WARNIG: Total chick post.

So, it's been a really long time since I had "real"l hair. Like a REALLY long time. And now my hair is finally starting to get long enough to qualify as "real" hair.

I have always been convinced that I probably had good hair, if I could just figure out what the fuck it wanted. I was raised by a mom with stick-straight hair, who spent hours upon hours trying desperately to get a brush through my curls while I screamed and wailed as if I was being killed. Somewhere around 18, I finally found out that you aren't supposed to brush curly hair. Well, NO WONDER I had that awful white girl afro!!!! But I never really got past that point. And then I got dreads.

So, yesterday for the first time in my life I made a proper appointment with a curly hair specialist. Which I didn't even know existed. Holy crap! They have stylists for this shit! Stylists with ninja skills! I can't get in till September, but meanwhile I followed all these links on her blog and discovered all SORTS of useful things I didn't know. Like that terrycloth causes frizz. And what "Plunking" is. I feel like I've stumbled upon some secret trove of girl-knowledge to which I was previously oblivious...

Curl heads- any advice for me as I embark on this strange journey?

I've always kept my curls cut really short to prevent the frizz, and applied copious amounts of product as it got longer before I could get it cut. Thanks to your post, plunking might be an option if I decide to grow it out.

you rock.

^Before I got dreads, I swore by this stuff. ^

I never did the plunking thing. I used a diffuser to dry the roots so they got nice and big and then gently half-dried the rest, trying to touch it as little as possible.

Being butch has advantages, I can just cut out the curls. But when my hair has been long I have sausage curls. I've never heard of a curl hair specialist. You'll have to share what you learn as a public service announcement.

Long thick curly hair is about as good as it can get. Not much help I know but I am deficient chickness.

my brother has very prominent curls and used to have long hair so he has had his hair chemically straightened on many occasions... which smells awful but works quite well

i myself have an expensive ceramic straightener... but my hair is just wavy/curly

The longer it gets (at least on me) the straighter it falls and gets easier to rake a brush through

I inherited my dad's natural wavy hair, but what it really is...is FRIZZ! And, my hair hates humidity. I'm letting my hair grow out now, and going back to long hair from short changes everything. When your hair gets to a certain point in the "growing-the-hair-out" process, it has different needs than the short hair.

So, I've been on a hair journey, too. I've recently discovered Herbal Essences hair products, and now my hair feels like silk. I dunno if you color your hair or not, but I use this shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair as it seemed like ev'thing else I used was washing out my hair color. That particular one has acai berry & satin in it. And, I found this leave-in creme for the frizziness. These products have transformed my hair, really, it feels so soft & satiny now. Since yours is more curly though, I bet the Tousle Me Softly products would be great for your hair. If you want to try them, the products are pretty inexpensive as well, around $4/bottle. smile Just to give ya some ideas lady, hope you find something that works for your hair.

Love your new set, too, you look lovely! love

Team Dark Weekend... winners!!

DevaCurl is an amazing line for curly hair. I personally have stick straight... but I still use their other products. So so good.
If you ever need some clip ins and whatnot, you know who to call. ^.~*

also ... I saw the old MythBusters with you in it again, and I totally squealed.
I cant wait to live in the same state as you.

My hairdresser (who specializes in curly hair) told me not to wash it very often. She said once a week would be enough, and just condition and really scrub your scalp with your fingers in between. It really helps to define the curls, and stops it getting so frizzy.

I never knew about plunking, it's amazing.
