♥First, more photos of the fashion show I was in a couple weekends ago:
♥ Then, more photos from Club Suicide with Cheyenne and Irinka:
♥Halloween with Katieesq! Uproot was there but I didn't get a photo of him. Terrible planning on my part! We went to _mike_'s and it was SO MUCH FUN.

Katie's planning really made our costumes come together. She printed out Dunder Mifflin name badges for us and even had Shrutebucks! What a hit. I love dressing up like a boy for Halloween. Fuck slut-o-ween! Future costume plans: Klaus Nomi, Hedwig and Franknfurter (the last two count because I want to look like a drag queen in them).
♥ Other weekend goings-on: visiting Old Town with my girls Irinka and Cheyenne. Had Moroccan food for the first time ever and it was sooo good. The restaurant was playing Roman Holiday on a big screen right by our table so unfortunately Uproot had to listen to me go on about it (it's pretty much my favourite movie) but he is a stand up guy so he just let me talk. Then yesterday we went to a Dios de los Muertos thing in Sherman Heights and watched some insane Aztec dancing and lost a raffle for this rad box thing. But there were tonnes of altars and we bought a sugar skull and some pan de muertos or something like that. It was yummy and crumbly.
♥ Listen to this song. Another gem I half-forgot about from my HD! Apparently this song is sampled in some Wu-Tang Clan stuff, but I don't know what song. Coincidentally I downloaded their first two albums this weekend. So good!!
♥ I started my class this week! I got such a good surprise. My course package included the textbooks!! I was so stoked on that. When I live in Alberta it'll only cost me like $650 and that is a pretty sweet deal to have textbooks included! The course cost me a bit more this time around because I'm international right now but oh well. The course I'm taking is history of Canada pre-1867 and it's really good so far, I'm loving the stuff I've had to read. I'm going to try and smash out another assignment today. So far I'm on track to be pretty far ahead of the curriculum guidelines so I hope I can keep that up. It's kind of hard to get my brain back in school mode instead of lazy mode but I'm confident it will come along and I'll get used to writing essay questions and being super articulate and whatnot.
♥ Today is HALLOWEEN! I love halloween. Me, Irinka and Cheyenne are hitting up the Old Town Dia de los Muertos thing and possibly the Whaley house, if it's not too crowded. Last week at the fashion show I met a super rad girl who worked there and she told me some crazy stuff! And then later we will join up with my oldster and Katieesq and go make some trouble all together.
♥ Um, I think that's it. I leave you with this!
What do you want? How will you get it?
I like how little bats curled up look like fuzzy walnuts.

Some bats have really sweet dog faces.
And of course big ears are a real win in the cute awards.

Last night Mr Rin and I spent a significant amount of time looking up bat nurseries that you put on your property and bait so bats come and live in them. They are little hutches with mesh floors so I guess the guano doesn't stack up because cleaning a bat-hutch doesn't sound easy.
♥ My ibaby is back from the shop and I've re-loaded everything on it. It's SO NICE to have my music collection back at my hands. Now I just need a new ipod. I'm glad I didn't send mine to this web service--this is the one time my procrastination has paid off. I was going to send it to ikaput, which was a repair service but now I found out that the guy who ran it just made you pay for the repairs then sold your ipod on ebay. BARF. I think I am going to buy a refurbished smallish ipod from the apple site with my next paycheque. I am sooooo tired of hearing what people on the bus are talking about, as it is always inane.
♥ Here is one of the songs I've missed! I have listened to it a tonne of times this morning just to make up for not hearing it since my computer broke an embarrassingly long time ago.
One of the things I miss about working at the library is having access to all the Bollywood videos that would circulate. I watched a lot of random movies because of that job. I sincerely do love Bollywood stuff though. The musical numbers slay me. Ugh, I need to stop browsing them on youtube so I can finish this entry/get ready for work.
♥ This weekend I had adventures with Irinka, Cheyenne and drewyoon in LA. I also did a fashion show here in SD. I am waiting till I have more photos to post them though. I had such a fun time but I will write more about that when I post all the photos.
♥ New tattoo, once again a masterpiece done by _mike_. It's unfinished--later it will have colour and more little birds around it. But for now, this is it:

♥ Still listening to Girl Talk.
♥ Still day-dreaming about a shitbox old town car. I always love ugly cars. When I was in highschool I was obsessed with this yellow Acadian that I called the ugly car because it is kind of ugly. I can only imagine myself driving ugly little cars like this, and not some slick convertible or anything.

