I'm as fascinated as scared by underwater life. I often think how cool it must be to fly in the sea but the idea of not seeing a monster arriving without the possibility of running away terrorizes me. Well that's stupid, who could escape to a dinosaur on Earth anyway.. IN FACT :
A few years ago I modeled for a.. begginer photographers workshop and the guy who organized it wanted to make another in Tunisia I think, to make underwater picture which is kind of my dream so, I HEARD IT. I can swim but I'm scared. I'm a fucking chick I'm scared of everything. So he was a fond of diving and I considered taking lessons.. (I had no news about this workshop, nevermind) I still wanna do it. I've already started practising yôga, pole dance and skate, I've wanted it for years and I can't do everything at once but, I keep diving in mind. I need diving partners.
I want to be Alexander Safonov seriously. This guy is so lucky to see and photograph all those marvellous fishes and whales and all.
I've been obsessed with the french/belgium band Applause lately. (thank God they sing in English, I hate french in songs) This band has kind of everything I like. Beautiful melodies, beautiful music, beautiful voice, I haven't really paid attention to the texts for the moment but they look cool too. When I love a voice I want to see the head who has it.

The 2nd Weekend of Coachella, I went with my buddy Kurosune strictly to party. We crashed something like 6 parties in 24hrs! Fucken madness, and we didn't know where we were going to stay, so we slept outside for a while (it was 111 degrees, so it's not that crazy, haha) before we found a spot at my crazy aunts house..she kicked us out before noon so we had no choice but to keep partying (on 3 hours sleep )

I know you all probably wonder why I'm not fatter and occasionally (usually somewhere between my second and fifth slice of cake) I do wonder this myself.
Anyway this weekend my sister's boyfriend flew down from Germany to ask my father's permisssion for her hand in marriage. Awwww
To mark said occasion, I had to bake. Yes, me. Why? because my sister is less domesticated than a playmate, that's why.
I was happy to do it though ,as you all know. I won't go into my usual babble of ingredients and methods ect. If you'd like a recipe, inbox me. But, when he got here, they had tea. And this is what I made.

I play 3 instruments. I wish they were cool instruments like guitar or drums but my parents are very classical..

It's like a flute for dummies lol Very easy to learn. Actually, when I was in grade 4, it was mandatory in our school to know an instrument so everyone in my grade had to but a recorder. At the time, I hated it but now I'm really grateful. All schools should add this to their syllabus.

It's very pretty. I've been playing piano since I was 5 and it's the instrument I play the most.

That's my violin. I've had it since I was 10 but only started using it like last year. I know, I'm very lazy It's just such a beautiful instrument but I'm not a very patient learner so being taught how to play it really didn;t appeal to me. i just liked staring at it. Now I'm self-teaching. Will upload a video sometime
But mostly, I just enjoy singing. There's always some song playing in my head so I'm like a walking jukebox at home. It irritates my siblings to no end

I know for sure I want to go to Gaitlinburg. I went in 2010 with some amazing Suicide Girls and had a blast. I definitely want to go back and relive some memories Gaitlinburg was so much fun, and I pretty much haven't stopped talking about it since. I also really want to explore the Smoky Mountains. I'd love to go camping if I can acquire the necessary gear. My lovely friend Ashbury_ told me about these sweet hammocks. They are the absolute best, and that set comes with a bug net, rain tarp, and all the set up extras. They're super compact, but really high quality. Plus, the pugs could fit inside with me WANT.
I've never been camping solo, although I do light hiking by myself all the time. I think this is going to be an amazing adventure if I can actually do it! Ideally, I'd like to spend at least 3-4 days in the wilderness. Unfortunately, I have zero equipment and close to zero skills... Any hiking or camping gurus with some advice?

Ah I'm so excited about this trip, and the more I talk about it and research it, the more excited I get. Can it just be June already?!
Oh and speaking of hiking... I shot a brand new set last week with Alissa with help from Rourke. I have never been so excited about a photoshoot before. I am so glad I was able to shoot in my favorite place in Ohio (Hocking Hills) before I move again. The finished product won't be out for a few months, but here are some pictures from the shoot! In other exciting news, my foster puggy is getting adopted this weekend! He was finally cleared by the vet (he had some medical issues) and already has found a loving family! I'm gonna miss this little dude.

A new Dark Knight Rises trailer is out. This trailer seems to have fixed the problem with Bane’s voice. Although, now there are complaints about it sounding like it’s a separate audio track.
The Avengers has released internationally, but we still have a few days to wait until it comes to theatres here in America. Spoilers for the movie have been running high, despite many believing the international version is missing a few scenes. With only a few days till the movie hits, I am avoiding spoilers at all costs. While I can’t tell you what happens in the movie, I can tell you it has already pulled in $178 million overseas. I can also tell you that the positive response to Hulk in the movie is changing the tune of Marvel executives who thought his franchise was dead. With the increase of popularity, it now looks like a new Hulk movie might be coming in 2015.
Marvel has already changed the actor playing Hulk from Edward Norton to Mark Ruffalo, but what do they intend to do when other stars, like Robert Downey Jr, move on? Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege addressed that issue at CinemaCon saying they would not reboot the series. He said:
‘I think Bond is a good example. Let’s put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn’t, and I’m still here making these movies, we don’t take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it’.
Director of Chronicle, Josh Trank, has been signed to develop the script for a Fantastic Four reboot. It is unknown whether he will also direct the movie and as of now it looks like it will be based on how the script turns out. If Trank makes this anything like Chronicle it might be more of a Dr. Doom movie and less of a Fantastic Four film, which I am more than okay with.
The Wolverine will be shooting in Japan and Australia this year, and is set for release on July 26, 2013. Fox is determined to get the most out of the rights to the X-Men and Marvel’s mutants while they have them. Now they are also talking about doing a New Mutants movie, although it is unclear if that will be in addition to a sequel for X-Men: First Class or if it will be the sequel.
Rumored Star Trek 2 spoilers have now been confirmed. If you wanted to see Star Trek 2 completely unspoiled, skip ahead now. Still here? Okay, but I warned you. First up, Leonard Nimoy will be back as Spock Prime. Not surprised yet? How about, the Klingons will be featured in the second movie. That’s not all, we have all been lied to. Benedict Cumberbatch will not be playing a new villain, but will be reprising the roll of Khan in the upcoming Star Trek film. There you have it, three spoilers no waiting.
Last week I mentioned that Peter Jackson was shooting The Hobbit at 48-frames per second (fps). Not everyone was as excited by the change as I was. At CinemaCon last week, fans were unimpressed by the fps change, some complaining it made the film look homemade. Jackson responded to the criticism saying it is something film goers will just come to except. I think he’s right; this is likely just a case of people complaining about change cause it is new and different, not necessarily worse.
Finally, science fiction is catching up with reality. Multiple billionaires including James Cameron and the people behind Google have unveiled plans for mining asteroids. This little bit of science fiction could become a very practical way to extract resources without taking them from the earth. With governments cutting space program budgets around the world, it is good to see someone at least trying to make headway into the final frontier.

