I learned a few really important things from my mother.
1. You can drink (almost) endless vodka with seltzer (soda) and not be hungover.
2. Eating pasta is acceptable at any hour of the day.
3. "Wear the black" - don't pretend you want to wear a color. You don't.

Aye, your mother sounds wonderful. A caveat, however, I learned from my father