Here is a $1400 town car I want.

♥ It is time to go eat nutella on toast and watch Little Mosque on the Prairie. Canadian TV is the best.
♥ Stephane Dion stepping down today? But who will replace him, oh nooooo!
♥ Throw some cheese on that bitch! I am obsessed with this song right now. I so want a Lincoln Town Car or an old Cadillac that I can nasty up with some wire rims and gold detailing and a bunch of Virgin Marys stuck to the dash. Reference the 'Throw Some D's' video if you are not from my hometown. Yellowdays remember Steve in the Pimpmobile? I want it.
♥ Weakerthans & Corb Lund did well at the Western Canada Music Awards this weekend. Yay!
♥ Getting tattooed by _mike_ tomorrow, so I will update tomorrow night with photos. I want to journal more often!
I hate when Canadians tell me voting doesn't matter. I can understand that viewpoint coming from Americans because of the whole electoral college thing. It is so disgusting to me that people are so lazy when it comes to their own political system! Canada has had 3 elections in 4 years and because of this continuing minority government I bet we will have another election again in 2 years! What a waste of taxpayer money. Stephen Harper called the election knowing it would turn into another minority government: he went into it knowing it would be a waste of money and not change the makeup of the government. Only 37% of voting Canadians voted Conservative--and the other 63% have to deal with having a PM whose policies they don't agree with.
I just want to stay home today and sulk. I can't believe how awful people are. Democracy doesn't work when no one votes.
♥ Canadians, concerned about vote-splitting on the left? Check out this super-rad website for advice on how to vote strategically in your riding!
♥ I had a pretty rad birthday. I worked but that's no problem because I love my job, and my in-laws gave me a ride home from work (so I didn't have to take the bus!) which was really sweet of them. Then we met them all for supper at this amazing restaurant in North Park, the Linkery, and afterward it was cake and present time!
This is me on my birthday. I don't usually take self-portraits but I felt so nice!

Here is the sexy pile of books I got for my birthday! Actually Uproot and I got the John Adams book/DVDs are a shared present (squeeee!) so I counted that in my tally.

♥ I just signed up for my first online university class! I'm taking Canadian history pre-confederation and I am super excited. I will be getting the course materials in a couple weeks! Yay, history! I got into history with Pierre Berton as a little girl and I've never looked back.
♥ Photos!

We went to the Wild Animal Park, which was awesome. Here are a few highlights (a more involved entry to follow)
Dik dik! I love them. They are tiny and sweet and their noses are for thermoregulation and they wiggle so cutely all the time. I could keep one and it would be friends with my cats.

Here I am sexing up a giraffe.

baby okapi! I am dying of cuteness.
I have a bunch more photos to post, but I will do that later. We did so much fun stuff with the in-laws! I really enjoy spending time with them.
♥ Finally found my camera cord. Now you can see how good my newest tattoo actually looks.

♥ What else is amazing? HRM...oh yeah, I got my photos back from a shoot with this rad photog Rebecca Joelson! I know I could've done better modeling but she was a great photographer! I'm happy with how she made me look but I know I could have done better on my end. I am really unused to doing head shots and so I should have worked on my expressions better but at least two photos came out. And we got to use a makeup artist, so that was a nice change--I usually have to do my own!