It can be hard, especially with my tendency to dote on the negative, and get anxious and home sick at the drop of a hat. Its been a looong time since I wrote a proper blog. About a million things have happened since last fall so I'm not even sure where to start!
So, as some of you may know, my car started overheating back in September. I took it to a shop in Oakland and they said my head gasket was about to blow. They wanted $1800 to fix it. I cried, haha. Took the car to my parents, my dad did a few minor repairs and gave it back to me. Told me to limp it along until after the holidays. I didn't feel like that was the best plan, but I went with it. Naturally, more driving meant more overheating, and about three days after I paid the car off (a 60 month loan) I found out that the entire engine block had cracked! I had to buy a new engine, in addition to replacing the head, water pump, timing belt, etc. so now I'm back to being several thousand dollars in debt. Le siiigh.
But, I have a functional car now! Woo!
SF Shootfest went down a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING! So many great girls, everyone was so gorgeous and sweet. Saint is a saint (hehe) for hosting us in her incredible loft I didn't do any modeling, but I shot some nice portraits of Quinne, Damsel, Hildreth & _zia_. The afterparty was also super fun (minus my ex showing up). I met some awesome people! Here are my photos from the day:

I've been trying to shoot as much as possible lately. Photography is still very much my passion and main hobby. Dating another photographer is so great! We push each other to shoot more, we share Photoshopping techniques, and we model for each other. I feel like the shots Travis takes of me are really some of my strongest. The chemistry is so real and intense. Its so easy for me to project romanticism, happiness, and sex appeal when we shoot together because its REAL. I moved into a new place recently! Its sooo much nicer than our old house. Kelsey and I's third roommate Andrew got a fancy job and moved to San Francisco, so its just the two of us now. I went to Durban with talamia, Tarion, PunkSkunk and Xaosnyte and it was awesome, I love my friends and I love the sea = win.
I also got to meet Cuddlefish and get to know Lumo a bit better. Lumo is a tiny ball of happy energy who can eat like no other. It feels like they have always just been around.
Cuddlefish and PunkSkunk had a cook off which talamia took really seriously, she even made score sheets and a trophy. They had candles sort of like survivor and talamia gave me my own Jeff Probst impersonation of tribal council. I think the loser (maybe winner?) was supposed walk naked into the ocean but I left before any of that was decided. They tied
I managed to take 2 sneaky pictures of ninja talamia being awesome.
We also played some sort of mystical card game and by we I mean them, I exercised my super skill of power napping.
To back track a little to last weekend.. Tarion had a ninja's vs pirates party.
I got to hang out with Pyke who is a total honey and you should check out Star Gazer, it's such a creative, cute set.
Crashcarburn is one of my favourite South African bands and they played a gig on top of the Lister building roof, in town just after sunset. I really love Joburg at sunset everything seems sparkly and magical.

So as I told in my previous post, I keep repeating "when I finish my work". I am now just living in the next future.
I should go back to life in three weeks. Meanwhile, I'm working on the same project for one year (it stopped several times) this time it comes to its end and it's relieving but I'm really pissed off. Also I'm helping a collegue for a video clip that she should have never accepted since she couldn't do it alone so, free fast boring work added...
Fortunatly, I practice yôga or pole dance daily, which is my personnal moment of the day.. Getting stronger is a loooong work when you start from nothing! It's frustrating but interesting. Anyway I still can see I improve my flexibility and it's encouraging.
I made the design, and now I'm supervising the project, which avoids me to do the boring animation part. The subject is not sexy and it contributes to my haste it's over.
I try to do it the faster I can, I barely think about what I do + I'm bad at backgrounds + not ùy artistic direction (changed many times) + not my storyboard = it's very average :/ My collegue is even not a director and her exigences tend to sink my mood considering the time and money we have (not) These are not final images. I'll post them once in the film too, they will look much better.
So, I'm just frustrated to sing only in my head and "when I finish my work" I will :
- sleep and go back to normal life with a normal schedule - spend some time with my friends - GET A NEW FUCKING LONGBOARD and go outside and have teatimes in parks! - go back to serious personnal work, start this picture book about south american rainforest (harlf personnal half commisionned) - cook for real, no more quick me, yay for kick ass vegan food.
Northern Europe is calling me. Well it always has, but, now more.

I also travelled too Northampton which is a 10 hour round trip from where I live all in one day to only be confronted by the most rude photographer I had ever met. Not only was he umprofesional he also pretty much told me I have a 'Shit arse' and was very patronising.... I have one pic from him which are OK I guess... he just put me off modelling so so much and really knocked my confidence.
I also celbrated my 25th birthday which freaked me out! So I decided to go a more 'normal' color (like in the pics above) I have yellow and bright orange before but now im more of an auburn color
My best friend also got married last weekend and It was amazing she looked stunning... and yes I did cry! She was one of my first good friends to be married and they are so so right for one another <3 it was an honor to be invited and everything was handmade... we spent hours decorating all the tables.. but I think we did a good job as you can tell it was a vintage themed wedding!
Also one last thing... IM 5 WEEKS PREGNANT Im seeing my midwife in 3 weeks to find out exactly how far gone I am but I think its between 5-8 weeks (yes im useless at working these things out) I have to tell my parents and friends yet BUT i thought I would tell you guys first you can send us good vibes

I worked C2E2 on the last day of the convention, so I didn't get to take as many pictures as I would've liked, but it was still so much fun and so awesome to see everything. I worked the booth with Radeo, Jaclyn, and Cleo. These ladies are so gorgeous and funny and just fun to be around in general. It was a lot of fun hanging with the girls. Here are all the pictures I took. Walking down the long ass hallway to get to the convention. Had I known that MapQuest would fuck me in the ass, even though it's done it to me plenty of times before, it took me to the exact opposite side of where the convention was, and I ended up walking down a 75637 mile long hallway, only to have to walk down two more that were the same length to get to the convention. The booth that was across from ours. A very lovely and sweet member bought us pizza, it was so good. Thank you again. The best Boba I've ever seen, and heard. His helmet made him talk funny. I loved it. Chris Uminga was the artist that inspired my tattoo artist and I. I have Leonardo on my left outer calf, but slightly altered. His sword is stabbing a piece of pizza, for those of you who have never seen it, here you go. Anyways. So awesome. It was a lot of fun, I love nerd conventions the most. I cannot WAIT for Wizard World in August. I've actually been re-thinking who I want to dress up as. It has come to my attention that most of my friends who were going to go and dress up as the 13 Captains from Bleach with me, are now either not doing that anymore, or can't go anymore. So, I've been looking around at pictures of other people I could be. I always try to find someone that looks like me, so I don't have to do anything devastating to my hair. When I did Skarlet, I simply switched up my hair slightly and put red highlights in instead of turning my whole head red. If anyone can look at me and think of any good characters to dress up as that I look like, please let me know! I need ideas so I can start making my costume. I've always been very fond of Tifa, but I am unsure.

I bought jelly beans from jellybelly.com recently and got them in the mail the other day. I got Kiwi, Cotton Candy, Berry Blue, and Birthday Cake Remix. They all taste so good except for the Birthday Cake one. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it, because when you first bite into it, it tastes really good, but then you start to get a popcorn flavor. After you swallow though, it goes back to tasting like birthday cake. It's confusing, and I'm not sure if I like it. So pretty.

