Have you called the police or are you seeing them as not being able to help you right now?
If you don't want to call them just do a nice little military style sweep of the apartment and put something big in front of the door. It'll make you feel alot better.

As far as home security...have you thought about a security system? I had one installed after my apartment was broken into and it wasn't all that expensive and it did give me peace of mind.

I hope you found someone to hang out with you...after I read that I totally thought..."I could drive there, it's not that far.." That's just the big brother instinct inside me.
