I returned from Leogane, Haiti, late last night. After an In-N-Out Burger to celebrate a late 4th of July, I spent some quality time with my two kitties and called it a night. Today I've been catching up with a month's worth of snail mail, email, and other realities. I'll be posting some pix and stories of my month-long adventure doing humanitarian work in earthquake ravaged Haiti. The trip involved tarantulas, lightning storms, Creole, and lots and lots of rubble. I can't wait to share my experience.

Unfortunately I couldn't post anything while overseas. Our internet connection had limited bandwidth, which was shared by 100+ international volunteers. It was such a bad connection that it'd sometime take literally 30 minutes to load one email using basic HTML. So blogs on SG weren't gonna happen. Facebook mysteriously worked well, which no one could explain, but everything else was as fast as 1997 dial-up.

I also regret not being able to send letters to the generous folks who donated money to my cause. It was my plan to personally thank each person with a letter sent from Haiti. However, Haiti doesn't have much public works like water and sanitation. So as you may figure, postal services don't exist except for FedEx, if one is lucky enough to encounter them.

So in the meantime, please wait patiently for me to reacquaint myself with my default life. More to come soon on my Haitian trip.

Mwah!

Kashing in the karma: A fan of mine bought me a room at the Hollywood Standard this Monday and Tuesday along with a few other presents. It's his way of pampering me before I head off to Haiti. I am so lucky. =-)

Today I have been reminded several times of my ultimate purpose: birthing babies. After all, I have chromosomes, ova, a uterus and vagina, thus I must help the human race by adding to the population, or so says Mother Evolution.

Evidence for this:
A friend sent me an email asking me to repost a link for friends looking to adopt a tiny human. Before I did this I checked out the link and found myself moved to tears at the genuine love the childless couple shared for children. I don't know the couple but I I liked their profile so much I almost wanted to get pregnant just so I could give them my baby.

Next I got stuck at a co-worker's baby shower, which led to everyone, except me, sharing stories about their pregnancies. I wanted to die...must I really explain why I am childless? Why is it ok for parents to hold me hostage at work? And why do they get to say things like, "Well if you haven't had a baby by age X [hey, that's my age!], you may as well give up all hope of a meaningful life."

Later, a suitor hinted he wanted to impregnate me with his spawn. Why do boys like telling me this? Don't infect me with your genetics!

Then I saw pages and pages of baby posts on Facebook. It must be Baby Thursday.

What is the Universe trying to say?

In less than two weeks I board a plane heading to Haiti. I'm rather excited but I've been so distracted with getting things squared away at home that I haven't really gotten a chance to let this all sink into my brain.

I saw my doc and got HepA/B and typhoid fever vaccinations along with a malaria prophylatic. I've got many tubes of sunscreen and Deet. I purchased a mosquito net, a big hiker's backpack, and someone is lending me her air mattress. To play it safe I bought a Jet Boil kit...it was on sale at REI and I couldn't resist. When I was in Peru last year it was an ordeal to boil water for tea, and I need my tea goddammit, so it made sense. There are other things I've picked up like aspirin, cortisone cream, batteries, and a bottle of Bushmill's Whiskey for my friend "Dave the Drunk." Dave has been working for months with the organization I'm joining in Haiti. He hasn't had a drop of the stuff in months--he just may die if I don't get him the bottle soon. He promised me he'll do "anything" if I bring Bushmill's. I'm going to hold him to it.

Anyway, in the meantime I've been raising funds. I've had many generous donations made that total....drum roll please......
$1837!!!!!
The money is going to be put to such great use and help so many Haitians. I cannot believe how big some people's hearts are.

I've been working hard to gather funds for this trip in addition to raising funds for the organization Hands On Disaster Response. My plane ticket, personal supplies, and the month of work I'm losing really add up. To save money I had to get extra creative. So I got a roommate to share my one-bedroom apartment, which sucks but it saves me money. I quit my weekly sushi dinners and I haven't had Starbucks in months--seriously. I stopped going to clubs. I picked up two extra shifts a week at the dungeon and I signed up for a grueling teaching gig that starts literally two days after I return from my trip. I sold something yesterday on Ebay for a few hundred dollars, and I'm going to try to sell my beach cruiser on Craigslist to raise a few more dollars. I'm not sure why I feel so compelled to sacrifice my comfort and worldly possessions for a country I've never visited, but I just do.

Without further ado, here's a link to my fundraising website. Please take a moment to read what I posted there. Perhaps you'll feel just as inspired as I am?

Love me in Haiti by donating to Hands on Disaster Response. It's secure, quick, and simple to do and your donation goes directly to HODR.

I'm going to Haiti on June 6th to help with the relief effort after the January 2010 earthquake. I have found an organization called Hands on Disaster Response who can use me for a month. A friend of mine is already there, and two more will meet up with me after I arrive. A mutual friend will be working with a similar organization. He has invited me to help them with water security being that I have a science background. I plan to do so and to help with fundraising.

I am very excited and scared at the same time. Who knows what lies ahead? I just got off the phone with a dear friend of mine. He's known me for over 6 years, and he was the first to ever photograph me in a modeling context. He told me I'm on my way to something bigger than I ever imagined. He also told me I'll find the love of my life soon. I think he's just overly optimistic.

In case you are wondering how you may help, I will be posting a wish list of things that HODR needs. Stay tuned.

The HIstory Channel called Wednesday. They want to revisit the pilot we discussed last Fall. They don't need me to shoot just yet. I warned them I'll be in Haiti...I think that just made them want to cast me even more.

I applied for a full-time position at the college where I teach. They practically begged me to apply. I finally let in. I turned in my application last Friday. Let's see what happens. I also plan to apply for positions in Dubai and other foreign countries. I am getting rather bored with Hollywood.

Tonight I took a brisk stroll through my neighborhood. My neighborhood includes the Walk of Fame, large theatres, clubs, flashy stores, and hotels. I had a fun walk experiencing my neighbors in the evening. I really enjoy where I live and the people it draws.

I have two weeks left of flight school. I won't get a chance to take the actual exam because I'm running off to Haiti, but there's no rush. It'll happen this year though.

I've been learning French using iTunes podcasts and books. It's been rather fun picking up another language. French is not as straighforward as Spanish, but I'm managing to get the hang of it. French is spoken in Haiti, so I thought it'd be a good idea to learn it.

ZZZZ.....
bye bye

My internet has been down. I am short on time, but I wish to share the most awesome video on planet Earth. Watch it! You'll thank me later.