In May of this year Dita Von Teese will embark on an 18-month major North American tour that is the culmination of her 20-year career as a burlesque artist. In line with her passion for presenting the art in its purest form, her “Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray!” shows will feature a diverse cast of authentic characters alongside four of Dita’s most dazzling sets.
SuicideGirls caught up with the Queen of Teese to talk about her show, her inspirations, and her philosophy on glamour and self-invention.
Nicole Powers: I caught your Strip Strip Hooray show at the Roxy in December of 2010. How’s the new show going to differ?
Dita Von Teese: We’re really working on refining our support talent and working toward trying to be able to show all of my biggest production numbers. This time I have four of my biggest production numbers in it, whereas before I think I did maybe one of the bigger shows. I really feel like now we have the perfect, diverse, wonderful cast. Every single act brings the house down. Also we have a lot more additions to the production in general like the staging, so it’s just a more fleshed out show.
NP: Can you talk about some of the people that are going to be in the show?
DVT: We have our MC Murray Hill, which I’m sure you remember, who, for me, is the best MC in all of burlesque, and really understands how you translate that bawdy humor that used to exist in classic burlesque [and make it] relevant to the current times. I also have Dirty Martini. She is a legend in burlesque and is this amazing, beautiful, larger than life performer. I love having her in the show because not only is she a wonderful person, she’s a great role model for the more voluptuous women and a great star for burlesque. This time I’m being reunited with my partner in crime who originally I used to perform a lot with named Catherine D’Lish, who is also responsible for creating three of my four costumes in the show. All of these big extravagant Swarovski crystal costumes are all her handiwork. She is a wonderful performer in her own right. We also have Selene Luna, who I am sure you saw. We have one of my favorite boylesque performers, Monsieur Romeo.
NP: I love that you have boylesque.
DVT: That I picked up in France. We have Lada, who is one the great stars of the Crazy Horse in Paris. This time around we actually have her performing one of the acts that the Crazy Horse is known for. So if you can’t go to Paris, we’re going to bring a little bit of Paris for people to see here. [And we have] Perle Noire. She’s a beautiful, African-American girl that does a great Josephine Baker that really brings the house down every single time.
NP: I know that you’ve been wanting to do something on this scale for a while now.
DVT: Well, thanks to Live Nation and thanks to everyone that’s working on my management team and production we’re managing to do it. Because you know a show of this size, with this big of a cast and this kind of production value, doesn’t come easy at a $35 ticket price. But that was really important to me, that we keep the ticket price accessible. I could have said, yeah, let’s go up to $100. A lot of people would pay $100 to see a show like this. But I wanted to make sure that everyone that wants to see it could see it. Live Nation definitely made that possible. It’s really amazing to have the support of them. They’re helping us get lots of really great press for the show and I’m really excited that they’re just in general getting behind burlesque. They’re responsible for so many of the big concerts and I think this is the first time they’ve gotten behind a burlesque show.
NP: That’s what amazed me when I saw the show at the Roxy; for a $35 ticket price you had a full-on Vegas production in there almost.
DVT: Yeah, it’s tough. The four numbers I’m doing, it’s $1 million worth of my money put into this show. I’ve made them over the course many years. These are my best offs. That’s what you’ll see basically, the past 20 years of my work all coming to its zenith I think. I’m not going to say it’s the last chance to see my shows like this. But, certainly, I really have been putting my all into people seeing these shows as I originally meant them to be seen in the next year and a half, doing a full tour of these shows.
NP: So far you’ve just announced the West Coast dates, but they’re just the start of your 18 month plan.
DVT: Basically, because I have so many other commitments, I’m doing it in little sections. I’m not like a rock band where I’m just going to go for a year and a half. After this West Coast [run], we’ll soon announce the Midwest and the East Coast dates, and then we’ll go to the South. I’ll be on tour for a month and a half and then off for a month or two months. We’re just taking it slow.
NP: Are there going to be international dates?
DVT: It’s really important to me to start in America, because I’ve done so much in Europe and a lot of people have had a chance to see my show there. I feel like I’ve neglected the US. It’s not by choice, it’s just because I think it took a lot longer to get people behind me to do this.
NP: Do you think that Americans are less comfortable with nudity in entertainment than Europeans?
DVT: I think it’s really interesting the way that classic burlesque is an American invention. This whole idea of striptease to music in a theatre with feathers and rhinestones is American style. I often wonder why people still don’t really understand what I do here. I think there’s still a lot of people that think that I just dress up in vintage clothes and drive old cars around, and that I don’t do anything and I just take off my clothes whenever I feel like it. They don’t realize there’s actually a real career in it and a lot of work that goes into my production. But I think one of the reasons it just hasn’t gotten as much mainstream attention here in America as it has say in the UK, France and Germany is because here they can’t really show exactly what I do on TV. A lot of people are living by the TV, and when I appear on a TV show or something they really can’t show what I’m doing.
NP: I know that you split your time between your homes in Los Angeles and Paris. Are there any new couture creations from your Parisian friend Mr. Pearl for this show?
DVT: Yes, in fact I’m debuting a new Mr. Pearl creation. I just had a fitting the other day, our maybe tenth fitting. He’s created a special lingerie set that is going to be debuted with my new martini glass for the opening of the show. I also have a really wonderful designer named Alexis Mabille, who shows in Paris. He made a beautiful tuxedo that I’m going to be wearing with the Mr. Pearl corset. We’ve been diligently working in Paris [doing] fittings between the three of us since last summer.
DVT: Oh, yeah. Mr. Pearl is really a magical creature.
NP: How did you first come across Mr. Pearl?
DVT: Mr. Pearl is a legend in the world amongst people that love corsetry. I’d known about his name for a long time and I’d seen pictures, and I guess maybe about eight or nine years ago American Vogue did a story about me, and [International Editor at Large] Hamish Bowles wanted to do a story on me and Mr. Pearl together. So a meeting arranged between the two of us. In my mind, I felt like I heard about Mr. Pearl, he’s elusive, he doesn’t use computers, he won’t be interviewed, he doesn’t meet people. He’s just into his art. That’s what he does. He’s very private. I think I would never dared try to contact him, knowing about his mystery. So I had this meeting in Paris with him at The Ritz, and he brought me a little bunch of violets and it was like an instant attraction to each other. We were crazy about each other. We became really, really close friends and have been ever since. It was amazing to lose my perceptions of what kind of person I thought he was. Really, truly, nobody on the face of the planet can do what Mr. Pearl does. You could sit down with every designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, and Alexander McQueen if he were still alive, and they will all say that what Mr. Pearl does is an absolute mystery and no one can do it. It’s crazy. I’m very lucky to know him. He’s made so many iconic pieces for all of those designers. I’m completely astonished by him and his brilliance.
NP: What makes a Mr. Pearl’s corset so special?
DVT: It’s really magical. You look at it, there’s such a difference in the shape that he creates, and what he manages with very thin, thin fabrics. The corset he’s making me to wear on stage is made out of one layer of very, very fine tulle, yet it pulls my waist in beyond what any other corsetmakers can do. I wear other corsets, but nobody can make that shape that he does. Also, when you have a really close look at his work, the extent of the perfection of every single stitch – I’ve shown these corsets to other corsetmakers and they can’t even comprehend it….The corset he has made for me that I’m wearing is really a special one. We just had a fitting the other day and even he stood back and went “Oh, wow!” It’s so sheer that you can actually see my skin underneath and the shape. It’s like you’re looking at a corseted body, but with x-ray vision. In all of these years of making corsets, he was stunned by the effect that he had created with this new corset.
NP: This is for the martini glass, which is your signature set, which you say you’re reinventing. That seems almost like re-inventing the wheel. What made you want to re-imagine it?
DVT: I’ve done it a lot over the years and so I’ve made different costumes and different sized glasses. This time, part of my motivation was that there’s a lot of people that started copying the design of my original glass. Even though I know it’s supposed to be flattery…It’s strange because it’s so close to me, and something I’ve done for so long. You’ve got to always evolve and one up yourself. I’ve made a few glasses in the past few years, this time I wanted to do something beautiful and extravagant, and that looks even more like a glass than my original one that I made all of those years ago. This new one is a really beautiful design and is entirely covered in Swarovski crystals, which was no small feat…One of our goals, between me and Catherine D’Lish, who has designed and made these outfits, was how can we just make it blindingly beautiful and do something just so dazzling that people think that it’s plugged into the wall it looks so brilliant.
