hola, chumps. (i don't mean it that way.)

my life is a simple thing these days. i woke up this morning and watered the garden. then i strained out the veg from the pot of broth i stewed yesterday. i drained and rinsed some black eyed peas i had been soaking then put them on the stove to boil with a bit of baking soda to prevent gas. i pureed some homemade habanero hot sauce, put it in jars, then boiled them in a pot of water to vacuum-seal them. i grated a zucchini and i'm about to grease some loaf pans.

these simple pleasures are what i prefer.

i even learned how to use a drill.

tell me: which simple things that make up your life bring you the most pleasure? is it your morning coffee, or your evening bath? the birds out your window? visits from the neighbourhood cat? choosing produce at the grocery store?

Going over the River Thames on a bendy bus on the way to work. The bus is rammed, full of people, old, and smelly, but the view down the river for those couple of minutes just makes everything seem grand. Specifically, this bridge.

Drinking tea out of this mug, everyday at work.

hurry for simple things and simple pleasures!
[boo black eyed peas though puke ]

oddly enough, I think brushing my dog is my greatest simple joy. It's a chore, and a ritual, but . . . it's oddly cathartic and I think even he likes it - - but that's probably more for the treats he gets afterwards.

I like this. I've been a bit meh, and thinking about the little things is a good thing.

I like waking up on the weekend, early, alone in my house and having coffee and listening to Ivy and Radio Dept.

And watching the swallows diving for the moths who are attracted to the exhaust at stoplights. They never get hit, they know just when to pull back up to the wires holding up the lights.

Does the baking soda trick work? How does it affect the flavor?

My morning coffee is definitely one of the nice comforts. I'm not sure whether it's better when I brew a big cup of filtered coffee, or when I make a macchiato, but either way it's something I look forward to. I wish I had a recipe for my favorite San Francisco scones--nobody makes anything like that out here.

I've also been getting into brooks recently. Yesterday Broad Brook was running really nicely when I rode up the hill next to it. Stickney Brook is lovely, and so is the West River. Brooks seem to be one of the perks of living in the mountains.

You're a kitchen goddess! I strive to invest real time and pleasure in nurturing my food like that.
For now my simple pleasure is getting some sun while walking my dog. smile

I like a simple life too and the things that interest me are learning, cooking, old buildings and nature. Being outdoors on a nice day is great too and I loved what I saw of Canada when I travelled from Toronto to Thunder Bay years ago.

does cleaning count? I'm seriously one of those wierdos that enjoys cleaning my house. I just zone out, vaccum away and feel good after. I also like sitting in my room with no noise and just drinking a tea.

Yes. All things food... especially baking bread- I could knead bread far longer than my wrists would allow. Forming perfect boules and wild yeast starters, tenderly coddling my dough into deliciousness over days.
Also, taking awful phone pictures of the view of Montreal from my window. Walking aimlessly through the streets, watching the people and feeling their energy feed my soul. All I have are the small things.

I just wrote this in a group, actually! But I love, love, love hanging laundry out to dry in the wind. I love doing it, I love watching the clothes dance in the breeze, I love the sunshine-y smell they have after they're dry.

I also really enjoy grinding spices with a mortar & pestle.

Wandering through the aisles at my local record store. Long bikes rides. Napping on my couch with the patio door open during a thunderstorm.
