I have had Absinth that a friend of mine brought back from the Czech Republic. It just tasted like liquor... like fennel seed liquor. The bottle I had didn't have any wormwood in it... I think that is what is supposed to give it the extra kick... but the stuff without wormwood seemed uninteresting, and not very good.

It tastes really bad, and it does something a little bit different than alochol. Hard to explain. Kind of like hits your really fast and really intense. My friend made it and I have a half a gallon of it!!! still. I have had it for about six months and I look at it each day and cringe. Gasoline might taste better.

A friend of mine brought some back from Andora and I passed out on her living room floor after about five, but I had been drinking all day. I had the best experience though because she ended up sleeping with my friend Craig that night.
The next time I drank it was in Portugal where a barman thought he would impress some girls by killing the two English swine (us) with his evil shooters. We had the last laugh though because we were on speed and could have drunk transmission fluid with no effect. The owner had to send him off in a cab and told us to forget our tab. You'll hallucinate on any booze if you drink enough, I think it is hype.

My first publication was on Absinthe in Ulysses, and I have a longer article on it coming out in a future James Joyce Quarterly.

The short answer is that it is mostly hype and be very careful of the home made stuff. But you'll be able to find out for yourself in a few weeks... I've got bottles of the stuff. seems like I know the topic for my first Cleveland dinner party...

yes, i have had absinthe before, the imported kind. i like it. although i don't think i had enough to really experience these so-called hallucinogenic properties. and i'd already been drinking. i'll have to down a bottle sometime. i'll let you know how it goes.

Ever since I saw From Hell, I've always wanted to try it, but since I live in conservative land, it's virtually impossible to find it. If you try it, I'll satisfy my curiosity, vicariously, through your experience.....

I've also made it once soaking wormwood and marijuana together for 2 days. Excellent for when you want to have the experience of intensely affecting philosophical debate... about something totally not worth debating.. like if elves really exist.

probably shouldn't type about who currently is in possession of whatever illegal substances on a public board... just a thought. it's different to talk of past experiences with things forbidden than to tell the world of someone's victimless crimes-in-progress in this new surveillance age..

Lorelei: tried some a few years ago, someone brought it in from czhech. i believe...hill's absinthe. two shots after burning some alcohol away. it felt like a mild opiate buzz combined with a sip of liquor and a hit a grass (i never inhaled!). it tasted like scope mouthwash, but otherwise i liked it.

remembering wishing we had more so i could 'learn' the full range of wormwood effects. alas, that was the only time i've seen it.