We’re also really big fans of Liberace. If you know anything about Liberace’s story, the way he arrived to the extravagant level that he did was that he told himself every time that he went on stage that he was going to do something more over the top. It started off as one simple piano concert; he wore a white jacket and it caused a stir. Next he changed one little thing, put a candelabra on the piano, and that cause a stir. So we always had this idea that we have to make every costume more exciting than last, and that’s how we arrived at what you’ll see in Strip Strip Hooray.
NP: Are you going to extend that concept and put a martini-shaped swimming pool in your backyard any time soon?
DVT: [laughs] That’s a good idea. I don’t know, I’m pretty happy with just a normal kidney-shaped swimming pool. My house is kind of an extension of what you would think, although it has nothing really to do with my stage life. People always walk in and say, “Oh, wow. It’s not what I imagined, but it’s exactly right.” My house is a combination of a lot of different things, but there’s not really any feathers or rhinestones laying around really.
NP: I’ve always associated you with exceptionally good taste. Liberace made a career out of outdoing himself to the point where taste went out the window, but there’s no way that’s going to happen with you.
DVT: I’m thinking about Liberace’s house now. Yeah, my house is definitely not like Liberace’s.
NP: I went to the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. Have you ever been there?
DVT: Many, many times over the years. Catherine D’Lish and I used to before we’d make a costume. We’d go out there, make a pilgrimage, and put our hands on the biggest rhinestone in the world. I’m very familiar with the Liberace Museum and I’m very, very sad that it’s gone.
NP: I know, it’s exceedingly sad.
DVT: It’s a sad state of affairs if you ask me. It’s, in a way, an end of an era. I feel like it’s not the Las Vegas I used to go to anymore. I don’t know what I’ll do if the show Jubilee ever closes. That’s the last great Vegas showgirl review. Without the feathers and the rhinestones and the topless showgirls – that’s it…It just feels like there’s such a commercialization and sanitization of Vegas happening. I feel like people keep going, “Let’s get rid of the old, in with the new. What about another Cirque du Soleil show?” And to me, I love the Jubilee show. It’s funny, it’s beautiful, it’s classic Las Vegas.
NP: Could you ever see yourself maybe producing a show like that?
DVT: I would absolutely love to. I would also love to be a guest star there at the Jubilee or try to do something to be involved in something like that. I would love to be involved in the creation of a real showgirl show and making it accessible and enjoyable for modern audiences too. That would absolutely be a goal. I think especially in Vegas there’s not really any representation of authentic burlesque in any of the casinos. All these pseudo-burlesque clubs are exactly that, they’ve taken away all of the good elements of burlesque, they’re trying to get rid of the striptease and make it a family show. They’re trying to do what they did with the Burlesque movie, which is not really doing any favors for the great, daring women of burlesque that came before me and actually did perform a striptease.
I don’t really agree with rewriting the history of burlesque for the sake of commercializing it. Since the beginning of my career, with every new phase of my career and new chapter, I’ve had choices along the way that I don’t have to really do the striptease. But I feel like what’s really the point if you don’t? This is a historic art form in America, and I like the challenge of making something that is risqué, sophisticated, beautiful, and elegant. If you take away all of the risqué parts, what do you have? I’ve always liked the idea of bringing things together that maybe people find taboo or difficult or too racy. I love changing peoples’ minds about things like that, whether it’s fetishism or whether it’s striptease. I like the idea of changing peoples’ minds about what it can be and what it should like.
NP: For most people, the closest they get to maybe understanding the original, authentic art of burlesques is perhaps through the Gypsy movie or something like that. But there were so many more burlesque stars back in the day. People know Gypsy Rose Lee’s name because of the movie. If you could make a biopic about one burlesque star, who would you want to make it about and why?
DVT: I would say Lili St. Cyr. I think she was really thrilling and really, she would make a beautiful subject. She had a pretty great life. But let me also say, I keep dreaming of them doing the real story of Gypsy Rose Lee. Because her life was not what you saw in that pretty little musical. She had all kinds of exciting things happen in her life that she never wanted really to talk about. There’s a few books that expose what her life was really like. There were gangsters involved, there was murder, there was a lot of really crazy things that happened around her. If we could see the real story of Gypsy Rose Lee, I would love to watch that.
NP: What books would you recommend people read?
DVT: There’s a really great book called Stripping Gypsy that I liked a lot. Speaking of the Lili St. Cyr movie, there’s one called Gilded Lili, which is really great too. There’s a lot of books about Gypsy. I have pretty much read all of them.
NP: What about Lili’s life inspires you?
DVT: She was a lingerie designer and had a mail-order lingerie business that was actually open here in Los Angeles until I think the ‘80s. A lot of these glamorous women had really interesting and sometimes tragic stories. It’s great for people to see that behind these glamorous images they had a hard time, they had a lot to live up to. Also, Lili St. Cyr famously was a heroin addict in her later days. It wasn’t a very happy ending, but it was an interesting story.
NP: And I guess society also judged these women. We’re in strange times now, especially with the War on Women and the politics of sex in America. As a society, we’re almost coming full circle with these very puritanical views of female sexuality.
DVT: Yeah, definitely. I think it’s really interesting the way that originally burlesque back then was geared toward men and now there’s definite a shift in that most of the burlesque audiences comprise of women that are finding inspiration from it and empowerment from it; from either doing or watching and finding ways to bring it into their own life, seeing a show like Strip Strip Hooray and seeing other women that they can relate to.
I was really trying to put lots of different kinds of performers in the show so that a lot of people could walk away relating to them and being like, ‘Yeah, I could do that too. If she can do that, I can do that.’ Not to say that everyone needs to get up on stage, but to embrace your sensuality and understand that you’re most sexy when you’re having fun and you’re free. You can create your own glamorous world. You don’t have to wait for someone to give it to you. There’s a lot of things that I really love about burlesque, and all of the people that are fans of it and that are performers too. I just think that we’re women that are saying we like this, we feel good about this, we don’t have to be natural-born beauties with little pert noses and blonde hair and look great in bikinis to be sexy. There are other ways around it. There are other ways to do it other than just what we see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. I could never relate to that at all. That’s why I started styling myself and learning how to create glamour. I think that a lot of people are embracing burlesque for all of these factors – it’s self-creation.
NP: One of the joys of your last show was looking at the audience. It was the most glamorous crowd I have ever seen in LA. It must be quite gratifying for you to look out at your audience and see the effort people make, and to know you inspire that in people.
DVT: It is. It makes me feel good that other people feel the same way that I do about it, and that they discovered what I discovered a long time ago too. This is what makes me feel good about myself. Not everybody has to like it, but this is what makes me feel good. It’s not about trying to fit into a stereotype of sexy…
I remember really vividly the first time I saw this shift. I have been around performing for many years, since the early ‘90s, and I’ve watched my audience change. I remember really well the first time I ever really went “Oh my God, my fan base has totally shifted.” I felt like I had a different responsibility to live up to. It wasn’t anymore me just doing shows in strip clubs or for guys that were fetishists or for people that remembered sneaking into burlesques houses when they were little boys. Suddenly, I realized that I need to think of who my fans are now and think about what my message really is.
NP: And what do you think that message is?
DVT: It’s a lot of things. I think mostly I just keep trying to tell people what my story is and how I felt. I’m a natural blonde from a farming town in Michigan, and the truth is I am a very ordinary-looking girl. I know, because I’ve been there. Through learning the art of glamour and the art of self-creation and believing in it, and doing what makes me feel good about myself, I’ve been able to build a whole career around it and also to learn who I am as a woman, and it doesn’t really rely on someone else’s stamp of approval.

