So... why is it that ideologies tend to come in groups? Why do so many of the members of Amnesty International also belong to Greenpeace? And why are then vegetarian/vegan? Why is it that so many people who are pro-welfare are also pro-censorship? Why are those who are pro-choice also for affirmative action so much?

And why is it that secular humanism is so frowned upon? And why does the government think that because I have no religious reason that I cannot object to war all on my own?

And why the hell can't I be proud of my European ancestry? I am a decendant of the inventors of leisure time and democracy, the people who brought about the Renaissance and invented modern medicine... but but then, EVERYONE should be proud of their ancestry.

*sigh* That is all.

Good slew of thoughts, sister. What's got you up in arms and philosophizing? I went to a screening of Gaza Strip last night, a documentary about how fucked up life is for the Palestenians there. Afterwards those who attended the screening talked about it, or whatever it made them think about. Most of them were old white people who felt terribly guilty about the situation there, and got very emotional and said they couldn't imagine how awful that kind of life would be. All of that is true, but ultimately useless. I'm still mulling over the whole scene and what the experience meant to me, but I came out of it annoyed by the people I watched it with. Seemed awfully hypocritical.

i would say that once someone allows a certain viewpoint that they are more willing to see other issues from the same angle. if you are going to look beyond what is taught in school/media about environmentalism and see that we are destroying the earth for dollars, it follows that you would also look beyond school/media and see that keeping children in sweat shops in south eastern asia for dollars isn't right either. and once you look there it isn't a far leap to see that factory farming is bad for the environment.

all of these issues are interconected. that's why there is so much cross over. it's hard to be against animal cruelty and not care about human rights.... i don't know about pro-welfare and pro-cencorship though. i tend to think of welfare as being an issue to the "left" whereas teh "right" wants to cut taxes and stop breakfasts in inner city schools. they seem to be more pro-censorship than the other due to religion.

Thomas Sowell wrote a book to answer that question called 'A Conflict of Visions'. He thinks it all comes down to different views of human nature. If you believe humanity is fucked up and will always be fucked up then your're on one side of any given issue and if you believe that humanity can be improved then you're on the other side.

Conservatives are always trying to make human behavior 1 dimensional for the sake of their arguments, but I think he's on the right track. I just think there's more than 1 fundamental axis. But not too many more.
