WHY ARE PEOPLE WITH TATTOOS, PIERCINGS, OR ALTERNATIVE STYLES DISCRIMINATED FOR WHAT THEY DO BY BIG CORPORATIONS?
Just to give you a little background of why I’m asking the question: I’ve been a hard worker since I was 13 years old. I started to help my mom at Michaels (an arts and crafts store) by just assisting her in her floral designs and then I started to make homecoming mums for local high schools. Since then, I have always been doing something, from helping my parents at work, to even non-paid charity events for a church I went through. So tell me, what has changed other than me having 7 years of experience underneath my belt? Well, I’ll tell you what HAS changed drastically, my physical appearance.

I will be honest, before my first set for SG came out, I lost my job.. I worked at Freebirds World Burrito. I loved that job, but I fired to a secret shopper…. Who I believed wrongly accused me, yet I digress the point is, I was dead broke. So, I started frantically looking for a job. I applied from fast food to fancy restaurants in Uptown to regular retail jobs. I had several interviews, but at most I went to, ESPECIALLY restaurants, all said I must cover all tattoos and hide all piercings. I wasn’t looking in the right places; I know this now because I do have a good job.

Here’s where the rant begins:
Am I an American citizen? Do I have 7 years of work, customer service, and even bigger responsibilities like assistant manager? Am I a college student? For the most part, Am I a law abiding citizen?
All these questions are answered with a huge YES.
Now, riddle me this…
If an illegal immigrant can get a job, can’t I?
If a felon can get a job, can’t I?
If someone is in a wheelchair and can get a job, can’t I?
If someone who is white, black, purple, or from any decent can get a job, can’t I?

What did I do wrong? Where did I go wrong? I DID ABSOLUTLEY FUCKING NOTHING WRONG.
One of my favorite sayings, “Don’t judge me for having a tattoo because I don’t judge you for not having one.” You tell me, why do you think they didn’t hire me? Because I got fired from ONE job prior, or because of the way I look? You give me your opinion and answer the question I asked first freely. I want to know everyone’s outlook.

Xoxoxo Kentessa Cannabis

P.S. Why am I weird or different? Well, I love that I’m both of those, that I can embrace it, that my family can embrace it. And I think WHY I’m different from everyone else is because I am not afraid to show EVERYTHING about me, if it’s good or bad. Because I learn from the bad and it makes me a stronger person for it. My ink, shows who I am, and I’m not afraid to tell you the story behind every piece I have. The piercings? I like pain, Think I’m weird? Well, I could say the same for you not having them, but I’m a very open minded person, even to conservative republicans. SO WHY SHOULD I BE TREATED ANY DIFFERENTLY? I’m not Christian, but whatever happened to the Golden Rule? Think about it…

Your questions are all valid. Still, businesses looking to hire individuals are going to be prejudicial and will always make judgements based on appearance, whether they are legally allowed to do so or not. I have hired people with safety pins through their cheeks over people who looked like they stepped out of a J. Crew catalog, always based on ability to perform, and while I am in construction at least 50% of my work is in direct customer service. For me it is far easier to explain some ink or plugs in someone'e earlobes than it is to explain marginal performance, which in my trade is flatly unacceptable. There are employers like me and there are plenty who don't roll that way. You've just got to sort it out. When you become an employer yourself (and I expect that you will) remember this feeling of injustice and unfairness as you review potential hires.

thank you for all that input Mattacme! I agree completely with you, if there were more bosses like you and I though, the world would be amazingly different. Full of creative flow and open mindedness. could you imagine?

The majority always discriminate against the minority. I've seen this all over the world. Sucks, but its never going to change. We're the last ppl on the planet they think its still ok to discriminate against, so they do. So you know what i did? I said fuck you bitches and started my own business. And till the day i die, i intend to bust my ass proving every single one of them wrong. Success = Best revenge ever.

Definitely all in for that Richard. Yet, even for shitty jobs, i still need them to pay for college, thats why i'm trying to do more modeling. But I do plan on being a business owner, and writing a moth fuckin book about why we shouldn't discriminate.

Right on. But whats a moth book? surreal I feel you though.. took forever for me to get to this point. And i'm sad to confess that it was this type of discrimination that got my ass in gear to make it happen. I was a Counselor at Juvenile Hall for 10 years and everybody loved me. Until my tattoos started becoming visible that is. Within 3 months of them starting to complain about my "appearance" they had adopted a "no visible tattoos allowed policy". Forcing myself and a handful of others to either cover them up (which is impossible for me at this point) or be fired. So i said fuck you, cashed out n quit. Now i work harder than i ever have before, but i flippin LOVE it! And, i do what i want. But yeah, gotta play the game till that day arrives.. but when it does biggrin.

Business has an ideal image they want to portray to the public, this image is I guess one passed down from the management, people who grew up when tattoos were a sign of negative things. I think you'll find that as tattoos become more mainstream and younger people reach management postions this will change. Here in New Zealand the police even had to allow visible tattoos because it was seen as discrimination if they didn't. The stigma of head and neck tattoos is still strong but arms and legs are more acceptable, I think because we have a strong Polynesian influence here and these tattoos are more traditional they become more accepted which has a flow on effect for all tattoos.

The problem is that you have grown up in a culture and a time when tattoing is accepted. The people running these corporations (and it isn't just corporations) are typically run by people from a generation older than yours. That generation sees tattoos as being associated with a bad element of society. When I was young, it was long hair on men, not tattoos that was seen as bad. When you are older, the youth will do something that will be seen as terrible (something like, I don't know, hanging their pants halfway down their asses). Your generation sees tattoos as an expression of who you are--and that is great--but not everyone sees it that way. By marking your body you invite that critisizm--waranted or not. It's not fair, but it does exist. As your generation gets more and more into the workforce, the descrimination will be lessened.

I meant motha fuckin book lol. stupid auto correct. Anyways, I enjoyed everyone's input! And definitely enjoyed reading your experiences about it. The thing about New Zealand Police, it should apply with our police officers, because some of them have tattoos! Talk about law-abiding citizen! And you all made me see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is true, tattoos are getting more mainstream, so i should probably be a little patient, yet I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing, because you can't make anyone happy unless your happy wink