Let's see, what have I been up to lately...
Galavanting around Austin for sxsw! I'm still really bummed that I didn't get to go to the SG hosted sx party (I didn't find out about it until the night before as I haven't been on here much, and by then I couldn't get ahold of anyone to add me). Finally something in my home town and i didnt get to go! But I had a ton of fun doing other things . Free booze and lots of good music was had, this year.
My parents came and visited my new place (I moved!) and brought their fat puppy.
My friends at Burger and Friends posted new stuff on karmaloop! They have really fun stuff, take a second and check them out!

Went to coachella! I was really sick right before I went and it was stressing me out, but I got on some antibiotics right before I left that seemed to fix me up a bit. I was still pretty sick most of the time, which was quite unfortunate, but I still had an amazing time. Got to see all of my California loves, as well as Quarternote
It rained. That probably didn't help the sick factor.

I've been really sick. I was sick before coachella, came back and thought I was fixed up, then it came back four days later (really terrible case of strep). Went to the doctor and got more antibiotics. Three days later I'm in excruciating pain that's really hard to handle, so I go to a specialist, who tells me I have a complication called a peritonsillar abscess, which they need to perform on right away. Omg, most painful thing I've ever been through was them poking a needle full of numbing medicine into something that is already super pressurized. I almost started hyperventalating, it was fucking terrible. My boyfriend was amazing with dealing with my whiny crying and not having enough energy to shower for five days, hah. But I guess I'm kind of fixed up now? I still can't talk well, can't eat solid food, and am in a lot of pain, but I think it's mostly the big puncture wound healing and not the tonsil itself. I hope not, because if i have to do that again I'm going to fucking kill myself (k not really, but it was horrible).

