Oh my god the weirdest shit happens to my dad. He called me on Skype last night because he just got back to Phoenix from a car show in Texas. He drove the 1969 Firebird he fixed up down there to compete. He had to show me the trophy he won for best stock car. He was all excited. I love seeing that it's still possible to have that kind of childlike excitement at 60.

Then he says to guess what else he did in Texas. I say "I don't know, you got really bad Mexican food and got food poisoning?" He says "Nope, I ran over a drunk guy." I got a little freaked out. Clearly my dad hadn't been arrested since he made it home. He said he and his friend were driving the Firebird home and they'd been on the road for around 12 hours. They were on a frontage road next to a freeway. Apparently the guy jumped out in front of the car so my dad slammed on the brakes and swerved to try to miss him and the guy jumped back in front of the car. My dad ended up hitting him going between 35-40mph. The guy went up onto the hood, hit the windshield, then kind of rolled along the side of the car before hitting the ground. Of course my dad stopped to see if he was ok. Before they could get to the guy he got up and acted really disoriented, then as my dad and his friend approached him he took off run/limping toward the freeway. At that point my dad called 911 because he didn't like where this was going, and duh, he just ran someone over. The guy ran down an embankment, onto the freeway, across both directions of traffic, and into some trees on the other side. As far as my dad knows the police never found him. He wasn't sure if the guy was drunk, high, or suicidal. Apparently the only damage to the car was the guy managed to take off the radio antenna on his way over the car. Obviously my dad and his friend are fine. People are fucking crazy.
