New painting! Succubus. 36"x36". Acrylic on wood. For Sale.
She's going into a Halloween-themed show next week. I am really happy that I was asked to do this piece because it allowed me to let go and do things that I normally hold back. I was thinking, well, if she's got to be a monster I might as well go all-out. Usually I'm too concerned with making something appealing and pretty to add darker or more erotic details. I know that sounds silly.
Anyways, I think I'm done with wood for a while now. I want to work on paper. There's more freedom with paper now that I have new skills to make better paintings. Before, I liked wood because it gave me a starting point - it gave me a color, a composition. It allowed me to build on what was already there. I think I've gotten to a point with my work where I want to have more control now. I no longer need to use photo references so much and my colors are coming straight out of my head so paper is going to allow me to translate what's up there more freely. I'm also going to be embarking on a new series of work with my partner. They'll be these intense, meditative mixed media pieces of abstract composition, visual texture, and emotive gesture.
Ever since I met him I feel like we have something really important to do. The other day I was pondering thoughts of soul-mates and relationships. A lover asked me to run away with him to an island, to leave my artist life and my partner behind. I entertained ideas of what that would be like. I feel like I could leave my partner knowing that, at the very least, when we die we will be together again so I am not afraid to leave him in this life. However, immediately the thought came to me that it would be a disservice to the human race if we were separated, that something important would not be enacted. What a strange thought! I don't know if that is my ego talking. It's not like we're planning to become eco-warriors or peace-keepers. All we know is that we have to make art together. I guess the answer will be quite evident once we start producing work. Stay tuned.
P.S. I'm making a little trip to Agent Provocateur this week to get something to class up all of the debauchery that will be taking place in the next few weeks. This will include shooting a new set at some point...