It was the summer of 1976 in Los Angeles and the Ramones were playing second bill to the Flamin' Groovies at the Roxy. Across the pond, the Sex Pistols were still months away from achieving everlasting infamy by calling their host a "fucking rotter" while live on British TV. In a Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot off Third Street in L.A.s Fairfax District, an 11-year-old Marc Canter caught his fellow classmate, Saul Hudson (aka, an 11-year-old Slash of Guns N Roses), suspiciously eyeballing Canter's mini-bike parked outside. In those days there was a lot of bike stealing. I was one of the thieves, I know. Slash laughs. Its quite possible I was thinking about taking off with it because I used to be like that back then. Anyhow, thats how [Marc and I] met and weve been friends ever since.
By high school, Slash was into guitars and Marc was taking pictures of local rock bands. With a few candid photographs of his best friend, Marc Canter unknowingly began to document the rise of the greatest rock band of its time: Guns N Roses. Over twenty years in the making, Marcs new book, Reckless Road: Guns N' Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction, is a collection of exclusive interviews, rare photographs and original memorabilia including show flyers, magazine articles, ticket stubs, set lists, and hand-scrawled song lyrics. From the bands first gig at the Troubadour in 1985, to signing with Geffen Records, to being dubbed The Most Dangerous Band in the World, Marc Canter was there, up close and personal, camera and tape recorder in hand. The result is a comprehensive account of the bands early days, as well as a portrait of Marc and Slashs friendship, still strong to this day.
My goal here, Marc says, is to let everybody that likes this band or even if you dont like the band see the making of one of the greatest records ever made.
SuicideGirls met up with both Slash and Marc Canter at legendary rock and roll hangout Canters Deli, in the heart of Hollywood, to chat about Reckless Road and the stories behind the photographs. Even more, we got them both in front of the camera for their first-ever, joint video exclusive.
Erin Broadley: So, Reckless Road is a fascinating book.
Slash: Its great. Its probably the best rock and roll coffee table book Ive ever seen.
EB: Slash, the story goes that in 1976 you and Marc became friends when you tried to steal his bike?
Slash: [Laughs] Was it 1976? I guess, yeah [laughs]. I didnt actually steal it; I was checking it out. It was a mini-bike, and it was outside of Kentucky Fried Chicken on Third Street he was inside and saw this kid suspiciously checking out his bike and decided to intervene before something happened.
EB: [Laughs] Little kids protect their bikes, man. Its their livelihood. Its all theyve got.
Marc Canter: They call it a mini-bike but really its a motorbike. We went to Third Street School but I didnt know his name; I just knew his face. So I had this motorbike and was parked at KFC and Im in there, buying whatever, he was walking home, saw it and was thinking about stealing it. He looked inside to see who it might belong to or if anyone was looking and then he saw me and thought, Oh, I know him from school. So he went in and instead of stealing it, asked if he could ride it. We became friends from that point on and pretty much never looked back.
Slash: In those days there was a lot of bike stealing. I was one of the thieves, I know. Its quite possible I was thinking about taking off with it because I used to be like that back then. Anyhow, thats how we met and weve been friends ever since. After Marc and I hooked up in fifth grade, we were friends for a while though junior high school. Then somewhere in junior high school I took off and moved into deeper East Hollywood and I didnt see him for a while. At some point in high school we reconnected and hed turned into this mega rock fan, which I had too, but he was really serious. He had his cameras and shit and he would sneak them into concerts his favorite band was Aerosmith. He used to buy all kind of photos. Aerosmith was one of the major bands that I was a fan of when I started playing guitar and they definitely influenced what direction I went. So we had that new thing in common. I had started playing guitar at that point, and he just started taking pictures of everything because that was his way, you know [laughs]. Its funny because I look at the book now and all those pictures that he was taking all the time, as far as I was concerned he was just casually taking pictures of everything. I didnt expect it to be something later on. I never would have imagined that him being around all the time just taking 35 mm pictures would amount to this documentation later.
EB: Right. Theres a part in the book where, Slash, you say that the first thing you did as soon as you could put three chords together was start a band. And Adam Greenberg said it was almost like going to a rock and roll school. What was the creative climate like in L.A. as teens, learning how to play music?
Slash: I was pretty much an outcast in school and as a musician I was an outcast When I first picked guitar up it was during the summer time so I spent that summer learning how to play and I think by the next semester I started looking for musicians. At that time, Van Halen had come out so there were a lot of musicians in junior high. Thats where it all started. I met Ron Schneider and Adam Greenberg and that was probably the third throw-together band I had, but it was the first one that started playing keg parties and, you know, terrorizing peoples houses...
EB: Playing the senior citizens center.
Slash: Yeah, [laughs] all these bar mitzvahs. It was a cover band that could never find a singer. Which is, like, the story of my life. Still is, to this day.
EB: [Laughs]
Slash: It wasnt a big, heavy-duty, rock and roll scene in high school. There were a few musicians I was friends with. I went to four high schools, so every one I went to had its little clique of Eddie Van Halen wannabes [laughs]. Marc was hanging out, keeping tabs on the whole thing. Marc was also the first guy, when Guns N Roses first started, before Guns N Roses was even a nightmare, Marc was probably the only person interested in what I was really doing, [laughs] for the most part.
EB: Duff said that Marc was a pillar of stability for the band. How so?
Slash: When Duff and I first met, we met at Canters Deli. I used to work there and Marc would always help me out. I always had a job but if I was in between jobs, I would work at Canters. He was financially stable and I wasnt [laughs] he was just a really good, loyal friend. I still, to this day, dont have many loyal friends. So when Guns first started, he instantly took the job of marketing and doing all the promotion. We all did it but I was real fanatic about it, I never slept. [Laughs]
EBidnt you get fired from the Fairfax newsstand for conducting band business on their hours?
Slash: [Laughs] Yeah, thats where I used to sell tickets to customers at work. People would come in and Id sell Troubadour tickets.
MC: I used to feed the band. Not three meals a day, not every day, but when they were hungry they knew they could come to me and I could get them a pastrami sandwich or whatever was needed. And why not? Theyre my friends. I would drive them places, I had a car, I had gas -- they didnt. Id buy them guitar strings, whatever they needed, little things I was paying for some of the band magazine ads that were coming out. First we started with quarter page ads and they were like $288. It wasnt a big deal. Then after two of those, we went to full page and it got to be a little bit more expensive. But, at that time, I knew that would work for the record company people, like, Whats going on here? This band keeps selling out these Troubadour gigs and theyve got full-page ads. Its not just some flunky, fly by night band.
Then they found someone to help them with the demo tape but that person gave out in the middle and didnt put any more money in, so they needed a couple hundred bucks to get it out of hock. I did what I could. I didnt do everything but I helped because theyd do the same for me if they were in my situation. I lived at home, I had a good job, I didnt have any expenses and pretty much, if they did work, they had to support themselves. I always knew Slash would make it as a guitar player, even if he was just a guitar teacher, because there was such a talent there. His playing was very seductive; youd feel goose bumps when hed play because he just hit those certain notes.
EB: Slash, when you first hooked up with Axl, Marc wrote that you guys had an amazing chemistry and I think that this really comes through in a lot of these early photographs. What were those early days like when you and Axl first entered into each others lives?
Slash: When we first hooked up, it was pretty uneventful, the first time we met actually I answered an ad that Izzy and Axl had in the paper looking for a guitar player. I went down there to where they were staying, which were some little guest room off of a house above Sunset. It was real dark, it was one room, they had like a bed that took up 75 percent of it, a TV that took up another 10 percent, and there was like 15 percent walking space.
EB: [Laughs] Just a path.
Slash: [Laughs] Right. Axl was on the phone and Izzy was the one I did all the talking with. Id already met Izzy because he had come into my music store looking for copies of this picture of Aerosmith that I drew for Marc. He showed up at my work one day this little, scraggy Johnny Thunders comes walking in and hes looking for Saul Hudson, right? Thats how we met and he played me a tape of his band later that night. It was really ratty, with a tiny voice in the background screaming at the top of its lungs. But it was in key so I was interested. He told me the name of the band was Hollywood Rose so later on I answer this ad and it turns out to be Izzy and this guy Axl. The whole time I was there, Axl never got off the phone. Axl was in Mark Twain mode, Twain wreck, which was when he starts talking, cause he wont stop.
EB: [Laughs]
Slash: That was our first meeting. Nothing came of out of that. Nothing happened. Then I was another time when I was actually seeing my dad. I didnt see my dad that often but one time we hung out and we went down to Harrys Barbeque and I looked over and there was Axl and he was talking to this chick and, again, he was doing all the talking and she was just sitting there. That went on for the whole time I was there [laughs] so I didnt approach him and that was that. At some point we all hooked up when Axl approached me about playing with Hollywood Rose, which I thought was a pretty good idea at the time. Axl picked me but never talked to Izzy about it so I came along one day not knowing that there was any of this drama going on. I walk into this rehearsal studio called the Fortress in Hollywood this grungy little room and Izzy was there and, because Axl had made this decision without Izzys input, Izzy quit. So Steve Darrow and Steve Adler came in and we put a band together with the four of us. That was the beginning of me and Axls real relationship it started with the Hollywood Rose band.
EB: So it was chemistry but was it a volatile chemistry?
Slash: Well, yeah, thats what Im getting at [laughs].
EB:Some people think volatile chemistry fuels creativity.
Slash: I dont think volatility fuels anything. I dont agree with people who think you need that controversy to make music. Its not really conducive to writing songs. If you have chemistry, you dont need all that other shit [laughs]. Anyhow, but it started off cool and I liked Axl he came and stayed at my house but then the yin and yang of Axls personality started to present itself. One minute he was really, really cool and somebody that I liked a lot. You could spend almost two days with him like that. Then the smallest little thing would turn around and change his personality completely. Im pretty even keeled; nothing really phases me. Im probably like that to the extent that some people dont understand how I can be so fuckin blasé about things [laughs]. So we had a real contrast going on, but the music was cool. When we had a good time, we had a great fucking time. But when it was bad, I couldnt understand the origins of some of these issues and why they would be blown out of proportion to the extent that they were. To him, it meant everything. But to me, I could just never understand it.
So this band lasted for a little while. We did a bunch of gigs. Marc documented those gigs. Theyre in the book. Finally, we had this one gig where Axl got into a fight with somebody in the front row at the Troubadour and at that point Id already been through another thing with him jumping out of my car one night. It was just tedious. The good times were good but the tedious times were really trying. So at this particular gig, when he got into this fight with this guy, and the gig wasnt going as well, I thought it was pointless. After that show I was like, You know what? I dont have time for this. [Laughs] So I was in a couple bands during that period. I was very ambitious but, at the same time, there was a limit to what I would and wouldnt do to get by in this business. I wouldnt do a lot of conformist sell out kind of stuff.
When Duff came into town, we met at Canters. Steven, my girlfriend, Stevens girlfriend, a bottle of vodka Duff comes in and we went up to the mens room and hung out up there and drank the bottle of vodka and formed a little unity. We wanted to start a band with the three of us but, once again, we couldnt find a singer. That went on for like a month and finally that split up and Duff had, ironically enough, just moved into this cheap little apartment right across the street from Izzys apartment. So those guys met and the next thing you know, Duff ended up joining their band, which I think had become Guns N Roses at that point. They had Duff, Izzy, Axl, Tracii Guns and Rob Gardner who was the other drummer from L.A. Guns. I was working at Tower Video at the time and Axl and I sort of had a certain amount of animosity going on which was slowly but surely fading. Axl came into my work one day and goes, Do you want to play with me and Izzy? As much as I was really unsure about dealing with Axl again, I really liked Izzy and I liked Duff, obviously, so it seemed like maybe itd be a cool idea. I went and jammed with Izzy one night and he had the song called Dont Cry and we put the guitars together and thats really what started it.
