The first clip from The Avengers movie has arrived, and it features Black Widow being a total badass. To go along with the forty second trailer, ten new official wallpapers have been released as well. With the movie less than a month out, some fans have started committing to not watching any of more clips or trailers because they feel they are spoiling too much. If you were looking to save all the excitement for the theatre, you may want refrain from watching this clip or any of the others that come out over the next month.

Joss Whedon’s The Avengers debuts May 4, but first up we have Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods releasing in just over a week on April 13. A new TV spot for the Whedon’s sci-fi horror thriller has come out. Based on what we’ve seen so far, this movie stretches the limits of the horror genre beyond anything we could expect.

Star Trek 2 production is well under way, and Alex Kurtzman has given an update on how things are coming along. Beyond praising the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch’s new villain role, he also gave us a bit of the story, saying that the crew is still learning to work together and are still on the way to becoming the bridge crew we remember and love from the series.

The Hunger Games destroyed box office records, but there may be trouble ahead for the sequels. While all of the cast has signed on to reprise their roles in the sequels, director Gary Ross has not. Ross has been credited as part of the reason the movie did so well, but his compensation from the movie was less than would be expected for an Oscar-nominated director. There are rumors that his failure to sign is over a financial dispute.

Back in October, the world lost one of its most brilliant minds, Steve Jobs. Now there is a movie in the making called Jobs that will biographically feature his life and times. The big thing everyone is talking about though is that Ashton Kutcher is playing the part of Steve Jobs. Kutcher is most famous for his roles where he plays moronic characters such as Kelso from That 70’s Show. Now he is set to portray one of the greatest innovative minds of the modern world.

Doctor Who fans should set their dials to conspiracy, because it’s rumor time. It started as what many considered an April Fool’s Day prank, but it didn’t die there. Reports of the first female Doctor have flooded the internet, after UK paper the Daily Express made seemingly joke claims. However a mole has since said the Time Lord will regenerate as a female as a big plot twist timed for the show's 50th anniversary.



On Monday April 2, two different but equally awesome nerd channels premiered on Youtube. Geek & Sundry, a channel founded by Felicia Day, features several shows covering various geeky interests. It is also the new home of The Guild, which has an awesome new promotional music video that calls out nerd posers (see above). Other featured shows include Dark Horse Motion Comics, Wil Wheaton’s TableTop gaming show, Felicia Day’s video blog, and so much more.

The other channel of note is The Nerdist Channel, created by Chris Hardwick a.k.a. the Nerdist. Hardwick hosts a bowling show where he bowls against other celebrity groups for charity. One episode will even feature them facing off against the Geek & Sundry team. There are lots of shows still to premier on the Nerdist channel, including one hosted by Rob Zombie, a show hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, and a show with Neil Patrick Harris and Muppets.

Both the Nerdist Channel and Geek & Sundry are pioneering a shift towards quality internet television programming. Unlike cable, you can enjoy all of these shows for free as long as you can get on the internet. In return, all they ask is you hit subscribe to their YouTube channels so they can hopefully keep this kind of programming coming.

Mission Statement: Someone once said to me "Please never stop drawing naked ladies." And so far, I haven't.



Medium: Chalk pastels, ink, and watercolor.

Aesthetic: Oversaturated crumbly false color. Otherwise, I don't think I've developed an aesthetic yet. I keep at it in the hope an aesthetic emerges.



Notable Achievements: I designed a vodka bottle once. It was like a cubist rendering of an embrace warped into three dimensions and filled with sexy fermented potato juice. It would have been lovely, but the company that hired me went bankrupt and it was never made. I recently did a CD cover. Some of my pieces once hung in a group show. Art-wise, that is about it. I manage technology workers for a living. A long time ago I was an actor. I make these drawings now, when I'm not working, because I Iike the way the chalk feels, the clouds of loose technicolor dust I have to blow off the paper, talking to the women who sit for me, translating them into completely nonsensical colors.



Why We Should Care: What I hope is that there is something engaging about these pictures, that they catch your eye the way they did mine as I drew them. It's really no more complicated than that. Most of what I do is an attempt to grab people with colors and say "isn't this lovely?" There's no statement or deeper meaning. I kind of don't think there needs to be. People don't walk away from drawings philosophically engaged, they don't remember a clever argument they had to read a card to understand. But just the image, light and texture, that lingers in memory, that's what this is for.

