Last night I attended the Amsterdam screening of Larry Wessel's Iconoclast, a 4-hour documentary about avante garde noise artist Boyd Rice. I became familiar with Rice through his affiliation with Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan, his collaborations with Death in June, and his impossibly misanthropic book NO (Heartworm Press). What I didn't know, was that Rice has done some pretty amazing work over the years since the mid-1970's, ranging from producing a handful of 'playable at any speed' records (complete with off-centered holes drilled in the middle) under his NON-moniker to his Rorschach-like paintings and ear-splitting live performances flirting with fascist aesthetics. I was also pleasantly surprised by his sense of humor, which many people of his caliber seem to lack. Anyway, my point is that if you're anywhere near one of the rather obscure screenings of this film and are interested in experimental music, satanism, Charles Manson, and Dadaism, this one's for you.

On a more personal note, Albertine and I have something coming up soon that we're both quite pleased with. Stay tuned.

This evening I went to the pre-premier of the Italian film Habemus Papam (English title: We Have a Pope), which is about a cardinal who is elected to be the pope but doesn't really want to be the pope. I really liked it. It was sad at times but there was a lot of humor as well (fully robed senior citizens playing a volleyball tournament at the Vatican...!!) Religion has always fascinated me and the Vatican especially has always had quite an air of mystique around it, so the concept of this movie intrigues me even if it's pure fantasy and speculation. Apparently the real Vatican isn't too happy about this movie, but that was to be expected. Anyway, this probably won't be out in a while in the U.S. (if at all) but I highly recommend seeing it if you're interested in this kinda thing.

In case you're wondering, there are lots of things happening in my universe. I'm working a few days a week in a vintage/2nd hand clothing store which is really fun (getting paid to shop, what girl wouldn't like that?), I start my Hermeticism classes at university in little over a week, and I'm going back to Italy in about a month to see my love and catch a couple of Sunn O))) shows. I don't know how much longer I'll be around here but I do have at least one more set that Albertine and I shot in Milan back in June that hopefully we will be able to unveil shortly. Until then, see you when I see you.
