A post on internet hate speech and hypocrisy, inspired by the 700+ comment discussion thread here. I suggest reading the article and at least the first hundred comments before you read this, otherwise you'll be missing some context and I'll be pissed. I have absolutely no fucking patience to explain this to anyone further than linking the fucking discussion. So, my thoughts:
If you think racism is wrong, don't call people racial epithets on the internet, whether you're serious or not.
If you believe in equality for GLBT people and between women and men, don't call people faggots and cunts, or tell rape jokes, whether you're serious or not.
And don't fucking tell me that if I don't want to deal with harassment I should avoid "being open" about being a woman on an unmoderated forum. I shouldn't have to wear an internet burkha to avoid someone's prejudicial language (whether heartfelt or not) because guess fucking what? Joking about anally raping a woman until she bleeds will bother me just as much whether I have a male, female, or ambiguous nym. The problem isn't the minority group feeling alienated. The problem is the environment which allows such trivializing, marginalizing, alienating behavior.
If you care enough about issues of equality to vote for candidates and laws that support such issues, don't you think that daily derogatory, marginalizing remarks go against your efforts of fighting such bigotry? If you say "Well, it doesn't effect me, so I don't bother" you're being a privileged douche canoe. You're adding to a hateful, hostile climate because you're too fucking intellectually lazy to make the effort to NOT call someone a faggot, nigger, kike, chink, or talk about how many different ways you would rape them. I'm seriously fucking sick of this shit.
It doesn't take that much fucking effort to avoid such speech. People who are not straight white males shouldn't be forced to put up with a hostile environment because some people are too fucking lazy to avoid such speech, or even call out the people who flippantly say that sort of shit all the time.
Here's a fucking tip: voting for Obama doesn't make you a positive force in the anti-racism movement if you call people niggers in your daily internet life.