I go back a long way with the writer/directors of the fourth American Pie movie. I saw their first film Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle months before it was out and interviewed them for a screenwriting magazine that is long defunct. In fact, we met at the Newsroom Café outside of New Line Cinema, which is also now defunct, absorbed by Warner Brothers.

Fresh out of college, the writing duo was ambitious and enthusiastic about entering the comedy landscape. Back in 2004, the R-rated comedy was just making a comeback with Old School, and Wedding Crashers and The Hangover were years away. As ‘80s children and comedy junkies, they wanted to givethis generation the comedies that would play every night in dorm rooms across the nation.

We got to catch up every time they wrote a new Harold and Kumar movie, one of which they directed. Now they’ve been handed the reigns of American Reunion. They decided to bring back every single actor from the first American Pie, including those who were not included in American Wedding. They also ignored the four straight to video movies under the American Pie brand.

In Reunion, Jim (Jason Biggs) go back to their high school reunion and see what’s become of their classmates, an clash with the current high school seniors. A virginal 18-year-old is throwing herself at the happily married Jim, and he still ends up caught naked in the kitchen, and later practicing dominatrix role play with Michelle (Alyson Hannigan.) These days, the guys have grown up themselves, with marriages and children of their own. They still like to tell dirty jokes though about penises and MILFs.

SuicideGirls: When you started writing an American Pie reunion movie, was your first thought: How are we going to top pie fucking?

Jon Hurwitz: In the case of Jason’s full frontal moment, that was one of those things that we wrote the script and we were really happy with it, the studio was happy and then Jason read the script and he was really happy. But I think we all felt we’re missing one big kind of crazy moment. For Jason it’s like an added humiliation that he can have in the movie so he just said to us, “I’ll do anything. Whatever you need of me, I’m there. We just need one more outrageous thing.” The two of us looked at each other and went, “Okay, I think we can do that.” We came up with his penis smashed against the pot lid, called him up an he was on board right away.

SG: And that is really him?

JH: That is really him. That is him. It’s funny because it’s the fourth penis we’ve had in one of our movies and it’s the first real actual penis.

SG: Is it just natural that Michelle becomes a full on dominatrix?

JH: Yes, exactly.

Hayden Schlossberg : She’s obviously the character that’s the kinkiest of all the female characters. Part of it was figuring out where she is today and we thought okay, she’s in the boring mom role. But deep within her she has this dirty naughty side, and it was fun to be able to let that out.

JH: It was fun because one of her famous lines is, “Say my name, bitch.” So she was already kind of dominating there so we’re like you know what, it’d be fun for her to sort of expand upon that. They’re going back to in a sense the scene of the crime. It’s a Stifler party so she’s ready to take it up a notch.

SG: I always wondered when she stuck her flute in her pussy, which end of the flute did she use. I’ve never had the balls to ask her.

JH: You know what, we haven’t asked her either.

HS: Probably the one that has the most little things coming out of it, the valves. She likes her flutes ribbed.

SG: Was it important to answer all the questions about the past, like Oz missed the wedding, and throw in a “one time at band camp,” and a “Stifler’s Mom?”

HS: Jon and I are franchise guys. We like being nerds about movies and obsess over each one so it’s our job as taking over this franchise to be able to know all the ins and outs that an American Pie nerd would. We know hardcore fans are going to be like, “Well, Oz wasn’t in the third one.”

JH: The thing is it was easy for us because we are hardcore fans. We are hardcore nerds about it so when we went to see American Wedding we were pissed off that Oz wasn’t there. Those are things that we kind of naturally put in there but when tackling the movie or any sequel in our opinion, you try to make it its own movie. You try to make it where if people haven’t seen the prior movies that they’ll watch it and hopefully they’ll really enjoy it and they’ll get it as its own movie, but if you are a fan of the franchise there’s a whole other layer of comedy, either nostalgia or just references that you’re able to pick up on.

SG: Why has reference become a dirty word in comedy these days?

HS: I think people are afraid that if you haven’t seen the prior movies that you won’t understand this movie. For us, that’s absolutely an important thing. Every movie needs to stand alone. I don't think that you need to have seen Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle to like Guantanamo Bay or the Christmas movie. That being said, we think it’s important that you’re rewarded for your viewership of these movies. That’s an important thing for us to have things for the fans, but at the same time it needs to be its own movie.

SG: You didn’t mention Sherman became principal of the school though.

