Last night was all about the BBS revival. It was a random occurance that made my night. It almost took me back. Back to my first computer in 1994. It was a 486 built by my godparents' son. Complete with Windows 3.1 and a Dos menu. My games included Prince of Persia, Doom, Wolfenstein, Leisure Suit Larry and somehow a strip Mahjong game. It was hilarious. As you played more puzzles, these tles would become fade out to real a section of a sexy mostly naked asian broad. A very appropriate computer game for a 14 year old girl. Anyway, At this time, I got turned onto the world of the BBS by from computer class friend Dave. Who I actually wrote about on the boards a while back and then he contacted me over myspace. Regardless, I used my 14.4 model to connect to other people for the first time ever. I can't recall at all where I actually connedted to, but I do believe my friend's friend was a sysop at the place I frequented most often. Oh man, I used to play the awesome door game LORD and loved it. Oh Seth Able, sing me songs!

Anyhow, that all came to an end one afternoon when I received a phone call from the police. Now, I almost wish I could say this is because of l33t h4x0rz, alas, it was because a fellow nerd was somehow receiving death threats over this BBS. Apparently, he decided it was me and my friend doing it. His name was Eric and he told the cops I was making threats against him, his family and his dog. No joke. I was completely beside myself. While it was probably a bad idea at the time, I gave the cop such attitude because it was such a ridiculous situation. Sadly, after that conference call, my mom removed the phone cable and I was no longer allowed to telnet.

A short while later, AOL and the free disc invaded, followed by the confusing bill of $100+ dollars. "I thought it was free!". And thus, the act of Phishing emerged ...

Totally unrelated, the LA Tofu Festival is this weekend, Dead Rising is out today and Lumines Live has a Marketplace date of September 6th.

Dead Rising is a game, innit? Dammit. For a second I thought a band I hadn't heard of (but with a really cool name) had slipped a new CD under my radar. Sebadoh's III reissue comes out today. Might make for a good background soundtrack... I'm no help.

Ah the wonderful days of BBS, I was addicted to a game called Trade Wars that I played on my Atari 1200 until I could upgrade to a Commodore 64. But after I got the Graphical Powerhouse that was my Amiga 1000, I moved on to the wonderful world of Video Editing and Graphic Design because ASCII was so passe. I miss my Atari and my Amiga frown

Cheers.

Your childhood geekery sounds similar to mine. A friend and I ran a local BBS. I was in charge of running all the DOORS. We even installed some of the real-time ASCII drawn mods for LORDS.

We also distrubted a little bit of contraband, such as the Anarchist's cookbook.

We wuz so l337 :-p.

LORD and MajorMud owned my nuts like whoa.

BBSn' is pretty much what caused my downward spiral into Nerville. We called ourselves Chunkers. (long story)

Even though you're of the SoCal area, is it too much to assume you were on 4Next, Emerald Isle or Active Matrix?
