i <3 my puppies.

so tonight, i was outside grilling some little steaks and i see one of the neighborhood stray cats has wandered into the yard and is eyeing the grill. so i ran inside to grab a cat carrier and some bait, took it back out and set a trap. i -almost- nabbed her: she was 3/4 in the crate when i tried to shut the door, but her leg got caught and i didn't want to hurt her so i let her back out. she ran off, but only so far as the fence at the side of my yard. by this point, i realized my little steaks were probably burning, so i took them off the grill and put them on the porch while i ran inside for more cat food. i came back outside just in time to see her running off with a steak in her mouth.

i have named her la bandita de carne.

if she ever comes back, which she probably will (who -wouldn't- come back to the place that gave you a fucking free steak?), i'll try to set up a little bit better of a trap and see if i can catch her. at the very least, i can get her spayed before releasing her back; but she seemed fairly friendly for a feral (and pretty young) so she might be able to transition to a house cat if given the chance. at least she's well-fed for tonight...

i just got an antique console record player in complete working condition - FOR FREE. (it was sitting outside of my favorite thrift store in the world, and apparently they don't even try to sell them anymore there since nobody ever buys them, so they just throw them away. wtf.)

we have spent the past three hours or so admiring it, cleaning it, and of course, playing records. which it does. beautifully.

i put a female torso on a stick on it for good measure. (ignore teacake's chair and toys next to it. concentrate on the swank.)

after 22 long years of life, the last five of which spent living on my own, i have finally discovered cooking. in the past week or so, i roasted a whole chicken, made chicken soup from the carcass and leftovers, made a potroast, and bought a grill and made my own cheeseburgers and hotdogs. i'm pretty damn proud of me - it's healthier and cheaper ('cept for the actual grill, but it'll pay for itself in time) and damnit just tastes better. why didn't anyone tell me??

being moderately poor can be kinda fun if it's done correctly. it makes me learn stuff. hm.

anyone got any recipes for tasty, relatively inexpensive meals?

w00t!! i got a scholarship! it's this thing called the peachtree award, which is given to three students in the crafts department (not limited to metals students) a year and is based on merit, not financial need. i am incredibly excited and happy - it's my first scholarship based on my skills as a craftsperson. i feel totally validated right now. AND i can buy a bunch of silver and some assorted small tools. drool. i'm so fucking happy right now.

dance party, anyone?

i am so happily content right now. these last couple of days have been absolutely gorgeous. sunny and warm. perfect for dog park visits, scooter rides and metal working. right now, at two in the morning, i've got the bedroom window open and the ceiling fan on low. it is exactly the correct combination of cool, circulating fresh air and warmth leftover from the day. it smells like bartlett pears and mangoes, from the two candles we have lit in this room. the overhead lights are off, so there is only the flickering glow of candles and computer screens. music (she wants revenge) is playing, softly. there is a tiny dog curled up in a ball, asleep on my lap. a bigger tiny dog sleeps on the bed. my fluffy cat is playing in the water dish, my retarded cat is staring at the fan with a look of perplexity on her face. the stars are out. it is quiet outside. i am clean and sweet-smelling, in comfy jammies with damp hair. my girl is beautiful. i am happy.
