When three teens stage an illegal public suicide, Haggerty suspects their deaths may have been murders. Now his race is on to uncover proof and prevent a nationwide epidemic of copycat suicides. Trouble is, for the first time in history, an entire generation might just decide they’re better off dead.

[THE KILLSWITCH REVIEW – CHAPTER ELEVEN, PART FIVE]

Haggerty, Regina and agent Keenan raced onto the green as the crowd swayed together in time to the music. It was a soft, simple ballad Haggerty could almost appreciate. The viewscreen switched back and forth between Zephyr on guitar and Cherub on bass.

“Are you going to tell us what that little act was about?” Haggerty asked.

“I got an executive order to prevent you from stopping the halftime show,” Keenan told him. “My superiors paid close attention to what you said, weighed the losses against some fucking theoretical benefit, and decided that a few hundred thousand dead teenagers wasn’t too high a price to pay for what they see as social stability. Took them all of twenty seconds. I think they were hoping for it.”

“From how high up does this order come?” Haggerty asked.

“At least as high as the Surgeon General,” Keenan replied.

“This is the United States of America we’re talking about, right?” Regina said acidly.

“So they tell me.” Keenan’s response was just as bitter.

“And you’re disobeying that order for altruistic reasons?”

“Two of them,” Keenan said. “My son and my stepson, twelve and fourteen.”

“Your career may be as dead as mine,” Haggerty said.

“Never mind that now. We’ve got to stop the singer. How’s he going to do it?” Keenan reset his earpiece as they jogged.

“Black button,” Haggerty said.

“We can’t just walk onstage and arrest him because you say he’s going to press.”

“Trust me,” Haggerty said. “I’ll bet my life he’s got his KV unit on him now.”

Keenan halted, grabbing Haggerty by the arm. “He has a registered unit?”

“I got confirmation from BBI just before we spoke earlier,” Haggerty said.

“That’s grounds for suspicion, but pressing a registered unit isn’t a crime, Federal or otherwise.”

“It is if it’s premeditation to incite minors to suicide, and a NewVada ordinance makes it illegal to conduct a suicide for entertainment purposes.”

“You’d better not be making that up,” Keenan said. “And he’d better be in possession.”

The giant monitor showed Zephyr at the microphone gyrating in time to the syncdrums. The blisterbrandings that covered most of his bare upper body made him look like a Rorschach. He closed his eyes, tilted his buzzed head backward, and began to sing in a soulful tenor.

“I don’t believe we’ll Clone Jesus,
I don’t believe in my band,
I don’t believe big brother,
All I trust is the voice in my head,
And the choice, and this Killswitch here in my hand. . . .”

“Sound like grounds for suspicion?” Haggerty asked Keenan.

A row of bull-faced security guards stood shoulder to shoulder across the perimeter of the stage. Keenan flashed his plate to the person in charge. “Federal business; let us through,” he said.

The guard apologized to Keenan: he did not have the authority to give them access.

Keenan pulled his autostun. “Are you sure of that?” he asked mildly.

“Right this way, sir.”

Lake stood near the steps at the side of the stage in black leather, his hair pulled taut off his ancient, ageless face. “I’m so glad you could make it, Mister Haggerty,” he said smugly.

Haggerty resisted the urge to punch him. “This is Federal agent Keenan. We have reason to suspect that Zephyr is planning to press onstage.”

“Even coming from you that’s preposterous,” Lake sneered.

“We’re stopping the performance to search him nonetheless,” Haggerty said. “And everyone else onstage as well.”

“You’ll need a warrant for that,” attorney Ryerson said from behind his boss.

“I can have one in five minutes,” Keenan snarled, clipping his earpiece.

“Don’t bother,” Haggerty said. “I’ve already taken care of it.”

Lake eyed him curiously as Haggerty reached into his pants pocket. He leaned forward to look. Haggerty kneed him in the groin, then pushed the doubled-over Lake into Ryerson’s startled arms.

“I’ll make sure you receive the maximum penalty for assault, Mr. Haggerty!” he shouted.

Haggerty and Keenan were already ascending the crude insta-stairs with Regina close behind. At stage level Haggerty surveyed the enthralled million-plus audience. The screen cut from musician to musician, simultaneously broadcasting to billions of home viewers. He caught a flash of sunlight on metal: dozens of security guards converging from all sides at the foot of the stage, talking over earsets, autostuns at the ready. Who was really running the show?

Keenan looked at him grimly.

“Regina,” Haggerty said, “I need you to stay back in case Zephyr tries to get offstage.”

