guess what?

i voted!

yep, today there is a provincial election in british columbia (where i live, obvs). i am trying to make sure that all of my apathetic, cynical, hipster-as friends get their vote on. i have never heard a worthy excuse for not voting. if you're protesting the ineffectiveness of the canadian democratic system, fine - at least go in and spoil your ballot to show someone that you DO care. voter apathy is some fuckin' bullshit, my friends.

I tell people that I know that I don't want to hear them bitch and moan about the government unless you vote. I wish that there was a way that there could be a law writen that would obligate all american citizens to vote in each and every election that they are able to.

I totally agree, being a citizen includes rights and obligation, voting should be one of those obligations.

I got a bad tendency to scold anyone who doesn't vote mad Grrrr!!

As much as I do agree that politics are important and that voters apathy is a big problem, I don't think everybody should vote. And I really don't think there should be a law forcing the vote.

I think that if you don't know anything about the campaign, you shouldn't vote. I personally take time to get informed, but the people I heard the most telling others to vote were the ones that knew the least. For instance, if the only thing you heard was an ad by Harper telling people that he's a good father, it distorts the message. The real problem is the media here. A lot of people are very easy to convince, and when your party has a large control over television, you can create your own image, even if it's not true.

What sucks the most though is that, as you mentionned, intelligent people don't get out and vote. They are the ones you should try to convince. Actually, you should tell people to get informed, before telling people to go vote.

I mean, in a country like the US, would you (quietlythere) obligate every person who listens to Fox News to give their opinion?

Yep! If you don't vote, no one is going to try and change the system for you. At least spoil your ballot.
