It wasn't very responsible of them to keep ducks as pets without a fence to begin with. I don't know if they were taking the eggs or not. It never occured to me to wonder until I read this blog entry! I had no idea the nutritional value of eggs could be so different from one species to another.
And ducks do look happy and chickens mad. Then again, I don't think I've ever heard of ducks being cannibals either!
