformation) and Geology 201 (Historical geology; prehistoric eras, creation of the world's topography, etc). Maybe it is boring to tell you guys that but I am really excited so I don't care.

♥ It's now five years since I first tried out university. Five years ago I was in such an exciting place. I had just moved to Edmonton and it felt so grown up and wonderful to walk to school in the crisp fall mornings. I lived in a really nice neighbourhood just six blocks south of the university; coincidentally, my friend Jenanne now lives next door to my old house! For my first semester I lived with my friend Erin (didn't work out so well) and my second semester was with Rosita and it was so wonderful. We were in the same English class and we would sometimes stay home from school to eat pancakes, play Donkey Kong 3 and look on SG all day.

♥ Surfing got postponed! I was feeling really gross yesterday for most of the day so I just laid on the couch a lot.

But, later in the day I felt better for a bit and so I ran out and got a new DS! I have been saving up money in a piggy bank for a while and I decided to use it. I got a pink DS lite! I wanted a coral pink one and got a metallic pink one by accident. Oh well. I don't usually make a fuss about stuff so I'm not sending it back or anything.

Yes, there is a difference. Coral pink vs metallic pink

Uproot bought Okami for PS2 yesterday. I am so in love with it. Here, watch a trailer. Hold onto your socks.

♥ For Better or For Worse ended today! I have been reading that comic for a long time and the storyline has been sucking lately (I still can't get over the whole Elizabeth/Anthony thing) FBOFW still is one of my favourite comics so I'm sad to see it go.

♥ I love summer but I'm longing for a crisp autumn. I love cool-weather clothing the best. I miss wearing my cowboy shirts.

♥ Some mournful, Canadian alt-country in lieu of wearing cowboy clothes! Great Lake Swimmers, to be precise. I saw them first at the Calgary Folk Festival in 2006 on a panel or whatever they are called. I was immediately hooked and perhaps you will be too.

You can hear more if you like

♥ I really need to concentrate on the positive things right now.

Last week when I was swimming the backstroke, I could see hummingbirds floating around above me. It seems like I can't quite get over the magic of this place. Even now I can hear them clicking and chirping to each other in the tree outside my window.

And then, on Saturday I swam at night. I could see tiny pinpricks of stars, which was so affirming to me. I was swimming without my glasses on and so it was kind of heartwarming that I could at least see a couple stars without any aid. The clouds were puffy and pinkish and I saw an airplane cross the sky too. It was just good to be in the water and moving my body.

♥ Life is too short for me let myself be surrounded by drama and by people who don't really care. There is beauty in everything all around me and it is time to concentrate on that. To concentrate on making myself a better person than I was before and to be good to those around me.

♥ Sometimes it feels like I'll never be able to go home again, but at least I can still dream about it.

AUGUST 23, 2008 @ 03:08 PM | 30 COMMENTS

♥ Last night I went to see Frank Black playing at the Del Mar track! It was so fantastic! The show wasn't super long, probably because the crowd was a mixed bag of racetrack randoms and people who actually wanted to see Frank Black, but I had a great time anyway.

♥ I have been trying to update all week and just haven't had time. BOO.

♥ My mom visited us last weekend and it was a wonderful visit. Seeing her absolute joy at experiencing new things really warmed my heart. She'd never been in the Pacific before. We went up to Encinitas and splashed around and later played scrabble.

♥ Next weekend Katieesq and I are going surfing with secretagenman! It should be pretty exciting. He is going to teach us to surf. In preparation I have been swimming laps in my teensy pool. It is only about 12 strokes from one end to the other but I did sixteen there-and-back laps yesterday. I swam until some guy came and sat in the shade and took his shirt off. I didn't want an old creepster creeping on me so I came inside.

♥ I pre-ordered the new Harvest Moon game. I get to pick it up on Tuesday, hooray!

♥ My mom's pooch Ruby had 11 puppies a couple weeks ago!! Ruby is half husky, so the pups are mutt-skys. ELEVEN! My mom was thinking four pups, as it was Ruby's first litter, so she kind of got a surprise. My stepdad is pretty nice, but he made the slip-up of letting pre-spay Ruby out to run when she was in heat. I asked my mom if she would raise one of the puppersons for us and we will bring her to live with us after we move to BC. We chose the girl runt who is white with brown. Apparently my 12 year old cousin Teddi also has her eye on this pooch, but my mom didn't tell me that until after we decided she is the one we want. Teddi has made her a blanket, a hat, and one boot (?). I am not going to lose a battle of wills with a twelve year old who already has six dogs, though. Also, if anyone in the Edmonton area wants a puppy in a couple months, let me know. I have no idea how my mom will find homes for all these pooches! She lives on an acreage, so she's not about to take them to the pound, but she is not interested in keeping all of them forever.

