It all started when someone had bumped an old thread discussing the Enumclaw incidenet, which led to a discussion on unusual deaths, which lead me to the story of Christine Chubbuck.

Christine was a Sarasota, FL newsanchor who had shot herself on air.

"If it bleeds, it leads"

She was tall, beautiful, and as her mother described her, "[T]he only person I ever knew who would walk into a room and every head would turn... yet nobody ever came over." She was intelligent, witty, self-deprecating, and volatile. According to her brother, Greg, "Things were either black or white; they were either wonderful or terrible. She had no compromise button."

She was depressed. She had no close friends. She was a 29 year-old virgin. No one was surprised when she killed herself. When it happened, a cameraman shouted to her, "Christine, that was the worst joke I've ever seen!" and the station manager stormed out from his office to berate her for pulling a stunt like that. The blood and her twitching body gave her away. Not only was she not taken seriously when she discussed committing suicide, but she was met with derision as it actually happened.

Christine's situation is not entirely unique. I may even go as far to say that it's a symptom of living in Florida. She died 9 years before I was born, but reading about her story felt like losing a friend.

I've always been a fan of ball-jointed dolls, but it wasn't until recently that I've found one that I finally want to bring home.

Enchanted Doll is the work of Marina Bychkova who is inspired by fairy tales when creating her dolls. From her page:

"Creating a visual narrative is the most intriguing way of articulating my ideas and a doll is a perfect medium because of its potential for such visual story. My strong tendency for escapism has made the make belief narrative of fairy tales very appealing as a context for my dolls. What interests me most about fairy tales is the implicit and often explicit violence that lies just beneath the surface of the magic.

I refer to various sources for inspiration and idea development. Any artist and especially a doll artist, must look outside of their medium and aesthetic for inspiration to avoid regurgitating what's already been done a million times. I find nothing more boring and thoughtless than another girly girl doll with blond curls and a puffy dress holding a teddy bear. Ugh!"

From an interview with Marina on Pixelsurgeon:

Your dolls are very darkly erotic; definitely not children's toys! Is the doll's sexuality an important part of their attraction for you?

The eroticism is definitely a significant element that has to be present in every doll. I suppose that says something about my personally, I'm just not sure what. It was present in all my dolls. I remember when I was, maybe six or so, I saw a picture of a painting of a beautiful naked woman in a magazine. It was explicit. I cut it out and made a doll out of it. One day my grandma discovered it. She was confiscated and destroyed with disdain. I was made feel very ashamed. I grieved for her.

The dolls are more anatomically correct than your average Barbie doll; why was it important to include detailed genitalia?

It's compulsory. Most of the dolls, both, Fine Art and children's dolls, though try to imitate human form, are sterilized through a complete removal of sex organs. It's as if they need to be cleansed of all their sinful humanity. I find this deliberate denial of the essence of life to be ignorant and appalling. I don't know why there is so much fear and shame associated with human sexuality. Every Barbie needs to have a vagina. Every Ken needs a penis. I think it's time the dolls leave the realm of tea parties and innocence and address some important issues.

The rest of the interview can be found here.

These beauties don't come cheap. Unlike other ball-jointed dolls, these are porcelain and due to all the fine details, can take up to 350 hours to complete. It's an investment in fine art and an heirloom. According to the Enchanted Doll forum prices range from $2600-$15000 USD depending on complexity. That's like... the price of a diamond engagement ring without the guilt and slave labor. blackeyed

Persoanlly, I've been pining for the beautiful and ethnically ambiguous Ebe, but she has long since been discontinued.
