I want to talk about going to the gym today. And no I'm not GOING to the gym. About a year and a half ago my husband wanted to go join the gym. SO the whole family joined. We lived on the outskirts of what is the wealthiest neighborhood in the state so most of our shopping and our gym going is right in the heart of it. This means of course that we need to keep up a little so we do not attract too much negative attention when going about our day. It means upon joining this gym we had to then spend a couple hundred dollars on a work out outfit and then more on the right shoes and a bag and a lock for the locker and whatever else. The gym is like a fashion show for trophy wives and gay trophy life partners/husbands/boyfriends.

On our 3d visit to the establishment I was on an elliptical machine watching the tight toned, size 0 ass of the blond in front of me on the treadmill in her Juicy Couture workout outfit and a number of high end accessories like a little pouch for her bottled water and her perfect hair cut and color and gel nails and other such gear and I became suddenly repulsed. Not by her but by the whole thing. Here were all of these people, because there was a whole line of the same kind of people all looking the same and all doing the same thing and I thought to myself that this had to be a metaphor for the gluttony of America. Here were people who got into their $50,000+ cars to drive to a multi million dollar building which costs thousands to keep lit and climate controlled every month, paying money to be here to mindlessly run like hamsters in a wheel to burn off the excess they consume. I thought how much more useful these expenditures of energy could be. What if these same machines were hooked to generators to at least offset the energy used to keep the building powered. What about if these same people instead of wasting 1 to 2 hours running and lifting dumb weights and eating power bars and drinking fruit smoothies with various "boosts" would instead volunteer that time and energy to Habitat for Humanity or go out and clean up a park or volunteer to build a playground or go clean the house of a bedridden elderly person or clean kennels at an animal rescue or take dogs from the impound out for walks and both get some exercises or any number of other useful and helpful things which could make the world better. Instead they are all lost in their own worlds, putting on their fashion show, listening to their Ipods or texting on their Blackberries or watching other people play an actual camaraderie building sports activity. All alone surrounded by people. All wasting energy because we are so gluttonous that we have energy to waste like this while holding it as virtue. That moment I stopped the machine I was on, and went to the locker room and put on my leaving the gym clothes and canceled my membership. My husband still goes but I refuse. It was a strange moment I had and to this day I get a knot in my stomach whenever he says he is going there. I get it more now because having moved again, I live in a sea of boxes which he feels because he works at a desk all week he should not have to help me move and unpack. But he willingly pays money to go expend energy at that shrine to American gluttony. So strange.

I'm not knocking being in shape and looking and feeling good I'm knocking the methods used to get there. I was never in better shape than when I was building Habitat homes and when I was landscaping my yard. I do go jogging with my dogs and my husband in the AM or PM sometimes and I get into shape when I rehearse for the stage shows I do when the band has shows. It's just the whole industry of the gym which bothers me.

A saddening yet accurate depiction of the world we live in. Reality does not apply for the masses of huddled lemmings it seems.

on the other hand, I DO go to a gym and I heart it. but it distinctly lacks in ellipiticals and size zero babes; it's mostly duffers on their lunch hour (me) and members of the local softball teams doing weightlifting. the walls are grey, the duds are grey, white or somewhere in between, the tennis shoes are mostly from Mallwart and there's a healthy comaraderie folk. As it happens I go because of having a busted neck and needing a ton of therapy to stay mobile... did go to an upscale place ONCE, backed away carefully smiling and keeping eye contact with the denizens until I reached the safety of my car and skeedaddled YMCA-wards. and yes, it is worse than doing habitat, but far better than trolling the interwebs, hitting a bar after work and the like... so I guess we all gotta pick our outlets and our charities..

I know what you mean, I found going to the gym a very similar experience and canceled after three months. I think staying in shape is good, but from now on if I do that kind of exercise it will be at home, where I can listen to decent music and not even think about what brand of shoes or track pants I am wearing!

WOW - that is quite a bit of thought that went into your blog. However, I must confess I do go to such a gym. I just happen to work for a company which pays my fee and is listed as one of the largest gyms in North American. It comes with a whole medical staff, 4 pools, 3 cardio training rooms, spa & salon, daycare, indoor tennis courts, racket ball courts, squash courts, and a basketball court that is surfaced with the old floor of our pro basket ball team.

So I see a lot of what you speak about. To be honest, I do a 55min ab class twice a week and the only reason I keep going back is go I can be in the back of the room and see all the nice views in tight yoga pants. That alone for me is worth all the fees, + I am getting a little in shape wink

I find the concept of recycling energy very interesting. Wouldn't it be great if we could hook up all the treadmills and elliptical machines in all the gyms in the country to power generators that would feed back into the local power grids? Think of all the energy we could save!

I can't agree that comparing a gym to volunteer work is really a fair point. If you are joining Habitat for Humanity or the Peace Corps so you can 'get in shape', I think you are joining for the wrong reason.

Fuck yes, I agree with everything in your blog.

Running around your neighborhood with your dogs is a better way to exercise anyway, I think.

THANK you so much for your long answer in the group. You are such a sweetheart for taking the time to write such a long answer.

I might order Excedrin now... it sounds good. The idea of a food journal is also very good. I mean all this food that triggered your migraine- I would have never believed that this food could trigger it. That is so fucking weird. maybe I have a trigger food or drink that I need to find out and then I will be saved? You never know wink

Its funny that you mention Xanax, because I took paxil for my anxiety attacks and my migraine got better. I tapered Paxil off some years ago, but maybe it would be the time to get back on antidepressants ( as I also feel depressive again *sigh*)

What you wrote about emotional triggers sounds very intelligent. I am a person that is very sensitive and I worry a lot, so maybe I should avoid situations that could trigger a migraine.

Other fact: I have read your blog and I like your writing style. I will read your other blogs this week when I find time.

I deleted a lot of my blogs, because there were some people stalking on my profile puke skull

yet another reason why i don't go to the gym. Well that and i am lazy.

However you just gave me a brilliant idea for a project. I am going to try to find a treadmill to turn it into a generator.

Girl I agree! I have been thinking the same things for a while now. We run around working so we can buy stuff and rinse and repeat.. or even worse we run around working to for things we have already bought on credit ( house not included) but what does it really all mean? Fuck marketing for making us slaves, most are so hooked into the grid that they cannot realize what has happened to them.
