I had a dream last night that my friend called me to tell me that were 3 baby woodpeckers on Spottiswoode street, I can't remember if I found them or not but I did either have some kind of vision or found a nest with three big blue eggs with brown speckles. Last week I had another nest dream where I was walking around the streets and kept seeing nests in trees and then I came to a house on the wall of which was mounted flat a huge nest lined with feathers and lichens. It was so big I'm sure I could have slept in it. Maybe that's what I'm looking for!

zoom image
Here is one I saw the other day, it's nice that all the nests are so visible in winter as the trees are bare but sometimes it feels that that may be one of the only nice things about winter. Never mind, in a few weeks everything will be filled with life again but of course winter is beautiful and necessary, it just makes me feel tired and run down.

Since I finished The Waves and To The Lighthouse I started reading the Vintage publication of Selected Letters by Virginia Woolf. I feel that same lovely deep involved feeling that I had while reading Katherine Mansfield's Journal and Larkin's Letters to Monica. I read something so delightful and funny in her letters from her early twenties. When writing to Violet Dickinson, Virginia would often call herself "Sparroy". She seemed to have a complicated system of animals names for her family and intimate friends. "Sparroy" was apparently a fantastical small animal of her own invention, half-bird half-monkey perhaps and capable of snuggling (!) Violet was 20 years older than Virginia and was means to have been very sympathetic and warm and believed that Virginia would one day be a great writer. The relationship was also flirtatious and romantic and occassionaly passionate, at least on Virginia's side.

Your letters come like balm on the heart. I really think I must do what I never have done--try to keep them. I've never kept a single letter all my life--but this romantic friendship ought to be preserved. Very few people have any feelings to express-at least of affection of sympathy--and if those that do feel dont express-the worlds so much more like a burnt out moon--cold living for the Sparroys and Violets.

I also had a little debate with my friend on the subject of reading the private letters of deceased people. He seemed to be greatly opposed to it and saw it as a great intrusion and almost a cruelty to publish these personal documents whereas I have always found it quite natural and never really felt like I was doing something against someones will. Maybe as I am so involved in fiction, I cant see the reality of it and it just feels like another book to me. Many published journals and letters were never intended to be read, some people spend their lives making sure what they write will be publishable. I'm sure there are things I have written which I would never want anyone to read but maybe one should try to let go of these precious feelings about what one leaves behind, whether it be the object of the human body after death or the letters or diaries we might have written. I do believe there is a case for sensitivity if for example, there are other people still alive who may be hurt or deeply offended by certain things being published but if the timing is appropriate and sensitive then I think that if the result of one persons private letters being published is that hundreds or thousands of perhaps (even just one) are able to learn and be enlightened and given joy then it is a benefit that this happened. I did feel slightly strange after this conversation when I then read Virginia Woolfs last letter which was to her husband Leonard and the last lines reading You will destroy all my papers. Maybe I don't really know what is right or wrong after all. That's my usual conclusion for all things...

Oh I wanted to give a sneak-peak of a new set Cherry shot for me when we were first reunited after four years. I don't want to give away too much on what it is about just yet but maybe you can guess....

I understand the moral dilemma of reading other peoples letters, but since they're deceased I don't see any great problem, specially if they can inspire others, although I totally get that when we're always reading fiction, is difficult to suddenly realize those are not... I love books!!!

Can't wait for your new set, of course it'll be a winner kiss

I will definitely be ordering, yet I'm afraid not until Thursday or Friday. The one with your hand on your chin and the one with the pesky(?) white line. (1 and 4?).

And as always, I enjoy all your posts, they make the world seem such a nicer place. And of course I'll be looking forward to the new set.

i love the winter, long dark skies , good planet viewing and crisp air. True, the cold , clouds , rain and snow arent so good but i usually feel very grounded in the summer when glimpses of the cosmos are few.
I cant imagine anyone minding their letters read when they are gone, just final whispers of their thoughts trailing out behind them...

I would say while these letters were not produced for public consumption, they do have value yet. They provide a model - an example of what is possible - what is perhaps shared thought ? If we link like minded people - - what difference distance or time ? I say they are written for you - private encouragement between like minded, like hearted spirits. I say if they provide nourishment to you - bless the whole exchange. They may reach out into the dark and uncertain future to one so beautiful - she dreams of birds and their nests.

beautiful nest surprises for you always !

I'm buying prints very soon!!!

And while I sort of agree that reading private letters is certainly an invasion of some sort of privacy, I've always done it. Oscar Wilde's letters are some of the most beautiful things I've ever read.

That last image, with all four pictures, WITH the white line. Is there anyway of getting that on a 8x8 square print? I think it looks really good.

The tradition of publishing letters of note stretches back centuries, so any published author would be aware - even dimly - of the possibly implications of retaining correspondance. I'd hope that the ethical considerations of publishing letters were dealt with respectfully by the estates charged with managing a literary legacy. I would rather the letters were published in a considered way, than scattered at (as an example) random auctions, especially given the beautiful heights they can reach. I keep the letters sent to me because they're precious, and the intimacy can offer comfort. I think the insight we get into an author's thoughts can also be an invaluable tool for contextualising their body of work. My only issue with letters of note is that nothing I write to anyone I know will ever be as beautiful. On second thoughts, burn it all!

Speaking about woodpeckers... since 2 weeks there's one very active in the little forest behind the houses. Every morning you hear some *dak*dak*dak*dak*dak*dak*dak against the wood smile And nests.. they're all around too!

I've even read that birds are confused with the extremely soft weather right now, and even start nesting again? Crazy... my dad told me this weekend that that's quite unthinkable because it should have something to do with the length of the days / daylight / ... these kind of things smile But anyway... In the field nearby daisies are also popping out of the grass. And when I bicycle to the railway station every morning, you hear birds bringing their best serenades... I do like it, but it's kind of a spring-feeling smile

Maybe there is no right or wrong in reading dead people's letters? Unless you do so with bad intentions, but that would be a difficult thing since the person itself wouldn't be around anymore. The law of karma!

Virginia Woolf... I think my girlfriend has some books of her in the other room here. She studied english literature a few years ago and was (and is) quite fond of Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, etc... smile

Anyway, gonna have a peak outside if the skies are clearing out. They predict some possible aurora borealis, even in these regions; but it seems to be quite rainy and cloudy outside.

Take care & enjoy the smell and touch of all your paper and ink!

It's a dilemma. On the one hand, I'd hate to have my behind-the-scenes writing on display. That's not what it's for, and I'd hate for people to get the impression that I don't know how to use apostrophes (which they would if they saw my notebooks and casual correspondence).

On the other hand, I have a copy of Herge's final, unfinished Tintin story, which is a mix of detailed pencil work and rough sketches and half-finished notes to himself. And it's fascinating, and I'm so glad it was made available. But would he appreciate it, if he knew? I wonder.