HS: Because once we acknowledge the world of the DVDs, then we probably have to acknowledge some other things. There’s some information about Stifler, Jim and Michelle in those movies that ran counter to what we wanted to do with the characters.

JH: There’s a little bit. There are a few things here and there but for us, those stories weren’t about our characters, the original cast members. Those were stories about other characters so those references came out.

HS: It’s an alternate universe. There’s some shift in the space time continuum where that happened and then all of a sudden things got right.

SG: Dealing with the theme of changing of the old guard in high school, what does it mean for comedy when that generation experiences the new high school kids?

HS: We like the generational conflicts. There’s just something about “these darn kids today.” For us, because we were kids when we were writing Harold and Kumar, we were just out of college and our whole thing was writing for a young audience. Now you’re getting older and there’s this new crop of kids, it’s like who the fuck are you? We have in Harold and Kumar Christmas this confrontation with Kumar and this 13-year-old kid over Karate Kid and which is the true Karate Kid, the one with Ralph Macchio or the one with Jackie Chan. For us there’s not even a contest but every generation has their differences and we like the idea of all of a sudden these guys who are in their 30s back in their hometown in American Reunion get into a fight with these younger kids.

SG: But even in this movie, the characters look back lovingly at high school. I imagine guys like you and me are doing way better as grown ups than we did in high school.

JH: You know, it’s funny though. There’s a certain fondness, at least for me, like a fondness for high school. Even people who are like the bully or somebody who was a dick to you in high school. They’re now to me with distance, they become like a character from the past. You get some perspective.

HS: You’re able to get on with your life in enough of a way, unlike Patton Oswalt’s character in Young Adult.

When he thinks about the past, he hates the bully. Luckily we didn’t have such a horrific time at high school that we’re not afraid to revisit, but I know what Jon’s talking about. Just thinking about these characters who you hated, with time and distance there’s actually something warm and fuzzy when you think about them because now that bully or that asshole is sort of a nostalgic [character.]

JH: I just remember I went to a wedding, and there was a guy who was known as one of the main dicks in our high school. First of all, outside of my interaction with him, I heard that he realized that he was a dick in high school. He grew up to recognize that he was there and when I came to the wedding, he asked my friend, the groom, “Was I a dick to Hurwitz?” Because he knew. I think as people get older, most people, not all people, but most people probably have regrets if you were a jerk in high school, and have moments that really made you upset but now it’s like I was a kid. Everyone’s just trying to find themselves and find out who they are, but when a group gets together at a reunion, usually all the drama of the past sort of disappears and it’s like oh my God, I remember that time. Because the truth is it was a time when you weren’t worried about paying the rent and you weren’t worried about your mortgage or where your kid’s going to go to school. You were worried about trying to lose your virginity or do okay on a test. It was a whole different kind of time of life.

SG: It’s certainly fun to reconnect but there’s no part of me that wishes I were still in high school.

JH: Oh no, I would agree with that. I definitely feel that way.

SG: 21 Jump Street also commented on how different high school is now than even 2005. Is this a time when we’re seeing everyone look back?

JH: You get a sense of the way certain things have changed but I think at the core, the thing that’s interesting is I think that teenagers today are probably not that much different at their core than teenagers when we were in high school, but the world around them is different in a certain way and it shapes them and shifts in different directions. Nowadays people may be thinking that it’s cool to dress like Snooki but before our time even, Madonna was really sexy and doing crazy things.

HS: Are you saying Snooki’s sexy?

JH: I’m saying Snooki is damn sexy.

HS: That’ll be the headline. We’re on Suicide Girls, so.

SG: Yes, that will be the pull quote.

HS: Girls today are committing suicide a little bit more frequently.

SG: Social suicide.

JH: Exactly.

SG: What do movies like Project X do for comedy?

JH: I saw Project X.

HS: I didn’t see it.

JH: I personally really enjoyed Project X. I don't think it’s a perfect movie but to me it’s classic in a lot of ways. It just has the attitude and the energy of today’s youth. To me it’s like three guys who feel a little bit invisible in their high school and they just want to be cooler. You look at whether it’s some element of the characters in American Pie, look at Finch who’s wanting to be out there or the characters in Risky Business or Revenge of the Nerds. There’s something classic about the core guys in there, but there’s a certain style that I think Project X has that’s really fun, from the music to the way it was shot. I don't think all of a sudden it’s all going to be found footage comedy and it doesn’t really feel like a found footage movie to me when you watch Project X in a lot of ways. They hired a guy to document their night and it was fun to see the different things that they did there, but I think it’s just this generation’s version of an underdog story in high school and it spiraling out of control.

