Soooo, let's see... I spent Christmas in Marocco. With my mom. Jesus, the last time I had travelled with her was when I was 12, so it was bound to be quite an experience. And, oh my god, it was.
First of all, Casablanca is incredible. When I got there I immediately hated it. Like, ha-ted it. People on the intranets would ask "So, hey, are you enjoying Casa?" and I would simply reply "It's... interesting. I'd never been in a 3rd world country before, you know?". But as I took a walk through the city when night began to fall, something about the place hit me - I was at this smaller, cheesier and definitely rougher Paris. In Africa. In fuckin' Africa. (which reminds me - when I was about to enter the plane to fly to Marocco it hit me and I simply texted my best friend with "Dude... I'm heading to Africa.") So I had no choice but to embrace the place and enjoy it. Marrakech is quite different... it's just too touristic for me. It gets boring after ONE WHOLE HOUR.
There was actually no Christmas what-so-ever. Which was fantastic! I hate the dull family reunions and dinners, giving presents and receiving something just because a stupid date says so. On the 24th I was in my hotel room, in bed, ordering some sandwiches through room services, while working on some stuff on my laptop and watching french cartoons. BEST CHRISTMAS EVER.
On another note, I can't seem to get enough of Bat For Lashes' latest album <3
Oh, Afrique du Nord! Okay, you want N. Africa color and crazy? Try reading Paul Bowles, especially The Sheltering Sky (note: the Bertolucci movie version was rubbish except for Bowles' cameo), and -- if you're half the nerd I think you are -- Michelle Green's life-is-stranger-than-fiction book, The Dream at the End of the World: Paul Bowles and the Literary Renegades in Tangier. Seriously, Dream is one of the most memorable books I've ever read. Blew. My. Mind. The place was as cosmic vortex for the weird and wonderful, a petri dish for the beats enriched by senior statesman of letters, Bowles, who bridged the lost generation and the Age of Aqarius. There's only one book higher in my pantheon of literary biography.
P.S: In going to Amazon to find URLs for you, I inadvertently ordered eight more books, including the cheapest Green used copies. I'll send you one if you'd like.
