hi kitten-creatures. maybe you do not feel that term is descriptive of you; if that's the case, how would you prefer i address you?

so, last week i started this 35-day hot yoga groupon i got for $30. what a deal. anyway, i've been doing this intense yoga and my body is sore all the time, but i can already feel myself becoming more flexible. i have always been very naturally flexible but now that i am getting a bit older i can feel that flexibility melting away. i want to maintain it. (i turn 26 in a month and a half.)

zoom image(this is my post-yoga face)

what else? that chronic flat problem i was having was really frustrating. it just got more frustrating! i bought a new tire and new tubes but nothing worked, so eventually i brought it back in to the bike shop that fixed my chronic flat problem last fall and they gave me a higher quality tube and checked everything. so, if i get another flat this week, i'm just going to give up and buy puncture-proof tires for the $1,000,000 they probably cost. the frustration my chronic flat tire problem causes me seriously lowers my quality of life.

yesterday i jumped on a journal meme bandwagon and wrote out a list, with pictures, of every house i've ever lived in. holy crap, you guys, i have lived in a lot of places. i mean, i knew that, because i have an excel spreadsheet of all the places i'd lived, but it took me an hour and a half to do writeups for every house and screencap them on google street view. right now i am living in house number 22 of all-time - 18 in my adult life. and i haven't moved in a year! i had a transient youth.

pictured, the hellhole shithole asshole apartment that i moved into when i first moved away from home, in beautiful burnaby, BC, where there were few trees and lots of concrete. it was always humid and warm in that place. uck.

here's another slumhole i lived in for a month in victoria. crackheads stole EVERYTHING we left on our back porch, including 2 bikes, drying artwork, and lightbulbs.

fast forward a few years to malloreigh having a job, and i lived in THIS slumhole, which is actually not a super bad house. it was $1500. i lived here with redmess and rin among other lovely ladies. we had some sweet parties here and i had a badass bedroom, my own bathroom, and a balcony off the top floor.

last one for today, this was the "house of god" that i lived in with three of my best friends. it was a drop-in kinda place - friends would just stop by and we'd sit on the front porch and holler at passers-by, cook big vegan meals, smoke cigarettes, and have fun. i lived in this place longer than any other - for 14 months.

so tell me about you. how many places have you lived in? do you like moving, or do you prefer to avoid it? do you have a home in your past that you miss a lot? (i do. a couple, actually.) what does it take to make you move out?

me, i am moving again at the end of the summer. that's how it goes.

What an interesting blog ! You're, indeed, a transient creature. It made me think about all the places I lived in.... I think it's something about 14 or 15. Maybe more. Ha ! I'm gonna join in the bandwagon meme I'm afraid smile

2 houses in Fort McMurray
2 houses in Edmonton (including one I lived in twice) and one year in residence at university
2 basement suites in Toronto
2 condos in Calgary

I have done a lot of moving in the last decade and I'm pretty much over it now. I hate packing. I loathe cleaning. There are some times when I miss the houses I grew up in but then I remember they're back in Fort McMurray and the nostalgia disappears pretty quickly. I also miss my house in Edmonton sometimes but that is mostly because I miss my roommates.

Baaaaaad, I know. But I know a Kelen and she makes jokes about it all of the time and that sort of makes it alright.

And kitten-creature? I'll take it, only because I don't like honourifics (call me Mister if you want to annoy me) and I don't think anyone else has ever equated me to a kitten before anyway.

I've mentioned growing up in Fort McMurray before but not often. I don't have a lot of great things to say about it these days so I generally don't talk about it.

That said, I've always liked living in Alberta (for the most part) and having visited BC and lived in Ontario, I don't think I want to leave. Someone has to stay here and not be a total redneck. Everyone else seems to bugger off for the coast.

I've also really come to like living in condos. I've been staying in them since moving to Calgary and they seem to suit me just fine. I don't host a lot of parties so I don't need a lot of space for company and when I'm home I usually just read or watch TV. Maybe I'll move into a house some day.

I do have a profound love of rhythmically moving objects and tend to be incredibly quiet and kind of sneaky at times.

Also, I have this effect on people:

Apparently I lucked out. I'm living in a condo just off 17th. I can walk to a Co-Op, a Safeway and a Community Natural Foods. The three places I generally go to hang out with friends are within decent walking distance. If I had a bike I could get around even faster.

Of course, having spent a lot of time driving around the city, I've seen how bad the sprawl gets. I can totally understand how hard it would be to have that kind of convenience.

I hate moving. H8. But I love to be in a new place. It's a toss up, but since I'm already by default not moving, that gives it an advantage...

I've lived in nine places, in five cities and four provinces... but I have always always avoided it.

Dang, I thought I moved a lot! I have lived in 13 places. I actually hate moving, but I always have to either because of roommate changes or to find something better. I am a bit more stable now, though.

Hot yoga. Ouch. I guess it's not bad if you're starting out flexible, though. I've lived in a bjillion places. Let's see... I count 24 places since I left home, and the house we're building will be 25. And I'm skeptical that I got them all. My ex-girlfriend used to call me kitty, which seemed to make sense at the time, but kitten-creature seems strange now. Andrea makes up new names for me on nearly a daily basis.

Moving sucks. Andrea and I did a whole-house move from Arizona to Vermont in a truck we rented two Januaries ago. It took three days just to pack the truck—it was brutal. Then it took I think four days to drive to Vermont. That's probably the hardest move I've ever done. The move into the new house will be only a mile—we can do most of it in the Prius.

The house I miss most is the two-bedroom apartment I used to live in on Russian Hill in San Francisco. $1200/month. Insane. I don't think about it much, but man that was sweet. I used to commute on the cable car.

Get strong puncture-resistant tires. It's worth the money. Also, if you get a flat, make sure you do the blood test on the inside of the tire before you re-install the tube. This is where you run your finger around the inside of the tire until you hit whatever it was that punctured it. This frequently draws blood. You can try using a paper towel and looking for fluff, but it's not as reliable. If your tire will turn inside out, you can use the flat of your hand below the thumb, which is tougher, and you will still probably feel the thorn.

The chronic flat problem could possibly be the rim, rim tape, or spokes. If the inner edge of the rim is damaged from riding on a flat, hitting a curb too hard, etc the score marks and little nicks that don't feel like much to your hand can definitely damage a tube that's at full pressure while you are riding. If the rim tape isn't properly aligned or spoke heads are sticking through even very slightly, the same problem could happen. When a tube is at full pressure even something that seems insignificant can cause a problem. That all means nothing if you are actually finding punctures. In which case, you need to get heavy duty tires. They don't have to be the most expensive so don't let them upsell you to something crazy.

As far as how many homes I've lived in. I think it's about 20. Moved a lot as a kid because of my parents divorce and custody battles. I hate moving but every six months or so I do feel the need to make some big change.

I kind of like kitten-creature. I mean, it isn't too far from catdad. You have been a transient creature. My parents lived in three or four houses by the time I was three. One house from age three to six. Then they bought their current house. I had a 600 square foot studio apartment for five years before buying my current house. So, I've lived in only 7 or 8 places and I'm nearly 44. And I hate moving. I need time to get comfortable with a place in order for it to become my sanctuary and reclusion den. I feel most centered at home. I have no intention of leaving this place and already know what I would do to remodel and expand it if I find I really need more room.

I'm going to have to think about this, I don't know the number off the top of my head. I do miss my apartment on Alcatraz, there was something about it that I loved. Perhaps it was sitting in my kitchen, smoking cigarettes and gazing upon the neighbor's garden. And the parking lot kitty that I referred to as Wonkie.