There are 8 boys and 3 girls. The one we picked is the white and brown one who is sideways to the camera.

♥Teddi is kind of hilarious, she recently wrote me a letter talking about all her horses and their breeds and which she likes and which she doesn't, then concluded it with a sweet, pre-teen p.s.: 'Do you have any brand name stuff?' That was such a hard question. I eventually answered by saying I'm not as into brand names as I used to be and that I don't know what brands are even popular now, but I do have a Yakpak purse and a pair of Gap jeans.

♥ More pet stuff: I am taking Mr Henry Purrington-Buttersworth to get neutered/vaccinated on Tuesday. I am a ginormous worrier and so I am terrified he will die. I know I am neurotic but I don't know how to calm down about stuff like that. Anyway, I love him a tonne and I hope he comes out of it okay. I also hope that the eternal baby of the house, Mr Pepin, gives him more space than usual so poor ol' Henry can heal up.

♥ I am joining a gym today! Uproot and I are tired of being doughy and out of shape. I am kind of excited because I want to make the most of my youth and my body.

♥ hopefully a better update in a few days!

♥ I am getting stuff done on my to-do list! I cleaned up the house a bunch, and now I am backing up my laptop so I can try reinstalling OSX in hopes of correcting the problems I've been having! I wrote/finished writing a few letters. I walked the dog. I ate breakfast/showered before noon! I answered emails. I am on a roll! I have today off because _mike_ and _amy_ are going up north to a wedding. I have tomorrow off because I always have fridays off. I am feeling so, so good about getting all this shit done! My mom is visiting next week from Thursday-Sunday so it's imperative that I take care of this stuff, like cleaning the house. My mom would tease us unmercifully if she saw our place like this.

♥ Yesterday Irinka and I went shopping! I got this wonderful black pencil-y skirt with a little flouncy ruffle on the bottom and some super-sex-dreamy heels.

♥ Last week Katieesq and I caught a play her friend was in: Romeo and Juliet, at the Old Globe Theatre. Her friend was playing Paris, and he did really well. The play was pretty barfy though. Romeo was so gross and the men's costumes were horrific! They were all wearing tights with little codpieces. Historical accuracy be damned. I am glad that John (K's friend) had a little skirty ruffle modestly covering him, which is good because I don't think I could have looked him in the face afterward! Kate, don't tell him that. Let's keep it between you, me and everyone on SG reading this.

We got all dressed up to go out and we had a great time! We are going to see John in Merry Wives of Windsor this week. Reportedly it's set in the wild West so hopefully no skin-tight leggings are going to be making an appearance.

♥ I have been knitting a baby blanket for my friends Wendy and Brian for what seems like months. I guess it is months but Jesus Christ on a crutch. I didn't expect it to take so long! I brought it to the theatre while watching the last two movies I saw: The Dark Knight with Kate last Friday and an (amazing) French thriller on Sunday, with Uproot: Tell No One/Ne le dis a personne. It was so fucking good.

♥ Netflix is the best thing to happen to the internet besides SG and Facebook. We just watched Chinatown this week. All I have to say is HOLY FUCK. I love movies like that. Another good one I watched lately was The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. People always used to tell me that I haven't seen enough movies--like, I'd meet someone and they'd quiz me on what I'd seen and conclude my movie education was incomplete (like _mike_!) but with Netflix I am catching up. And holy hell, are there a lot of good movies out there that I looked over. I love watching movies. I prefer to go to the cinema but at home is okay too.

♥ Another thing that people constantly tell me, and have for years: I look like someone they know/knew/met once. It's so strange! Part of my ego wants me to look unique but it's kind of a nice icebreaker.

♥ My cousin Alex sent me this City and Colour album and I wasn't really expecting to like it but I really, really enjoy it. Because I am an asshole sometimes, I assumed when the album came out a while ago that it would suck, just because it's from Alexisonfire's lead singer. I wouldn't say it's the most distinctive or inventive of Canadian folk/alternative I've listened to lately, but it has a pretty solidly good sound and some really nice songs.

