i spent the weekend camping in the woods with a huge group of friends. it was delightful... this is what summer's about! here are some photos - and yes, i know i hang out with incredibly good-looking people. (i didn't take these!)

zoom image

i'm not much of a camper - i'm just generally miserable when i'm dirty, and i hate tents - but big trips like this are kind of the quintessential summer activity. we drank a lot, ate charred food, bonded over guitars and lake water. sometimes i feel like i miss out on "normal" activities. god knows why. i'm a giant brain floating in space. i alone command the spice.

also, i've been watching heroes obsessively. i've been watching multiple episodes a day. i hope i get a full-time job soon so i will stop being so pathetic. it's just such an addictive show. i have even been having dreams about it. i hope i have another one tonight.

i just tried to find a heroes slash fanart image to post, but no dice.

the mushroom scramble i talked about in my last journal entry

question of the day: are there any "quintessential activities" you feel like you've missed out on? how much of that do you think is fed by the TV/movie image of what life is supposed to be like?

Birthday parties are the only ones I can think of, my last party was when I was 6. I didn't celebrate turning 16, 18 or 21 at all and after going to friends parties for such things I do feel I missed out.

I do actually miss backpacking, and have a bit of an ambition to try to do some next year after the dust settles from building the house. It's hard work, though, and I haven't done it in years, so it's anybody's guess if I'll enjoy it as much as I did in my twenties. I used to be a bit of a nut—I'd do the equivalent of two days' hike in, sleep, and then hike out, because that way I got two full long days of sightseeing with minimal supplies. I don't think Andrea's going to go for that though.

Obviously, this is not particularly conventional, so I don't think it's TV-influenced. We mostly only watch DVDs, not regular TV, so I don't think we get a lot of TV peer pressure. I mean, you don't get "convention" from watching Buffy or True Blood.

We did go watch the fireworks this July 4 (that's a weird American holiday you've probably never heard of where we blow stuff up, apparently it has to do with some war in 1812 where we got our ass kicked a bit but managed to drive off an invasion). It was really nice—surrounded by a crowd of nice, local people. We didn't do the traditional barbecue first, though—too much prep work when you're vegetarian. No watermelon either—Andrea doesn't like it. But it was still pretty conventional. Oh, well, we sat on a yoga mat for the fireworks; maybe that was a bit weird.

The thing that I really miss though is going to concerts. We've got some big ones coming up soon, though—the Marlboro School of Music has a summer program where they play a ton of chamber music and even a few large ensemble pieces over the course of five weekends. We haven't been avoiding them—it's just that they aren't that frequent.

What's the yellow dust on your scramble?

If it is possible, you are even more awesome! Love Dune wink

There are far too many activities that I feel I have missed out on. But people tell me (especially wonderful people here!) that it's never too late. I hope they're right.

I was just remarking to a friend the other day, with dismay, that I haven't been camping since 2008 in Australia. This is unacceptable.

I also miss the hell out of you. Come over for a dinner and wine on the beach plus Heroes night?

I used to miss out on social activities like Birthday parties, hang outs and dinner dates... And yes, it did seem like that's what everyone else was doing (according to TV). Luckily I've been able to correct that (and then some) since retiring from tour. In this case - TV had it right! This stuff is such fun! I really was missing out tongue

I've missed out on most 'quintessential activities', but I can't say I'm disappointed about it.

Does Vegan food get less sterotypical when cooked on a stick over an open fire? further countering a primal meat image? I was thinking that scramble was going to be more omlete like, mushrooms and peppers bits sticking out of a layer of tofu, or something. Are you working part time somwhere? Good luck on the job hunt.

I have missed out on quintessential activities, any number of the girl friend ones. Real life is a good enought source of inspiration, with out tv. Still that coke ad from a few years ago about taking the train to the concert really gets me. I do feel i've missed out on having a mustang or camaro in my late teens early 20s. Breaking my leg, ankle or collar bone, seemed pretty common but I managed to avoid those bones anyways. As far as how much is feed by the tv ideal, I couldn't weigh it against how much of the tv ideal is from books, legends, and evolution.