“Okay,” she said.

Haggerty and Keenan proceeded onto the stage. Seeing Haggerty, Cherub tipped his chin at Zephyr’s guitar. A KV unit was attached to the back, the red light encircling the button lit. The drummer built up to a crescendo; suddenly the shrill notes segued back to the soft ballad.

“I don’t believe we’ll Clone Jesus,
I don’t believe in my band,
I don’t believe big brother,
All I trust is the voice in my head,
And the choice, and this Killswitch here in my hand. . . .”

As Zephyr sang he reached for his unit.

“Stun him!” Haggerty yelled.

Keenan raised the stunner halfway, paralyzed between morality and duty. Haggerty realized the agent would not fire. He threw himself against Keenan, smashing him to the stage and wresting the stunner from him. Half a dozen agents trained their weapons on Haggerty, believing their prisoner had just overpowered a Federal agent.

Zephyr pulled the black box off his guitar and held it aloft. Haggerty raised the stunner, sensing the agents’ tracer points all over him. If he didn’t act now, Zephyr would finish what Max had started.

Haggerty fired.

Pandemonium engulfed the stadium.

The comic book industry has never been afraid to tackle tough and somewhat controversial subjects. They've featured stories of alcoholism, drug abuse, rape, and many other difficult themes that may have seemed somewhat taboo for a world that mostly involves spandex clad super heroes and mystical villains. The comic book world is more about fantasy than reality, but sometimes reality collides with their fantasy world.

Following President Barack Obama's historic speech recently, in which he became the first sitting American president to endorse gay marriage, the topic has become a hot button subject on every talk show, news show and press outlet in the world. And now it appears the comic book industry is getting on board as well.

In 1992, Marvel revealed that Northstar, a character that was featured at the time in the Alpha Flight comic book, was indeed gay. Now 20 years later, in issue #50 of the Astonishing X-Men, Northstar (real name Jean-Paul Beaubier) proposed to his long time boyfriend Kyle Jinadu. They will marry in issue #51 set to hit stores in June.

"The Marvel Universe has always reflected the world outside your window, so we strive to make sure our characters, relationships and stories are grounded in that reality," Marvel editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso said in a press release. "We've been working on this story for over a year to ensure Northstar and Kyle's wedding reflects Marvel's 'world outside your window' tradition."

In addition to the wedding between X-Man Northstar and the love of his life Kyle Jinadu, DC Comics is set to reveal a major character as gay in the coming months in one of their books.

DC has tackled the subject previously, including with the relaunch of the Batwoman series in 2006 that revealed lead character Kathy Kane was a lesbian. The Batwoman comic has remained a top seller for DC over the last few years, and J.H. Williams III has actually been named the 'Artist of the Year' for Batwoman the last two years running by SuicideGirls.

Now, a major male character is apparently set to come out of the closet. “One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June," said DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio earlier this month.

While no solid confirmation has been given by DC Comics regarding who it will be, most rumors have pointed to the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, who was originally introduced to the DC Universe in 1941. He was the first ever Green Lantern, although in a much different incarnation than the Green Lantern Corps that survive today in most comic books.

The comic book industry as a whole has always been focused more towards the young male demographic, but these new characters help to broaden the comic book universe. It may sound hokey or somewhat old fashioned to think that way, but comic books are a real slice of pop culture and the introduction of more gay characters as well as the idea of gay marriage can only be seen as a positive step in the realm of science fiction, fantasy, comics, and real world social dynamics.

I had this post written over a week ago. I had just walked home from his house for what I knew would be the last time. I was so sad that I could have cried, but I didn’t. I sat down and I wrote about it. When I woke up later and re-read what I had written, I knew it could never see the light of day. He didn’t deserve those words, like he didn’t deserve me. Words help me remember, and I desperately need to forget.

I had written something like it before: ten years ago sitting in an ex-boyfriend’s house in Providence. He was going to leave me, I knew it, so while he slept I would look around. I memorized the way the black curtains fell across the dirty cracked window pane, the way I could see the black bars of the fire escape over the setting sun and Providence skyline. I memorized every poster: Marilyn Manson, The Crow, the black and white kissing girls. I memorized the way it smelled, like Yankee Candle’s Moonlight Path mixed with the shavings from the snake and iguana cages. But most of all I would look at him.

The way his two metal gauged hoop earrings clinked together when I touched his face. (Years later I would buy the same earrings just to hear that sound.) My fingers had traced every outline of his body and just watching him sleep was enough to make me want to cry. Because I knew he was going to leave me, and I wanted to remember. I didn’t want to ever forget a single thing.

