I'm thinking about retiring as an SG photographer. Maybe you can give me some ideas or advice? Just listening to me vent is helpful too! smile

So, you probably noticed I'm not around much, and haven't been shooting for the site much. I'm just too frustrated. Problems:

I live in a conservative, spread out province with relatively few people who are willing and qualified to be SuicideGirls. I try to shoot models with a high chance of success, but there aren't many here. Finally a great one came along, and she was immediately flown to LA to have two sets shot with other photographers. She's probably the only SG in Alberta that I could shoot and feel confident about acceptance, but I can't shoot her for months now. I'm very happy for her and her success and still hope she takes of all opportunities presented to her, but it's still a bit of a bummer for me.

The US dollar is much weaker these days so I get paid a lot less than I used to.

Only about half the sets I shoot get bought, so that makes it even less.

Shooting and editing 50 great photos is difficult and time-consuming. I've tried hiring Cherry to do the retouching so I can focus more on paid work but none of those sets were bought so it cost me money to give content for Member Review.

I also have to compete with Cherry, who is an obvious staff and member favourite. I have nothing against her and think it's great she does well, and of course staff should do what is best for the site, but it is frustrating when Cherry's sets of the same models consistently get selected over mine. If her sets are really better than mine and the models here are willing to travel to work with her then maybe there's no point in my being around?

I just want to give up. I don't feel like I fit here anymore.

I think all i can say is i am sorry you feel this way. It does sound like site politics a little bit. I have always thought your sets are amazing.

My advice: If you can't think of any good reason to stick with it, then maybe it is time to let go. Focus your thoughts and attention on stuff that going to give you fulfillment and make you happy.

You are an amazing photographer, if that makes you feel any better.

I agree with the above poster. If something seems like a drag or you're just not into it any more, you have to move on and concentrate on things that make you happy. That or, you may want to move into a place that might make it a wee bit more conducive to being able do the things you love doing. Either way, best of luck you.

I can understand how this would be extremely frustrating. There's no point in doing something that only causes you stress... Maybe consider just doing it as a hobby rather than as a main source of income.
I'm sorry though.. Your sets are always beautiful.

"I try to shoot models with a high chance of success, but there aren't many here."
Isn't the point of SG to celebrate alternative beauty? Not the typical "high chance of success" beauty?

You're right about staff photographer sets being bought over an equally amazing non-staff set. So, having said that, you're sets are equally as amazing and you shouldn't get down about their quality. I vote you keep doing it because I love your sets, but keep in mind that it's suppose to be fun and different.

I’m sorry to hear you’re discouraged - - but from what you’ve said - - I can see why it would be frustrating. I know I’ve said this before, but you’re truly one of my favorite photographers on this site. While there are any number of very talented photographers here, you bring a unique and (in my opinion) more “artistic” style than most, and it seems like you work with each model’s own attributes and personalities to create very different, but always high quality results. For example, Ansley’s Writing Desk , Malloreigh’s Sauced, and Nikoll’s brilliant To Please [one of the best ever] are all very different from one another, but each are fantastic in their own right. In all honesty, the photo sets aren’t a huge priority for me here, but the ones that catch my eye - - and that I take the time to look at and vote on - - are the ones where the photography stands out more than the model, and all of your sets stand out.
All that said, you have to make the decision that’s best for you, and if you do decide to pursue your talents elsewhere, please know that you will be missed. Best of luck in whatever direction you may travel.

I think you do amazing work. I loved Rydell's Reflections set, it is one of my favorites.

The competition here is certainly tough. There are so many women who want to be on SG. Since they are only posting 1 set per day now it is even tougher to get something purchased. I hope you reconsider, it would be a real loss to SG if you left.

Have you considered moving to a more "SG-rich" environment? Is that even a possibility?

Aw, I'm so sorry you feel that way. I'm sad to think that you feel like you're competing with me, I hope I haven't done anything to exacerbate that! I've been super lucky with sets this month but it definitely comes and goes. I don't think anyone on the outside of being an SG photographer can truly understand how there can be such frustrations with having our favourite sets remain unaccepted. I've definitely been there and just before the new year I was in exactly this situation where I felt like maybe it was my time to move on. It's extra hard when other photographer get sets bought over your own, it happens to me too. Of course whenever I shoot sets I remember why I love it which keeps me going.
