The underlying idea is that we are what we are because of what we do or, rather, how we do it. In our actions, we express who or what we are (or presume ourselves to be). In other words, we externalize our inner being, so that our actions are a reflection or ourselves. But they are not only reflections. There is a "feedback loop" between our actions and our being. Every action acts upon our self and contributes to the entire structure of the person we tend to be.
