My darling 14 (or 14+) yr old blind Dandie Dinmont mix seems to be slowing down. He hates going down stairs, doesn't enjoy his walks so much anymore (which worked out well because I am so not up for long walks with the EDS) and I have to coax him to eat enough now and when he does want to eat a lot he usually vomits (or tries to, I am pretty good at distracting him until the heaving stops) afterwards. Today he even just vomited up water. He has incontinence issues and is so blind he's even walking into people standing still now. He doesn't want to play so much anymore either, but he still loves to cuddle and get treats. I think he has a touch of dementia on top of the blindness and deafness because he is getting lost in our apartment now and paces and paces and paces. My guess is we've got 6 months to a year with him max. I've witness my terriers aging before. We had one who died in his sleep at the ripe old age of 11 blind as a bat and chubby and stinky. But well loved.

I am looking to rescue/adopt a Pitbull or American Staffodrshire Terrier or large, strong (to help me with my stability issues getting up/standing) pit or bully type mix who has service training for working with people with disabilities after Drax passes on. I would love the help sooner but don't want to upset Drax at this stage of his life with a big change. (Drax has gotten defensive about large dogs lately as well.) I'm guessing finding a dog that needs to be re-homed or rescued with this kind of training will be a bit of a thing so let the search begin.

I just had to say goodbye to the pigs a few months back. We had 8 good years together. Wishing Drax the best exit he can have, and all the love he can stand in the meantime.

Drax still knows he's loved. They really never lose their sense of that.

Have you contacted any helper dog organizations already to discuss this with them? If they have some lead time they may be able to work with your particular time table. I've done plenty of work in animal shelters, and have known plenty of pitties who would have been up to the task, but you are right that the likelihood of finding one already trained by happenstance is likely to be pretty slim. In terms of their trained behavior, they're usually at the opposite end of the spectrum from what you'd be looking for--often eager to please, but full of energy, rambunctious, physical, and frequently play-and-prey driven.

Your dog is adorable. I love his face!! The expression in his eyes (ignoring how that is a strange thing to say about a blind dog) says he's had a happy life and still loves living it even if it's hard sometimes. What a cutie. Of course, so is the second dog you posted!

I'm sorry to hear about Drac but I'm sure he has a life full of love. I would think carefully before buying a staffs as they require a higher than normal amount of exercise otherwise they can get quite stressed out. My last flat mate owned one and I used to take it for a run when I got he and then they would take him for a long walk when they got home 2 hours later.

We have a 16-year old poodle. She's nearly blind and deaf, but still has a lot of life in her. I know it's hard to watch our dogs grow older. One of our vets told us she could live to be 22, so we are holding that intention, as long as she has a quality life. Have faith! It's an honor and responsibility to care for an aging pet, I think, and I am grateful for every day.

It's so hard to watch such a great loyal animal go through that. Hope you both enjoy your time with each other without more bumps in the road.

I want a helper monkey. Especially since I'm short and can't climb on things to reach anymore. I've actually started looking into the monkey thing.
