- Chanel is selling temporary tattoos.

- The front runners on American idol could be indie artists.

Crystal Bowersox

Lily Scott

Andrew Garcia - he even has a neck tattoo.

and Jessica Simpson is doing a show called The Price of Beauty that explores alternative beauty from around the world, and apparently is dating Billy Corgan who wrote the theme song with her.

Do you feel alternative culture is being embraced or co-opted?

I like the Idols thing, the other two are just prissy people trying to find an edge that they dont have.

I dug the fb story smile

Those tats are ok, but I think Chanel coulda done better, especially at $75 a pop!

I'm not sure what co-opted means blush but I definitely think capitalism will (continue to) cash in on alternative beauty, alternative health, alternative lifestyles, the way it does with everything... frown

I am a Crystal and Andrew fan!!! I adore them both, they are both real and humble, interesting and talented!

I will probably watch the Jessica Simpson show, just because I love shows about the people of other cultures. I just hope they don't make it all about Jessica.

I think SG changed the world, one alternative beauty at a time wink

This happens all the time...eventually counterculture just becomes THE culture. But if it means more people want to look at beautiful naked altgirls then I'll roll with it.

I think for some people, Jessicas simpsons show is going to be rather uplifting and there are a lot of people out there that don't know these other cultures. Even plugs for example are used for beauty but most think it was strictly a mans thing in ALL cultures, which isnt true. Ignorance is bliss but i think mtv vh1 or whatever one it is needs some slight education. Might be refreshing.

I think it's just cyclical. Something about the indie/alt culture has momentarily caught the eye of mainstream culture....and it's playing with it like a new toy on Christmas morning. Soon enough...they'll grow tired of it and move on to the next "thing".

The more people see of it the more they will accept it, I believe, and I'm okay with that. I didn't change my body to be perceived as different; as Daria said, "to fit in to some subculture's notion of beauty" wink

Co-opted, I'm afraid. If anything even vaguely "alternative" shows up on f***ing American Idol--of which my square-as-a-rubik's-cube, 82-year-old dad is a fan!--then it's time to take out the earrings, laser off the tattoos, and shock the world by buying a suit and combing my hair. (Ugh!)

I feel the world is changing but america is just starting to catch up...and i fear this could just be a phase like kango hats and velor jumpsuits... what a night mare!!! i do wish SG was puttin more alt beauty up on the front page and not the same type of girls... SG should step back out of mainstream but still set the bar for beauty!!!

Buck-up and get a real tattoo
That's GREAT about idol.

Jessica needs top stop grasping at straws. I highly doubt she is interested in any kind of alternative beauty.

I vote for Co-opting....

I for one support the Alternative life style... I never saw it as rebellion or shunned it out.... But I think that what Chanel, American Idol and this whole Simpson thing.... Not bashing on Jessica or anyone... is doing is trying to buy into the whole alt lifestyle as a fashion... A couple years back tattoo's where an act of rebellion and seen as discusting on women... Now it seems that you aint cool or mainstream if you dont have one..... Once again, not bashing on tatt's or people who have them.... Punk's also where freaks and undisciplined kids.... Now at least 1out of 3 people either have Hawks or some spikey hair doo, studded belts or some form of appareal.... Im glad that the whole alt style is being accepted but I dont want to see it as mainstream fashion... Its an individual statement, so if I see my grandma alt all of a sudden or some wackjob doing it to fit in... Just like troqman said I also will join the Corporate world and become another suit...
