I have been asked a few times my opinion on the new Hobbit movie....

I am a (new) die hard fan of the novel, as well as LOTR.

Not of the movies....

I have a very strong opinion about the movie, but I want to know what you all think.....

It's a great fandom. <3 I feel bad you didn't become a fan sooner!

the movie is an IMAX ride, pillaging the more interesting anecdotes from Tolkien's Silmarillion (which is okay) and re-purposing the orcs of Isengard *twice* -- plus, the dwarves are nearly characterless, depending upon un-batlle-worthy un-workingman freakin' beard-dos for some semblance of identity. It was nice to see the scenery and the Shire, and Rivendell et al. but -- no. not a good movie, I love the books and I loved the LOTR films, but this.. meh.

That's the thing about fandom. There's no statute of limitations, and things go in and out of fashion all the time.

The movies are cool, it's nice to see what someone else can imagine, read the books, you'll be surprised of how much you can imagine, Tolkien was a genius.
And of course, first read The Hobbit, then the LOTR (3 books) and if you wish, you can read later on The Silmarillion (its not light reading) this books pretty much describes the story since the beginning of times and so on..
Good to know that you're now a fan, welcome to the club, oh, btw, I loved your sets, you're gorgeous love smile

I was extremely disappointed in the movie... Don't get me wrong, very well made and well done but the ENTIRE movie is just story building for the next two. While that will help those who have never read the book, it kind of takes away from power of the novel. Those of us who have read it got almost nothing out of the movie besides a something pretty to look at. BUT I am a biased person who likes to tear apart how much a movie has ruined the paper counter-part. I went light on this one because I know it will all be redeemed with the next installment. It's the same thing that happened with the LOTR film series.

This was the very first book I had to read in school English Lit class, I loved it and my old teacher Mr Sullivan knew just how to get us to read and that was by giving us such cool books and not the normal stuff like Shakespear, Bronté and so, although they did come later. Been a fan ever since.

I saw it today. It felt to me too much like the LOTR trilogy. I get that Peter Jackson has a vision, but do something different with this. I agree with Oldernow that the dwarves lacked character development. You would think that with 3 movies....
Anyway, the movie is OK, but the books are truly unique. I haven't read The Hobbit in quite a while. I probably should again soon. I remember reading it aloud to my son when he was about 5 or 6. That was special.

I can't read Tolkien. I haven't read all the books but the movies are not that great. If you ask me, they would have worked better as television series. That said, I want to track down that Samirileon whatever.

I heard about you in the news and I hope your stuff settles in your favor.
