They're my favourite baddie too, psychologically they draw on that real childhood fear of what remains unseen, of what happens in the dark or behind your back. I also love (on a total nerd level) how I suspect the idea behind them is very similar to ideas by the philosopher Berkeley, who argued that once you stop sensing something it ceases to exist as you know it.

I've only been to one village in Southern Italy for work once in a village north of Rome and in the centre - Rieti - but that was scary enough. So quiet.
