I have finally finished reading the last available book of ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ series. It took me months, mostly because the books are complex and confusing at times. Also, thanks to George R. R. Martin taking his sweet time with writing the next one, I tried to make them last longer. The next one will only be available in about 2 years time and I’m already feeling the post-song-of-ice-and-fire depression. Out of all the things that I’m wondering about, the most intriguing one is…

…who is Jon Snow? surreal

So Martin had us believe that the oh-so-honourable Ned Stark has shagged some wet nurse or a Dornish maid and there came little Jon. But did he really? I had a long discussion with a friend on this topic and he has pointed out a few interesting points.
So we know that Robert Baratheon has overthrown Targaryens, but we also know that he was in love with Ned’s sister who didn’t give a flying fuck about him. On the contrary, Ned’s sister Lyanna Stark had a thing for Rhaegar Targaryen and he had a thing for her. Conveniently, he ‘abducted’ her and they’ve spent quite a bit of time together, hidden away.
Now, as Rhaegar was killed by Robert in the battlefield, Ned was trying to save his sister. He found her guarded by the Kingsguard (and the Kingsguard protect only royal blood – Lyanna wasn’t the queen). She was on her deathbed – a bloody deathbed. Ned gives her a mysterious promise just before she dies. A big, important promise that we know nothing about. Also, he comes back home to Winterfell after a few months – with a son. whatever
Robert was the king, he hated Targaryens and he would definitely kill any he could have got his hands on. The baby that was a product of love between his now dead crush and the guy he hated the most and the heir to the Iron Throne, would not stand a chance.
So yes – I’m almost certain that Jon Snow is actually half Targaryen and the rightful king. I believe that Ned has promised his sister that he will keep Jon safe and the only way to do that was to claim him as his own. Honourable as he was, he has taken that burden, shamed himself in front of his wife and thus kept the boy alive.
So write faster Mr. George R. R. Martin – I want to scream ‘I knew it’ and dance a little happy dance when Jon eventually rides a dragon next to Daenerys and kicks some White Walkers ass! biggrin

I should just finish the damn book, I have like 10 books waiting to be read, just really really love that series. tongue
With regards to your theory, I thought exactly the same thing. And now we wait to see...

Just finished recently as well. I like that everyone comes away with different questions from these books. Also,

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
too bad Jon's dead and we'll never know the answer, right? winkwinkwink

My big question is: what the hell is going to happen with Bran?

I just caught up on those same books myself a couple months back. In the time sense then, with that same momentum, I've plowed through a few novels of The Dresden Files and am now in the middle of The Name of the Wind. Funny how when you apply the same momentum it takes to get through a 1,000 page tome to other books you race through them.

And I expect you're right about Jon Snow.

I have this theory too! It's pretty cool how people all over the world can spontaneously come up with this on their own, without contact with each other. Goddamn!

You know, he gave the plot to the producers of the TV show in case he dies before he finishes the books, so that we can still find out what happens!!

I'm glad other people spend as much time thinking about these books as I do. I like your theory a lot. That would really bring everything together in a method I hadn't thought of!