♥ Canadian music? What?
Tokyo Police Club!

This song makes me want to go dance around. I

♥ Because I've been relentlessly pursuing the California Tan (make the most of the sun before I move back to cloudster Vancouver) I'm out to slather some smell sun-lotion on and lay out in the sun and read for a bit. I will probably fall asleep and I may even go for a swim. It is hot here today! It's 27C and I am going to enjoy it outside of my hot little apartment box.

Holy hell, it has literally taken me like an hour to get this entry going. First I had to upload my Comic Con photos and that turned into a catastrophe and I've finally done it. The moral of the story is that I should really get my laptop fixed because all the pain I mentioned would have not happened. I NEED to. It's just hard because I know it will cost like $200. I just need to bite the bullet and do it! I can't believe it's already almost noon. I am supposed to be hanging out with Irinka soon AND I'M NOT EVEN SHOWERED. ARGH. I hate over-sleeping!

♥ Comic Con was SO overwhelming! I can't believe how many people were there. I grew up in a town of 12,000 people. Large groups of slow-moving people give me anxiety so I didn't walk around very much. Irinka, Dino and I were at the Shocker Toys booth and I had a blast. I met so many super-sweet members and I had a really great time! It was so cool to meet so many people who were stoked on the site.

Small fangirl moments included: Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak (Kelly and Ryan from The Office) on the escalator between me, Irinka & Dino, seeing Seth Green (he came to our booth! He's so tiny!) aaaaand.....

Seeing Lasagna Cat!

I love the site, but it also kind of freaks me out a lot, hence the face I am making. Jon's toupee is frightening in real life.

Sadly, that is pretty much the only photo I have from Comic Con. Almost everything else came out blurry, including the photos I took of Dice, Dino and Irinka on our taco run. Sorry, ladies!frown

oh! Also, I met up with secretagenman and I think this is a really cute photo of us.

[edit] February just gave me this photo. Thanks so much!<3<3

from Dice's journal:

Me, Irinka, Dino, Dice, Troa and Odette

♥ Another highlight of Comic-Con: meeting Optic_Nerve! I had such a great timesmile

♥ What else? My brain is SO scattered, as I am mega-behind and Irinka is coming over soon so we can play Animal Crossing and go suntan and maybe swim at my pool. I

♥ I am on a pretty strict diet, but I ate cookies for breakfast. It kind of ruins the point of everything but it was so good. My diet is not so much a lose-weight diet, but a be-healthy diet. I am a strict vegetarian--no animal products at all. I cut out soda last August, though I'll sometimes have a couple sips. I stopped drinking in January, but I will taste sips of what Uproot orders sometimes. I am trying to cut out high fructose corn syrup but it is really hard. It's in everything! I'm trying to move away from most dairy and white flours. I have taken to having baby carrots on me almost always, because they are a super-good snack.

♥ Rin-formation: I have a ridiculously hard time with the concepts of 'right' and 'left'. Therefore, I am terrible at giving directions when driving! I don't think I have a learning disability. I know the cardinal directions, I just have trouble with relative directions. I always put my hands in the L and backwards L positions to check if something is right or left and sometimes I still get it wrong, which makes me feel really dumb. I don't know why but I just have a really hard time, unless I concentrate super hard on it. I am pretty smart otherwise so I don't know where this comes from. I imagine it makes me look pretty stupid but I can't/don't know how to help it. I am 23, you'd think I had it down by now.

♥ I am reading this super-interesting book about Gypsies that I bought at Chloe and Trixie's garage sale. What a steal for $1! I know it will be a book I re-read a bunch.

♥ I still haven't fixed my huge backlog of unanswered messages that I mentioned in the last journal entry. (I can't believe I only updated once in July! Shame on me.) I still have 63 on SG and now I'm up to almost 200 unfiled on gmail. SIGH. I so need to get my computer fixed! I want a new DS (I got a secondhand DS. It screen is so fucked up and I want a pink DS Lite) and more tattoos but I think my computer is a vast priority.

♥ I have to go shower so when Irinka comes over she still likes me. I swear I am going to catch up on replying to comments. I just can't believe how busy I have been the past two weeks. I hope you guys still like me. Sometimes I am just hopeless. Okay, off to the shower!!

edit!
I almost forgot to add that SanityLost did a super-cute fan art of mesmile
