Missy At the height of his power Pablo Escobar shipped 70-80 tons of cocaine monthly. A niche product can have a massive audience.

Do bands make great albums anymore? Is it all about one or two amazing tracks and the rest of the album an after thought?

Do you still buy whole albums?

What is the last GREAT album you bought?

When I hear a new band or artist I will get one track try them out and then buy the album if I am really into them, but honestly I have been so disappointed lately. Just heard Butch Walker and fell in love with "They Don't Know What We Know" and then bought the album. ehhhh. I miss the days of Doolittle where all but one song was brilliant.

Now I am just sad. frown

What album should I buy to make me happy?

p.s. what is the best Black Sabbath album to buy? Maybe I just need to rock.

My favorite album right now is Jack's Mannequin's "The Glass Passenger". It chronicle's the lead singer's struggle with leukemia and his remission, as well as how his relationships changed during that time.

Depends on who you ask. I'm the opposite in that I buy the whole album and occasionally there are one or two tracks I'll never listen to again. But I'm a completest so I hang onto those tracks anyway.

The last great album I "bought" was probably Marc Wilkinson's score for Blood On Satan's Claw. A bit obscure, I know.

The last Matt & Kim record was solid all the way through.
Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is possibly my favorite record of all time.

The last great album I bought was probably
Era Vulgaris - Queens of the Stone Age.
GOOD albums are rare these days, sadly.

New bands consist of younger artists who didn't grow up having to go to the record store to have access to good music, so the album may not seem as relevant to them as a product or a statement. Old bands can still bring it sometimes- The Flaming Lips come to mind. If you listen to genres that appeal to solitary males aged teen to middle, like metal and indie rap, bands like tool, mastodon, and el-p make whole albums. They have a fanbase that still buys them.

As far as Sabbath, I have to cast the black sheep vote for Volume IV, especially in light of this discussion- it's an awesome whole album listen, even though it doesn't have as many "greatest hits" type singles as the others. To listen to front to back, it's the best of the lot.

Girlschool Greatest Hits Collection. Like a female version of Motorhead. Really sick riffs, great attitude, just plain good.

You want a good album, then get Two Dancers by Wild Beasts.

The first four Black Sabbath Albums were all great, but Black Sabbath and Master of Reality are the ones I listen to most.

Honestly, I don't listen to much of any current music. The most recent band I listen to is Cake, they rarely let me down. Mostly I go with older music; Hank Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee... all so talented.
