Do bands make great albums anymore? Is it all about one or two amazing tracks and the rest of the album an after thought?

Do you still buy whole albums?

What is the last GREAT album you bought?

When I hear a new band or artist I will get one track try them out and then buy the album if I am really into them, but honestly I have been so disappointed lately. Just heard Butch Walker and fell in love with "They Don't Know What We Know" and then bought the album. ehhhh. I miss the days of Doolittle where all but one song was brilliant.

Now I am just sad. frown

What album should I buy to make me happy?

xoxo

p.s. what is the best Black Sabbath album to buy? Maybe I just need to rock.

Albums are an artifact of vinyl LP's, cassette tapes and then CD's. In the digital age, everything is playlists. I think the music industry is going to go back to "singles" entirely except without the "B-Sides" which themselves were an artifact of vinyl 35's. Basically there will be singles released as a group (the new "album") and singles released to the web (underground/indie). It's a shame because there was a brief period in the 70's when bands were intentionally making "concept" albums. Like, you couldn't imagine a better playlist than the specific order of songs they provided. The art of the album is going to be gone.

Missy:

This is not new music but you should check out Mercedes Sosa. I have her 30 Anos album and it is brilliant.

It is tough to find those albums that are song to song great. Like most people these days I buy "tunes." Individual songs and never a whole album. You buy what you like I guess and those songs that would have grown on you had you bought the album don't always get the chance.

Although, I decided to use a couple of iTunes gift cards leftover from Xmas and bought the new Gorillaz. So far it's pretty good but I haven't gotten all the way into it.

Some "tunes" I've bought and liked:
Groove Armada - "Time & Space" and "History" (Black Light)
The Horrors - "Three Decades", "Scarlet Fields", "Sea within a Sea" (Primary Colours)
Heartless Bastards - "The Mountain" and "Out at Sea" (The Mountain)
Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds - "I Found a Peanut", Rare as the Yeti", "Pumpkin Pie" (Dracula Boots. Actually bought the whole album. Sometimes has a Vampyros Lesbos feel to it, if you know what I mean. Not bad album, though)
Marnie Stern - "Vault" (This is it and I am it)
Neal Hefti - "Batman Theme" (Batman Theme & 19 Hefti Bat Songs, you've heard this before but boy does the original, full length, rock)

As for a good Sabbath, Heaven & Hell is good for the Dio period and Paranoid for Ozzy's time. You should also check out an album that is wall to wall good, Judas Priest's "Point of Entry."

Best, Michael

I think bands are all different the quality of music depends on their passion. I hate grabbing an album with one good song and a bunch of filler songs. Artists must be frustrated as well because of so many people downloading.

Sabbath is my specialty-- definitely Volume 4 or Master of Reality. Those are the best!
I really have an odd record colection-George Michael, Slayer, Aphex Twin, Madonna, Lamb of God, Prince and the Doors all on one shelf. I'm serious--that's the order they're in!
Cyndi Lauper makes me happy... btw if you're lookin for happy music!
