Are you into video games? Can you explain the fascination to me?

I've got questions.

1. Do you play video games? (If not, why not?)
2. What are your favorite kinds of games?
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question).
4. I know there are a lot of video game based movies (comics too) and I'm wondering how video game lovers find this? Do you go see the film interpretation of a video game you like? Do some video games have such specific stories that it is weird to see a movie stray from it? Do you imagine your characters to be a certain way (I know you have a visual of them) so that casting can make you crazy?
5. Do any of the video game based movies just take the characters and do a whole plot unrelated to the game?

(I do not play video games, as you can probably tell. I barely know how. I have, however, played Tony Hawk and Mario Tennis, and all the games at the arcades, but I'm just a spazz and I press all the buttons frantically and hope for the best).

Why this blog came about, not in any particular order:

1. I overheard two kids arguing about videogames so ferociously the other day, that I was rather shocked. "Wow," I thought. "Do people really get so involved?!" Then I remembered stories of people getting divorced or neglecting their children because of Legend of Zelda... Or whatever that's called...

2. I had been reading the Walking Dead comics awhile back. I haven't looked at one in about a year, admittedly. I'm curious about this. (I understand this is not a movie... and it's not a videogame)... Have you seen it? What do you think?

3. I was just reading the online version of the Montreal Mirror, and there's an article about Assassin's Creed. Ads for this game have completely taken over the world-- they're on TV every 10 seconds and in the metro stations too. I don't know about the video game, but I suspect the comic is awesome. I'm going to read it, you should too.

4. Frank Miller's graphic novel, Sin City, is a movie (duh). I used to have the whole series, but somehow just have #6 now (Booze, Broads, & Bullets-- one of my favorite titles). I liked the cinematic interpretation of this enough to watch it 3 times in the theater (I was working at an Indie Theater- it was free!) and I own it, too. I was looking at the print version last night, trying to avoid homework (I also looked at porn, read vampire erotica, started writing an absurd story about the astral plane, and texted until my thumbs hurt). I like this because it felt like a comic brought to life, not like Hollywood nonsense.

5. For some reason though, all this lead me to thinking about X-Men (and a little about The Dark Knight, which is obviously NOT X-Men. I had 2 major - idiotic - issues with that movie. 1: Christian Bale's face looked really uncomfortable when wearing the Batman mask, and I'm convinced he couldn't move his mouth properly. 2: Maggie Gyllenhaal in an ill-fitting dress at Harvey Dent's disastrous fundraiser)... wait, what am I talking about now...

I can't remember what I wanted to say about X-Men! And none of this has to do with videogames anymore. Blogfail!!!!!!!! Fuck! I wanted to say something about the movie versions of X-Men and I'm drawing a total fucking blank.

Anyway, whatever. Let's talk X-Men, general.

I was obsessed with X-Men as a kid. My dog is named Gambit blush I dressed up as Jubilee for Mardi Gras (which doesn't make any sense. I didn't really understand what Mardi Gras was, I was like 6, and my parents encouraged ... creativity!), I was Storm for Halloween (I practiced talking how she talked on the TV show for MONTHS.. HAHAHA), and I also was sure I had perfected Rogue's voice. My God. I had allllll the collectible trading cards, the action figures, and I still have a t-shirt from like 1992 (that was huge then, and is still a bit big) that I wear.

When I was 4 or 5 (and I could read EVERYTHING at this age), I fell down a hill and shredded my knee to bits. Gravel stuck in it, blood everywhere. My mom gave me a rag to bite, and the Phoenix Saga to distract me while she POURED BURNING LIQUIDDDDDDD (let's go with alcohol or iodine or something) into my big cut. Hahah.

SO! Tell me about video games.

And don't forget to give some love to Daughter of Neptune (please). You can also follow me on twitter, but I'm pretty boring, or check out my useless facebook page

I used to play videogames. But frankly I just don't get into that since some times now. Total waste of time. I prefer to play the guitar; that is creative.

I have a PS3, but it’s used far more for Netflix™ instant downloads than for games, and we only have four or so games. I like to play video games with the kid, but they have to be more the tween-age girl type games [hello Little Big Planet love] than the Call of Duty type military stuff, or racing, shooting, or sports games which I would play but . . .
The problem is that games today are so freaking complex and massive. It takes days for the junkies to complete a title, weeks or months for ordinary gamers (and I’ve never finished a modern game - I just can’t get that invested into something like this.) Therefore, Spawn and I often just load up Soul Caliber IV and beat the virtual snot out of each other.

