hola!

today is my first day off in over a week--i slept in till ten but i still feel so fucking wasted. i'm planning on taking an afternoon nap with my sweetheart kitten babies. in fact, it's 1pm but i crawled back into bed with them to write this.

i actually made a new profile photo!! hopefully it gets accepted...i don't have many photos of myself these days so it was slim pickin's.

zoom image

i don't know how often the staff robots change photos these days, but my fingers are crossed.

what else have i been up to? hmm, this week i made my roommate/#1 wife jessica a giant supper for her birthday. she asked for souvlaki, so i made it with greek salad, tzitziki and pita, with strawberry cheesecake for dessert. i had made none of that stuff before, except pita, so it was definitely a learning experience but i think it came out really well. the cheesecake had to set overnight so we had it for breakfast on wednesday morning, which was indulgent and delightful, but so rich the tiny piece i tried made me feel slightly ill. cheesecake is too heavy for me at the best of times so i was kind of insane to eat first thing in the morning but fuck it, i am 26 and i can get away with that shit.

omg, dudes, today i made the most gourmet grilled cheese sandwich of my life. it was on sourdough bread, with some herbed chevre, thinly sliced cheddar, a few sundried tomatoes and avocado slices. it was the sexiest grilled cheese i've ever eaten.

on the bad habits list (besides eating fucking cheesecake for breakfast) i've started smoking cloves again! i blame work and wifey. we don't really get breaks at work unless they're smoke breaks, and i loooove the act of smoking, and jess is always smoking at home...grr!! i only have 1-2 cloves a day, and i think this temporary bad habit is offset by my extremely healthy vegetarian diet and almost daily yoga practice. why does it feel so sexy to hold a cigarette, draw the smoke in, move your mouth around it and exhale? i don't think it's just hollywood sexifying it...there's something innately delightful about it.

and friends, don't bother lecturing me about it (like my coworker yesterday!! i totally wanted to punch her in the face) because it's a very occasional habit of mine. usually when i buy a pack, i can't even finish them before they get all stale. the only reason my last pack got finished was because wife jessica smoked half of it.

oh, and shit!! i almost forgot. here's what's been crawling up my ears lately: the new girl talk album. when i heard 'ice cream paint job' in the first track i was bowled over. i have such a musicboner for girl talk. i saw him twice this year (one show was tragically cut short however!! oh the sadness) and he's one of the best live shows i've ever seen. he lets the crowd pile on stage with him and so as he spins, there's a giant dance party going on beside & around him. very cool considering most musicians maintain a very firm distance from their crowd.

check this shit out. girl talk is the best because of his extremely diverse sampling and his proclivity to layer dirty ass rap on top of sappy synth. seriously. just listen. maybe have a dance party. this shit is irresistible.

in other news, i need a haircut so fn bad. it's so shaggy in the back i can almost fit it into a ponytail. i feel like a nerd when my cool haircut grows out into shagtown. ok, breathe, i can make it through to a stylist without hacking the shit out of my hair...i hope!

and now, my question to you guys: if you were cooking to impress someone, what would you make?

I have a four day weekend and all I've done so far is write two paragraphs for my semester paper, spill guacamole on my jeans and run 11 miles. No wonder I'm single. Sigh.

I know that feeling, sister. Don't take this the wrong way, but this place is so white. I'm kind of tired of being asked about where I'm from and what Filipino culture and food is like. How about you ask me about who I am and what I find interesting?

I think you get that in any area where the ethnic demographic is homogeneous. That's why I miss Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, San Diego and San Francisco. There are just so many opportunities to be exposed to different cultures. If I ever raise a family, it's going to be in one of those places or somewhere else similarly worldly and metropolitan.

You're moving back to the right place to either get an answer to your question or a swift cuff to the back of your head! Didn't you know that San Diego is like where most Filipinos in America live? tongue

cooking to impress:

i like to cook breakfast, in part because people have such limited expectations at that hour

so grilled fish, cheddar cheese grits, poached eggs, fresh scones (generally of oats), a homemade lemony whipped cream, with a big pot of coffee, of course

-----------------------

as for smoking--I like to say to folks "Those things'll kill ya...... but man do they taste good!"

-----------------------

All over that and every other Girl Talk release. i wondered how or why a live show of a man with a laptop would be any fun.

Part of the fun of Girl Talk is playing Name That Tune with people my age. Downside: the new release came in cuts, rather than a continual cut like the other two I got

------------------------

Be well, you're swell

fine hominy grits or coarse corn polenta, it makes no difference--add fats and salts and get happy

people will think you are from the south

end of Vancouver

i like grilled fish, shrimp or scallops with grits (and a poached egg is required). but i'd love to hear suggestions about how to pair with down homey veggies.

I would make wild mushroom tart in puff pastry. And possibly my favourite poached salmon in sundried tomato pesto. (all organic, all home made)

Heck, I might just have to make that tonight now.
