Right now, I'm sitting at home feeling so bummed. I just cancelled my flight to Vancouver. Due to a bunch of financial stressors this month, I won't be able to afford a trip! One of the things--the leaf springs on our f150 breaking and costing $1000 to repair--was kind of insane, but resulted in a really, really smooth ride. I drove home from my mom's this weekend and I tell you, since its repair driving the old redneck cadillac is a totally new experience!

I'm listening to Lykke Li and missing my number one California lady, miss Irinka. It's really fucking cold and lame here right now. The entire spring and summer have been complete balls. Snow in May. Rained all June. Half of July has been cold and rainy! Yesterday I had to hide out in Safeway while golf ball sized hail smashed around Kensington. Today it was so damp and chilly--only 11C or something. This is supposed to be summer, goddamnit! On top of my (typically Albertan) weather complaints, I have to rant about the bugs. I didn't remember the mosquitoes being like 2 cm long! It fuckin' figures.

And here's a photo of me & my lady. I miss you Irinka<3<3<3<3<3

Also big in my life right now: using my kitchen so hard. On Sunday I made sushi, miso soup, strawberry jam and bread! Yesterday I worked on a batch of pierogies (half of which is still frozen in my freezer) and froze some blueberries for use later. Today I just finished a batch of chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookie dough freezer bites. Kind of a mouthful, but a fucking amazing mouthful of chocolate cookie goodness. And it would be a shame if I didn't mention the delightful smell coming from my robot boulanger right now!! Oh yes, warm bread, I will eat you as a bedtime snack.

Some food stuff I'm looking forward to soon: picking asparagus & otherwise learning how to can, so I can preserve the farmers market bounty into the winter. Making cupcakes to bring to work (I made some chocolate-vanilla marble ones that were a hit at a family reunion this weekend. Getting some rhubarb (that shit is tasty). Ordering some vanilla beans so I can make my second batch of vanilla extract. Making another cooking video SOMEDAY!

Here is me in my glorious (ha) kitchen a few months ago, by my lovely friend yellowdays. She came to visit me in April and I stuffed her with some intense vegan food. It's awesome to have cooking pals<3

How's summer in your neck of the woods?

I am a longtime fan of extreme deliciousness. I can also be convinced to provide beer.

I think you should use that kitchen a little harder and send me some fudge. To make up for your lack of visiting.

really enjoyed this post, great reading! the now smooth running F-150, hiding in Safeway from golf ball sized hail (have always thought a rural myth!)..then all the baking and your happiness in the robot bread maker doing its thing. and your friend standing bare-footed on the cool linollium of your kitchen..ahh. if all mid summer laments could be so cool! thanks for sharing. more please!

Our weather has been similar, except after raining all june, we had two days of almost 100 F (38 C) weather and now we are finally at something normal for summer.

And the mosquitos are big from the rain probably. The lavae live in the water. We are having the same issue here, or at least we have more of them than normal.
