Brooklyn Don't go searching for a mermaid if you can't swim...

I’m private

So...as of last week, I am a full fledged attorney -- with a license to practice in New York. It still hasn't quite sunk in yet. So who needs a divorce? biggrin

I read an exceedingly sexy story recently. Written by williamnot, "somebody got a new toy". Very, very hot. Go check it out.

I am so happy I could help Succor turn pink. She is just a lovely bundle of sexy fun.

The bulbs in my garden box are slowly starting to come up. With all this beautiful weather I am impatient for them to be all bright and colorful. I have major Green Thumb Itch going on...the new gardening gloves I got for Christmas are teasing me...I want to plant my summer veggies!

Patience was never one of my strongest virtues...

I saw the 22-20s and Band of Skulls play last week here in Brooklyn.

I have always loved the 22-20s. I never understood why they never got more attention than they did.

I can't remember the last time I went to see a show. My ears were ringing for days afterwards. I felt old. I also noticed how homogenous and bland everyone looks these days. I feel like people used to express more personal style when they went out. I think I was the only person at the venue not wearing a dark pair of skinny jeans and an old tank top. It seriously looked like a uniform. Doesn't anyone have a personal sense of style anymore?

I finally renewed my subscription to National Geographic -- by far my favorite magazine. The downside? Reading it makes me want to Go. Just go. Go everywhere.

I think Burma is next on my list of Must See places.

Congrats on the license! Thankfully I do NOT need a divorce, but if anyone I know should happen to ask me if I know any lawyers to help them out with that, I'll keep you in mind. smile

Glad you got out to see a show! And congrat's on making the lawyer deal fully official!

Unfortunately, virtually all modern venue sound systems are so loud that permanent hearing damage will occur in a fairly short period of time. Younger folks appear to be less affected, but that's an illusion due to the fact that they haven't had as long a period of time for the damage to accumulate. It's a mechanical process - excess exposure over time produces permanent hearing loss. It's not being a wimp to use hearing protection - if you go to a lot of shows, you're risking bad permanent ringing and even possible deafness.

The problem with conventional earplugs is that they muffle music and make for a rotten listening experience. Fortunately, a number of companies have come out with musician's earplugs that have been tuned to eliminate the excess attenuation of higher frequencies that you get with conventional solid earplugs. Here are a bunch of links. These are all pretty similar - I've used the Hearos and Etymotic Research and can attest that they both do a very good job. When I started to notice a little bit of permanent ringing, I got serious about finding out the best solution to protect my hearing and still enjoy the music. smile

Caveat: In extreme situations it's possible for the volume to be so high that you can get damage even with these earplugs. If you're feeling discomfort from the volume with any of these plugs in, you'll need to switch to higher attenuation plugs (it's smart to always keep a pair handy - they don't take up much room). Luckily, most clubs don't crank the volume up to that sort of level.

Extreme Noise Earplugs:

Everything above is moderately priced, from about $10 - $20 per pair. It's possible to get custom-fitted earplugs for a lot more money ($100 - $200) - they're probably a little more comfortable, but I haven't seen any data to suggest they provide much benefit in terms of additional music fidelity.

Didn't start out for this to be such a long reply, but it is an important subject. I think I'll post it on my blog as well.