♥ Time to go to work!
♥ How much have I changed in a year? I don't know, but I've gone through a lot. I've been trying really hard to be a better person all around. I'm healthier--I eat better and go to the gym a few times a week. I have re-enrolled in school (yay!). I have gone through some crazy family stuff--dealing with severe homesickness and my grandparents' illnesses. I have gotten five tattoos this year. I walk talking with my mom this morning and it seems too soon for me to be turning twenty-four. She feels it too. She was this age when I was born!
♥ Have you seen a crab ride a jellyfish? Sea creatures are SO COOL.
♥ The Santa Anas are back! I feel like I am melting. Hopefully it will cool down soon. It is so hot that Henry has been sleeping on his back all the time.
♥ I am going to start returning comments soon, I swear! I am busy with family stuff right now--the in-laws are in town!
♥ Irinka is giving me a haircut next week! I am excited. I've been cutting my bangs and they don't look so great. I used to cut them well! I've lost my touch.
♥ We got an xbox 360 on the weekend! Uproot found this rad game called Viva Piñata and I am loving it. It is hilarious and awesome. In it, you have a garden, and you have to try and attract these piñata and try to get them to live in your garden. Also, having a wireless controller is such a luxury!

♥ my twenty third year has zoomed by. Hopefully I can slow things down for big twenty four.
♥ I have just passed the third anniversary of my first set going up! So much has happened since then. There have been ups and downs of being on the site but the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. My life is so different now and it's all because of this site...
♥ I am eating yogurt with granola for breakfast. MMM.
♥ I am worried the conservatives will win the Canadian election. I hope my mail-in ballot comes soon. I neeeeed to vote. This will be the third federal election I've voted in! Being able to participate is a pretty big deal for me.
♥ I am trying to find the name of a book and it is really annoying. It is about Natives who live on the reserve south of where I grew up and how they found a loophole in treaties 8 and 11 that allowed them to live on some land near the Rockies (just a couple hours west) and how they returned to practicing a lot of things traditional to their culture, like hunting and self-governance. I really want to re-read it. I will probably find it within a few more days of hunting through my home library's online catalogue. Stuff like that is so brain-draining.
♥ the one hour premier of the Office is on tonight! I am practically wetting my pants with excitement. I love that show so much...Katieesq and I are going as Dwight and Jim for Halloween, even!
♥ I need to go get ready for work/take the dog out. I leave you with a bit of old-ass Rin: a self-portrait I did in 2005, about a month before my set went up

♥ My current obsessions:
- Antarctica! I can't wait to travel there. It is one of my top travel goals! I saw Encounters at the End of the World this year and it was stunning and bleak and wonderful. Besides, I have long read about the Antarctic explorers--Shackleton, Scott, Amundsen. There's a particular kind of romance involved in the expeditions of a hundred years ago. Anyway, I am going to go to the end of the world someday.
- Ukraine! My ethnic heritage is about half Ukranian and I am just getting into Ukraine. No wonder all the Ukrainian immigrants ended up on the prairies. Ukraine is mostly rolling fields itself...and what a battleground. Today I have been reading about the unbelievable repression that Ukrainians faced under Soviet rule. I can never wrap my head around the horrible things people can do to eachother. I am not often moved by things I read (but I'm getting more sympathetic as time goes on) and today I was just destroyed first-hand accounts of life during the starvation period of the early 1930s. One of my friends traveled to Ukraine last year and she said the people were really unfriendly, but I want to go anyway. It's been rated one of the hardest places in the world to be vegetarian but I don't care, I will eat rice and potatoes for two weeks or whatever. Also, I just watched Everything is Illuminated last week or two weeks ago so that helped re-start my fervor. The land is so beautiful. I guess it looks a lot like where I grew up, but whatever.
- Alberta<3<3 We watched Brokeback Mountain this weekend. It was filmed mostly, if not entirely, in southern Alberta while I lived there. Seeing the places that were so familiar to me made me really homesick. I can't wait to get home. It has been too long and I never imagined how hard it would be.
♥ Ack, I guess I have to go make supper, since I am hungry and it is that time of day. Wish I had some more to post.