Oh, and you’re an X-fan, love as if you weren’t already perfect enough? [Although, honestly I gave up on buying comics circa ‘98, but I still read my collection]

I never really got into video games that much. They can be a huge time-suck, and I already expend too much time on Internet, television and movies. I have played some racing games, and probably will again, but I took down my steering wheel awhile back and haven't gotten it out for some time. The only arcade video game I ever really liked was Alpine Ski, but that was a long time ago. I've never had a console since the Atari 2600 way back when. shocked

If I weren't already hopelessly smitten with you, this post would do the trick. smile

You should keep in mind, Montreal is where Assassins Creed is/was developed (Ubi-Soft's headquarters is actually right off Saint-Laurent in the Plateau), so no surprises that the whole city would be plastered in advertisements.

Lots of questions so bear with me and a long response. But there is a lot to talk about with video games.

Personally I love video games and I have the capacity to play them for an entire day straight. I think a good analogy for how people can get into a video game is to look at bookworms. Many bookworms and gamers get into their obsessions because it allows an escape for the world. It is also a creative and pleasurable thing to do. Video games allow me to take over a hero and actually live the adventure. In my view better than reading because I have more control over the story and character. Video games do bring a great challenge for those that want it. I love a game that forces me to learn, solve puzzles, react faster, and improve myself as I play them. My favorite Legend of Zelda series is known for puzzle solving, open and vast worlds to explore, and large epic bosses to fight.

My favorite video games are called RPGs, which stands for Role-Playing Games. Often gives the playable character(s) that become stronger as you progress through a storyline. Legend of Zelda games pretty much have the same story; "The hero of legend (Link) must rescue the Princess (Zelda) from an evil wizard." It is a fairytale that I can play through. But other kinds of games include racing, sports, strategy, and pure puzzle games just to name a few. And recently "Non-Games" have been becoming more popular. "Non-Games" include an exercise video game program and Farmville (which is the most popular Facebook game). They can't be won but serve other purposes such as time wasting.

I could list maybe 50-80 games worth playing so I'll just suggest you look at my profile where I list my top 10 favorite video games if you want a list of good ones to learn about.

There are people that take video games incredibly serious. In fact there are some people that make a living being competitive video game players! In South Korea the national sport there is a video game called Star Craft. They in fact have a channel where all they show is people playing the video game. But like with everything, the video game player community has every kind of person in it, some are jerks, some hate video games, some will argue over whether a tactic is considered cheating or not.

As for video game movies... well there haven't been many good ones. In fact they mostly tend to be absolute garbage. When Super Mario Bros. (if you like laughing at corny movies) and Prince of Persia (if you don't mind turning your brain off to watch cool special effects and hot sexy actors) rest at the top end of video game movie adaptations; you can only imagine how bad the lower end is, Bloodrayne, House of the Dead, Doom, etc.

I'm all for a movie adaptation but I just wish they could finally make a good one. I don't mind if they change the story some or characters if the overall movie looked at objectively in cinema is good. If they have to take Legend of Zelda and make Link a Giraffe that spits rainbows but it turns out the movie is actually good I'll be content. Although I don't like it when they take a movie idea and throw in a video game character just to appeal to the market of gamers so that people will see it. It has been done and truly shows no respect for the origins of the idea.

The only games I enjoy these days are ones which can be played quickly and sporadically without major time investment. I used to love immersive games, but who has the time? Between work and hobbies and travel etc., I don't have the hours necessary to blow on games. They can be amazing fun, but I'm too busy.

1. Yeah I'm a gamer and I'm proud of it!
2. I guess my favorite kind would be old 2d fighting games, but I also like puzzle games, RPGs and first person shooters.
3. Fallout new Vegas, for the overall awesomeness of the story and the post-apocaliptic mood. Katamari, because it's the best game to play while high.
4. It really depends. for old games like Mortal Kombat I think it was appropriate to do a movie. And the story actually made sense with the original, I think it was great. But most game based movies like Hitman and Bloodrayne are useless box-office failures.
5. The first one that comes to mind is Super Mario Bros... Also, Street Fighter the movie was a real piece of shit that didn't make any sense with the real story.

it's the small rewards we get through playing (achievements, missions, bonuses, 100%'s, etc), that like any drug or positive reaction, keeps us going for more. That's why falling just short of a goal, will result in endlessly playing it until we reach perfection.