And when he did leave me, I wrote it all down. I said that the sky would never be as beautiful as it looked though his window. I was foolish; that that one didn’t deserve those words either. But I always treasured them. I remember being caught scribbling by one of my sorority sisters, and when she asked me to read her something I had written I hesitated before deciding to read her that essay. I got about halfway though when I noticed she had tears streaming down her face. When I was done she grabbed my hand and told me that I should never stop writing. We cried, but I was happy to have finally shared him with someone.

Last Friday after creeping in from his apartment I decided that enough was enough. I would never again notice how leaving the bar drunk my hand slides so easily into his. I would never again get so drunk that I would try to not feel ashamed for winding up in his arms, knowing he was only holding me because he had no one better. Last Friday I wrote my final piece about loving him, and I said goodbye.

I had traced his every outline, but his feeling will fade, and in time so will this sharp feeling of total loss. I might run into him again down the line, and hopefully by then I will be able to genuinely smile. Hopefully by then I won’t have to turn away so he won’t see my lower lip trembling. I write to remember, but some things need to be forgotten, erased. Hopefully one day I can come back to this and remember how last Friday was the start of something worth remembering.

Men In Black III topped the box office for Memorial Day weekend, knocking The Avengers down a peg. It pulled in $73.4 million over the four day weekend. It’s currently rated at 77% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.



Warner Bros. is pushing the advertisements for The Dark Knight Rises at full force, with dozens of poster releases and a new television spot. Christian Bale also gave an interview in June’s Rolling Stone Magazine.

The Amazing Spider-Man is not rushing their ad campaign, instead they are maintaining a steady approach Most recently, a new Australian trailer has surfaced that includes new footage. Not too much new footage, but it’s more of the steady stream of bait we’ve been seeing.

Kevin Fiege spoke with Empire Magazine, giving information on both Thor 2 and Iron Man 3. Fiege revealed they would be featuring a new major villain in Thor 2. When it was announced Mads Mikkelson was cast in the film, many assumed he was the villain. If he is, he likely won’t be the major villain, unless he can pull off a blonde female wig. A reliable source has told Bleeding Cool the major villain will be Enchantress.

In the same interview, Fiege talked Iron Man 3. He confirmed they will not be doing the Demon in a Bottle storyline that tackles Tony’s alcoholism. Fiege says, Iron Man 3 will be the most personal journey Tony Stark has taken since Afghanistan and will be the most spectacular of the Iron Man movies. He also teased that they will be introducing a new hero outside of the Avengers. Ashley Hamilton is also in talks to play the villain, Firepower.





Two new clips from Prometheus have been released. There is both behind-the-scenes footage and new scenes from the movie included. Director Ridley Scott is also thinking about the future, and he wants Harrison Ford in the Blade Runner sequel.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation has been pushed back. The additional time is going to be used to film new scenes in 3D. There is also talk of other ulterior motives, such as bringing in Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander.

After firing Community creator Dan Harmon, NBC released a memo which gives detailed answers that the cast is supposed to use to avoid any interview questions about Dan Harmon’s release. Below are examples of the stock answers NBC has asked the cast to give:

[OccupyLA Welcomes Its Occu-Bus Comrades]

For very personal reasons I don’t respond well to verbal abuse, and people had been yelling at me from the moment my cab pulled up in proximity to the bus I needed to catch. The wheels of the vehicle I was in had barely ground to a halt before the screaming started.

“You can’t pull up here.”

“But I’m getting on one of the buses.”

“Hurry up.”

“I’m trying to.”

“Move it.”

“I can’t, I have to pay the driver and get my bags.”

“Move along.”

I’m no futzer or dilly-dallier for fucks sake. And the cops wouldn’t exactly be happy if I vacated the cab without paying my tab. Argh! What did they want me to do that I wasn’t already doing?



Flustered, I threw myself and my bags onto the first New York bound bus I found. Only to be yelled at again. This time by an alternate driver, for some bizarre reason involving his need to sit in a specific seat so he could use a boombox to help him sleep?!?

“You don’t want to be in this bus if I can’t sleep. NO ONE DOES!!!!!”

I was getting sick of men taking their frustrations out on me. Fuck this shit.

I jumped off that bus and on to the next, only to be yelled at again, this time because it was “full.” Only it wasn’t. Fuck this shit, again.

