Hey guys!

I just signed the petition "Include Body Modification in Equal Opportunity Employment" and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.

Our goal is to reach 1,000,000 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here:

http://www.change.org/petitions/include-body-modification-in-equal-opportunity-employment

Even if it doesn't work it's a damn good thing to support!

Xoxoxo

while I'm a huge fan of personal liberty,
and ink (which may be obvious, as I'm rather heavily tattooed myself),
I seriously doubt "body modification" is going to fall within the "protected class" definition(s) promulgated by the Supreme Court for Equal Protection analysis (e.g an "immutable characteristic determined solely by the accident of birth").

I'm certainly not against the petition, and if this type of anti-discrimination law gets passed, that's great. However, I'm not sure this is the type of legislation society needs. The bottom line here, is that choices, including the choice to modify, carry responsibilities. If you choose to do something that society doesn't wholly embrace [at least not yet], it's not "discrimination" if you're judged according to said choice. As I like to say, tattoos and all body modification, are a valid and vital forms of artistic expression, and free expression, and speech. However it's equally valid to judge somebody upon the content of their speech. Society will - - or will not - - accept certain modification(s) as "mainstream" on its own [and I sort of hope that doesn't happen] but, again, I'm not sure we need legislation dictating this movement.

While it certainly sucks that having dreadlocks means I'll never be able to get hired for pretty much any job, I don't think I think it needs to be legislated.

Really, it should be common sense that someone's body modifications won't effect how they do a job. So this petition can only do good in raising awareness. But most people have something about themselves they can be persecuted for... so I kind of wish no one had (or needed) laws to make sure they get treated fairly.

A potential employer should judge on merit, not on modification. Bias has enough excuses.