At that point Duff came in with this idea of doing a Pacific Coast tour and going up to Seattle. He put all the gigs together from his experiences with a punk rock band up there in the Pacific North West and so I said, Sure, lets do this. Rob Gardner chickened out; he didnt want to take this perilous, fucking road trip with no real exact future in it. So we called Steve Adler and he came down and we rehearsed one night and that was basically it. We set off on that tour and our car broke down, fuckin 100 miles out of L.A. so we ended up hitchhiking all the way to Seattle. Thats really what cemented the band. The chemistry just on a human level between the five of us just as guys who stick to their guns with what it is they want to do. That trip really had a lot to do with it.
EB: Theres something special to these Guns N Roses photographs. Band photos today are so heavily retouched and photoshopped together. Theres something about how raw these photos are that really captures the bands gritty nature. Like the Reckless Road cover
MC: The cover is them, the day they came back from their Hell Tour in Seattle. They had a gig booked at the Troubadour on June 6, 1985 it was on a Thursday night, and there was something really special there. But it wasnt enough to solidify the band. Then a day or two after that, they went on that Seattle tour. The car broke down, they ate onions in the field, they hitchhiked
EB:Thats where the real camaraderie formed.
MC: They had each others backs after that. When they came back to Los Angeles they wanted to do a photo shoot to make flyers for the next gigs that they had. They booked a bunch of gigs and said, Lets go fuck up L.A. We can do it now. If we lived through this we can do anything. So if you look at the look on their face, theyre a gang. This is a gang now.
EB: They had their road warrior experience and now theyre ready to take it to the streets.
MC: Yeah. If you fucked with one of them, the other one would jump on your back and kill you. It was like they were a gang. And they started writing songs; each gig they came up with a new song, pretty much. And it was a great song. Just boom, after boom... There were no what theyd call dead songs... No fillers or throw always; every song they wrote was perfect. In fact the leads for the songs, the first time they ever played them are the same leads that you hear on the record. It was pretty much self-produced in that way because it worked. There was something special there. But anyway, back to the photos, yeah, my friend Jack Lue started taking pictures before I did and he would sneak his camera into concerts. Jack always did that and what happened was, to be honest with you, Eddie Van Halen was going to play at the Roxy and Jack Lue couldnt make that gig so he gave me his camera, showed me how to use it and said, Take pictures. So I took pictures and I had fun and when I got them back, I was freaked like, Whoa, these are really cool.
From that point on I started taking pictures at every concert we went to. That was in 1982. Right around that same time was when Slash was playing gigs everywhere. And now that I knew how to shoot, and I saw that it works, of course I was going to shoot him. I was already tape-recording his shows. Now I had a tape, and photos and the flyer. So I just kind of kept everything because I saw something that was special. If you dont tape-record it then its just gone. After awhile we met Axl and then it was like, wait a minute, now theres not only Axl, theres Izzy, Steven and Duff theres like five Jedis working together. It wasnt just Slash anymore. Now it was just like all of them together made a chemistry. Now, I was not only documenting Slash, but I was documenting...
EB: All these other big personalities as well.
MC: Right. And it just became so much fun. I used to get butterflies in my stomach before the gigs. I wasnt going to be surprised; I knew what I was going to see. But it was just so exciting. So here I am taking pictures and I'm hearing Rocket Queen for the first time. Its one thing when you do some covers and a couple of originals but all of a sudden you start writing these new ones that are just really, really, good songs. Youre taking pictures going, What am I hearing? Then you get home and you listen to the tape and you go to that song and you hear it two or three times and youre like, Wow, we have a Led Zeppelin here. They could do no wrong. It all worked! The vocals, the melodies, the lead guitar, the drums it was the first attempt and it didnt even need tweaking, it was there. Every now and then youd hear a song for the first time and Axl, the next time theyd play it, would change a couple lyrics, or some of the lyrics werent completed. The first time they played My Michele there were some verses simply missing. They went without vocals. But, other than that, pretty much, they knew what they wanted.
EB: In Reckless Road, Marc, you write, My goal here is to let everybody that likes this band or even if you dont like the band see the making of one of the greatest records ever made.
MC: Its interesting, Ive met some people that when I told them that I did this book they take a look at it and theyre the least likely Guns N Roses fans just because theyre into different kinds of music like jazz or whatever, but they respect whats there. Theyre glad its there to be documented and to watch history in the making. Its the making of one of the greatest records ever made. Ive met a couple people that really, not that they hate the band, they just dont like that kind of music at all. But they can appreciate that its been documented. Like at Canters, a lot of the employees got books and they have never even heard of Guns N Roses. Some of the older waitresses, theyre 65-years-old and how could they possibly know what this is? But because I'm involved in it, theyre interested in it. I have a book all of a sudden and they want to read it. So they take it home to read it and theyre sucked into it and cant stop.
EB: The band is as seductive in this book as the band was on stage. The book also states, Launching a successful rock band in the 80s required three ingredients: a dream, some talent, and die hard ambition. Were those really the three most important things back then?
Slash: Well, because of the climate of what was going on in Hollywood at the time, which was really excessive, commercial glam-metal kind of deal, everybody was getting signed. Motley Crue had already gotten big and famous and Ratt was coming out and then there were all these fuckin offshoots of that, cruising up and down Sunset Boulevard. We were sort of like the ugly ducklings of that whole thing. We didnt fit in with any of it. We were the black sheep and we enjoyed that; we loved the fact that we were the scary band out of the bunch. We hated the rest of them and we provided a kind of entertainment that was very seedy. If you asked us if we were extremely talented, [laughs] I dont think we would have looked at it that way. Really, when it comes down to it, Id say blind ambition, desire, and the integrity and the passion for the music was probably the most important thing. There was a lot of integrity in the band and there was a lot of really focused passion for what every individual did everything about the songs was really driven from the heart.
Looking back, there was definitely something unique going on which turned out to be a lot bigger than what most of our peers were doing. We were a gang of five that was a force to contend with. We were a 24/7 experience. We lived with each other and were together all that time. Everything we went through, which was a lot, we did together and thats what strengthened that bond. It was really important as to what the band sounded like it was a collaborative effort, every single song. Then we became very successful at that time but we were this vagabond bunch of drunken gypsies that sort of stuck together. But we were still pretty naïve really in a lot of ways.
MC: You want to hear the funny part to that? Jason Porath actually wrote that part in the book. And, in the manuscript I have, the third thing was Slash [laughs]. He actually wrote the word Slash but he changed it on his own before the book came out because he though it was a little bit too much Slash serving. Plus, the rest of the band had plenty of talent so he changed the word to "talent". The truth is, Izzy would be the backbone of a lot of those songs but Slash tweaked those songs if Slash werent there, who knows? Slash would put the funky punch into it. Like My Michele, he added those four little jerky parts to change the song. Plus, you already know what he could do in the studio with his leads. Even if he had nothing to do with writing the song -- like November Rain, that was Axls song -- Slash comes in and puts the leads in that just rip you to pieces. So, he wasnt far off when he put and Slash. Its a good ingredient to have in the mix [laughs]. Slash will always call me after a gig and Ill always tell him what I thought of it, good or bad, and he always gets exactly the truth out of me. Hes always very modest about it. Whenever I say, That was great, that was great, hes very modest about what his talent is. He never wants to reveal how good he really is. After doing the Use Your Illusion tour for two years and playing big stadiums, theres a certain amount that goes to your head that puts you in a rock star mode and on a pedestal. But as far as the actual talent, they were always modest about it.
EB: Another part in Reckless Road states, The eventual merging of the Appetite lineup of Guns N Roses can be more easily attributed to chaos theory than a straight forward chronology.
MC: Yeah, thats pretty much the way it went down. There was no loyalty. Like Vicky Hamilton says in the book, they were trying on band members like clothes. You hung around people that were into the same music you liked and you jammed together. You found a garage and you jammed in that garage and if it worked, great. If it didnt work then you moved on. Eventually, these five musicians found each other and, on top of finding each other, they went on that little road trip to Seattle which made them a little bit closer. At the same time, they knew they were the best at what they did. And the music industry sucked; there was nothing going on. Motley Crue was really the only band left and that wasnt enough to make a whole scene. There was really nothing going on and Guns N Roses just came by and changed everything, putting the f-word on the record it was really ballsy [at the time] and a lot of it has to be credited to Tom Zutaut for allowing them to do that because Axl was at the point where he was going to change the lyrics. Tom said, No, leave it alone.
MTV had a lot to do with it. The band had sold like 200,000 records underground and it was kinda dying out and MTV wouldnt play the video. David Geffen pulled a favor and called in an executive at MTV and they said, No, we cant do it because we dont want to lose our commercials because theyre known as drug addicts and they look like theyre going to rape my daughter that kind of thing. They didnt want bad press out of it. So, they played the video on a Sunday night at like six in the morning Eastern Time and the switchboard blew up. Then, that next week, they got put right into Top 10 rotation for Welcome to the Jungle and from that point on they started selling records, like 200,000 a week. So, they went a whole year before the record even went to number one. Appetite For Destruction wasnt just one song; the whole record is good. Thats why its going to stand the test of time. And another reason why is because its so raw and natural. And another reason why is because they were living on the streets. Its the fact that youre getting the raw energy and it wasnt tampered with. What they wrote was ready to go.
EB: On a personal note about your friendship, it says in the book that in 1985 Axl asked Marc to talk to you, Slash, about not getting drunk before a show. Was it unfair of him to put Marc in that kind of position as a mediator?
Slash: Yeah
EB: Or was he just the only one you would listen to?
Slash: Well, no I think theres been many times that Axl has reached out to different people like my mom or my dad or girlfriend or Marc or something like that. But nobody wants to try and tell me what to do so it is very uncomfortable.
EB: No one wants to be the middleman between you and Axl!
Slash: Yeah, its never worked. If somebody like Marc or my dad actually does approach me just to sort of follow through with carrying the message, its done very delicately [laughs]. Its not really effective [laughs]. Thats funny though.
EB: What do you think has enabled you and Marc to stay friends after so many years of chaos?
Slash: Well, because the chaos never had anything to do with Marc so our relationship has always been intact. He never really had to deal with the out of control me he never put himself in that place. He never was judgmental; he was real objective. That always made me feel like he never crossed that line with me and so Ive always had a respect for him and I would never rub him the wrong way because of that mutual respect. I never did anything to take advantage of him or make him overly uncomfortable or expose him to the darker stuff that was going on behind the scenes. He was never forced to be around that. So weve always had that mutual thing for each other.
EB: Thats once in a lifetime, man.
Slash: Yeah. And to this day, if he calls me, he can ask me for anything. He called me this morning all freaking out trying to get all this stuff done. I said, Marc, dont worry about it. [Laughs]
MC: The thing about me, any friends that Ive made over the years, I still have. If they need something, Im there. And if I need something, theyre there. Im a good person to be friends with because I'm an easygoing guy. Slash has always kept in touch. The friendship has always been there.

