Today, while I was on my lunchbreak, a "large black man" walked into the office and walked out with my laptop. My boss is uninsured.

I fucking hate people. What recourse do I have?

actually you can sue your boss for being insured and he can end up paying huge fines for not having it either. there are ways to get your shit back even if they don't find it biggrin

Repeatidly kick your boss in the testicles until he replaces it?
Perhaps another "large black man" can be arranged to come convince him to buy you a new one?

I'm guessing your boss did not offer to replace it? If not, you might want to ask him to. If you use the laptop for work and you were on the clock at his business, he is responsible for your computer, ins or not.
It's a shitty situation to be in, something similar happened to me a few years back and my boss was a fuckin' asshole. She basically told me to replace my gear that was damaged myself. I had to take her to small claims court, it was a fuckin' nightmare.
I'm really sorry.

I don't like 'em either. I've just receded into the confines of my room. . . permanently.

If you have renters or homeowners insurance, your policy has a provision in it that covers theft of items off your home premises. Usually this coverage is limited to 10% of your total renter's insurance limit. So even a low $20k policy (usually $130 a year) would cover a loss of $2k.

Unfortunately, unless your employer promised a secure space for your personal belongings and you weren't using the laptop for work, you're fucked.

You can call the police, check the local swap meets and pawn shops, and post signs offering a "no questions asked" reward. If you have your own renters or personal property insurance, you can make them pay for it. Hopefully you have the serial number somewhere.

You need to file a police report, and then if you have any perdonal info on the computer [like passwords to credit card or online bank accounts] you need to contact those agencies to put holds on the accounts.

You boss needs to not only to replace the coputer, but also explain how someone could walk into his place of buisness and fleece him. Dont they have locks on the doors? Are they in a building where they rent space-if so what sort of provisions does the landlord have?

Regardless the boss can replace the computer and claim the money as a buinsess loss on both state and federal taxes. There is no was the boss is not liable for replacing it if it was their office and they did not have to the facility to protect the contents of said office.

Also the whole "large black man" raises a lot of red flags. Id call the police asap and have your boss swear out a theft report and anyone else in the office who saw the actor taking your property. People will be a whole lot more accurate when there swearing out something that could back a prejury if they are falsifying the report.
