every since donnie darko i have found rabbits to be scary. plus in the movie cabin fever there is a quick shot of someone in a creepy rabbit suit. i think it has something to do with the way rabbits just kinda sit around outside looking at you with their creepy eyes while always chewing on something. its like they are always plotting something against you

had there been some scare about them carrying disease that the kid might have overheard/misheard? maybe?

The rabbits that have made me scared, are the afore mentioned Frank from Donnie Darko, and from my childhood, the evil rabbits in Watership Down!!... which is also linked to Donnie Darko... weird, I only just thought of that!??

Have you seen The Brothers Quay black and white animated videos for the 4AD band "His Name Is Alive"?
Both are absolutely amazing, and feature a mischievous rabbit! I'm sure you'd love them, and the music!