Yesterday while I was walking somewhere I heard a strange bird call that I didn't recognise, I looked up and something pale fluttering around the rooftops. It had a long tail and for a minute I wondered if it was a kestrel but quickly I realised it wasn't a british bird but some poor little escapee. It was a cockatiel! I suppose it must have got out of it's cage somehow. It's maybe a good thing to escape from a cage but I don't suppose captive birds get on very well in the wild. There are some semi-naturalised colonies of parakeets in London, escaped pets which ended up breeding in Hyde Park! I imagine usually that a bird which is very obviously coloured, unlike all our little grey and brown birds, would be liked to be eaten by a crow or a bird of prey or a gull. I did wait for a very long time trying to will the little bird to come down from the roof but he just sat up there for hours. I looked out the window at him while I attended the class I was at. By the time I finished he was gone though. I was imagining he would just fly down and I could take him home and look after him so I was disappointed it didn't all pan out like the sweet film I always with my life was.
It was one of these little fellows, isn't it sad to think of him wandering around lost in the city? I hope he might find his way somewhere nice -
When I was looking up pictures of cockatiels you see that all of them are taken in some artificially lit room against painted walls or in a cage, so different from when you look up a to see pictures of a wild bird. It's quite sad I suppose. We love little creatures so much and want to possess them but maybe it's not the right thing to do. I love birds so much and it would be amazing to be able to be friends with one but I would never want to trap them. I suppose that was why I was excited at the prospect of saving the cockatiel because it seemed to give me allowance for doing so. Although maybe there is an argument for creatures living much longer and less difficult lives in captivity that fighting for survival in the wild but captivity is captivity. I don't suppose it's really possible to know. The anthropocentric view becomes confusing I think and it's an impossible trap to escape from most of the time.
Anyway, I am here to tell you something very grave and important. What a rowdy weekend! I had a blast hanging out with sexy local ladies Aadie, Ceres, Yulia, Tita, Rydell, Peatrie, Cruella, Alkaline and Femme. I loved being able to meet and interact with fans. You guys are killer!
I worked as a 2nd AD on this last film ... basically I'm in charge of making sure that the actors are where they need to be. Shanti was a dream to work with, and a total lifesaver, but getting the cast together was a nightmare .... if I learned anything, it's that I never want to work that closely with actors ever again.
Although I might be getting an internship with production designer David Brisbin this summer! It's still a big maybe, but production design is what I want to do, and I am damn good at it. Send me good vibes, guys? It would be killer experience for me.
I'm finally done my first year of film school. I can't believe it's over already. It honestly seems like just yesterday I sat down in my first class back in September, and some moron sat next to me and asked me for a pencil, and I was like, "bitch, you come to school and you don't bring a pencil? You are a fucking idiot, and I don't think we'll get along at all."
Three months later, that moron was my boyfriend It was only in hindsight that I realized that he didn't really need a pencil. Oh, life.
In other awesome news ... I'm going to be shooting a new set soon with none other than Dwam!! I have a killer theme that I think most of you can appreciate. I'm bursting with anticipation!
This was the last essay of the year ... I was writing about Gattaca and the ethics of genetic tampering, and this of course, had to be my conclusion. And not a single fuck was given that day.

Here I am... A little preview of who I am and this is just a glimpse. I wanted to just have fun and be me. We all have our story and I want to tell mine but you can't start a story without an introduction. The story is explosive, destructive, beautiful, collisions, variety, separating, happy, sad, tears, lights, colorful, loud but everything fuses at the end of each chapter. I have many mushroom clouds in my world and I embrace the previous ones and anticipate the ones that are to come.