Having run out of New York buses available to board, I collapsed with my bags on the pavement as chaos reigned around me. The presence of the police, barking unnecessary and nonsensical orders, which in turn harassed and panicked riders, was irrational. It was merely causing undue stress and hindering proceedings with absolutely zero tactical gain. After all, they were getting what they wanted, us “trouble makers” were leaving town. Like most abusive situations though, it seemed to be a power play, an action that gave the abuser the illusion of control. I hope someone felt better after yelling at me.



I sat on the cold hard concrete for a couple of minutes with my head in my hands, trying to tune out the un-checked aggression I’d been accosted with. I looked up and saw a friendly face walking towards me. It belonged to Stephen Webber, the deceptively unassuming and utterly awesome individual that had wrangled funds for the fleet of fourteen 99% Solidarity buses from the NNU. He told me not to worry, that two more NYC buses were waiting in the wings. Then, as he approached, so did the swing driver from the first bus I’d tried to board. I guess he felt guilty (he was), and offered to carry my bags to the second bus, which had now magically found room for me.

Ensconced in the relative calm of the bus, I got myself situated. Having captained one of the three buses out from LA, I’d bought a power converter with me to create a charging zone for the power hungry livestreamers aboard my designated media bus. As I negotiated with the diver as to how best to distribute his cigarette lighter-sourced juice, a female fellow Brit chirped, “Are you English?”

I turned around to see who’d inquired and immediately honed in on a girl with a crimson shock of hair. There was only one person it could be: UK journalist Laurie Penny a.k.a. my recent Twitter acquaintance @PennyRed.



I’d started following her after my friend, SG contributor @ZDRoberts had raved about her work, and had subsequently posted an excerpt from her Notes from the New Age of Dissent book – an essay entitled “In Defense of Cunt” – on this very blog. Consequently, when @PennyRed’s message saying “@99Solidarity trying to get in touch with you” showed up in my timeline, I’d immediately reached out to help. Turned out she’d been commissioned to write a story on the Chicago #NoNATO trip by The Independent, and needed a spot on one of our buses – something, as a member of the 99% Solidarity team, I’d been able to facilitate.

At the time, she’d told me she was only taking the bus one way, out from New York to Chicago, so it was a pleasant surprise to see her on the return ride. It was this kind of serendipity, born of often adverse situations, that’d been a reoccurring theme in the past few days. After all, if the first bus driver hadn’t been so offensive, I’d have never boarded this one, and we’d never have met.



The ride back otherwise was pretty uneventful, and, being a mere 15-hour journey, was far less grueling than my 50-hour epic ride out from LA. As the NY skyline appeared on the horizon, the mostly slumbering bus began to stir. “Welcome back to the rotten apple,” shouted one passenger as I stared at the deceptively beautiful view ahead. Closing in on our Upper West Side drop off point, another hollered with barely a hint of irony, “Mic Check! Does anyone know if there’s an action scheduled for today?”


[The 99% Solidarity Buses Arrive Back In NYC]

As a bus captain and member of the 99% Solidarity crew, at times, organizing occupiers was akin to herding cats. But that’s kind of the point. These free-thinking individuals doggedly refuse to follow the crowd like sheep, and are not easily led. It’s this very quality that more Americans could do to be imbued with. They could also use a little of the tenacity of occupiers, something that those who claim the Occupy movement is over clearly underestimate.



My coast-to-coast adventure had been a trip in more ways than one. Thought I’d traveled across the country, I’d actually seen very little of it from the microcosm of the occu-bus. But I’d been rewarded in other ways. As I rolled across America, I’d forged new friendships, strengthened the bonds of existing ones, and substantially extended my network of like-minded activists. As a group, we’d learned a few things too; That a little organization goes a long way and that united by a common cause we could depend on and trust in the kindness of strangers, especially if those strangers self-identified as occupiers.



Though 99% Solidarity had always hoped that the Chicago trip would lead to greater cohesion and an exchange of ideas between occupiers from different cities, no one had anticipated it would lead to an actual exchange of occupiers to the extent that it did. As I write this, I’m on sabbatical from LA, occupying my friend, investigative journalist @Greg_Palast’s couch in NYC. And, having been made to feel so at home by the Occupy Chicago crew, all of whom were strangers to me prior to the advent of this trip, I look forward to paying it forward to the new members of OccupyLA once I return to the arbitrary place on this rock hurtling through space that I currently refer to as home.

Talking of which, one of the other things I realized on this fantastic journey is that regardless of whether I’m in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago or my native United Kingdom, when I’m amongst occupiers I am home.