SG: In your movie Stifler’s party isn’t cool anymore. Is this the end of the Project X/Hangover era of outrageous party comedies?

HS: I don't think so because everybody likes to party and everybody likes outrageous comedy. I think the art that we have, the world that we’re in is all about finding the new outrageous joke. There’s always going to be something that shocks an audience and it’s our job to figure out what that is.

JH: What was fun to do with the Stifler thing is when you are in your 30s and you go to a party, it looks kind of like the party Stifler is throwing there. He didn’t expect it. He’s like okay, I’m going to get all this stuff, I’m going to get all this booze, everybody’s going to be back and he just assumed it’s going to be raucous like back in the day. He looks around and everyone’s drinking wine and I’m actually at the party with my wife and my baby. I don't know if you caught me there but basically that’s what happens when you’re in your 30s. The parties are less raucous but if you track Stifler’s party, it just kind of devolves as more time goes on. Stifler throws his energy into it and he brings Jim’s dad into the fold and it gets out of control again.

SG: Do you have a whole backstory for the rift that broke up the MILF guys?

HS: There’s different interpretations. A lot of people assume that the John Cho character is gay because of his mustache and the way he gets excited about Oz’s body so that maybe there’s another guy that got in between them.

JH: Or MILF Guy #1 maybe went off with a woman or something.

HS: We do have a deleted scene with the two of them that doesn’t really explain much more.

JH: The deleted scene was just when the guys enter, John Cho is greeting people at the reunion. We had MILF Guy #1 walks in there and John looks kind of stunned to see him. He’s like, “I thought you weren’t coming.” And MILF Guy #1 goes, “Maybe I changed my mind.” And he bumps his shoulder.

HS: It’s beyond you see that not only they aren’t talking but there’s something really tense there.

JH: There’s a real antagonism. I don't think it’s necessarily the gay thing. To me these are two guys who just happen to love watching MILFs together. Something happened over the years where one of them lost their way or disappointed the other one, as MILF Guy #2 says, “Friendship is a two way street.”

HS: If you think about that, clearly he feels that MILF Guy #1 wasn’t there for him in some sort of way.

JH: Maybe one day there will be the MILF Guy spinoff movie.

SG: What are you doing next?

JH: We’re not sure yet. It really depends. We have a lot of original ideas. Obviously the last two years we’ve been really spending on American Reunion and A Harold and Kumar Christmas. So we would come up with lots of ideas during that time, we opened up all these new documents. Now we’ve been looking at all these ideas. You never know if we’ll revisit one of these franchises, whether it’s another one of these, another Harold and Kumar.

HS: We just have a great time working on them. It’s great to work on a franchise because you have this fan base that gets excited for the movies and you get to explore the characters. It’d be great to start a new franchise. I think that’s our ultimate goal but we still love Harold and Kumar and now American Pie. Anything’s possible.

SG: What are some things you still want to do as comedy buffs?

JH: We feel like we have a really incredible action comedy in us that we’ve been developing for a while and haven’t had the time to really focus on, so that’s one thing that I think you’ll be seeing from us. We have an idea that we know we love and we think that audiences are going to love too.

SG: Is there something you’re missing in the current crop of action comedies?

HS: The truth is I think the problem is that they’re all derivative of the movies from the ‘80s or they’re homages to the ‘80s action comedies or they’re satires of the ‘80s action comedies. We want an action comedy for today, 2012, 2013, something that is different and new. I think that’s ultimately the thing because a lot of the “action comedies” out there, like is 21 Jump Street an action comedy? I just think of that as a TV show remake sort of thing. We’re thinking something more in the Bad Boys or Die Hard kind of like an action movie that has a fun comedy character in it too.

American Reunion opens April 6.

How did you first get involved with SuicideGirls?

A close gay friend of mine introduced me to SG for the first time. It was the summer of 2005.
 A month later I shot my first set as a model with Albertine. Three years later I did my first one as a photographer.



What's your background photography-wise?

I have a BA in Fine Arts. I did photography, video, and sculpture. Back then I mainly shot in analog. The dark room was my favorite place in the whole University.

What was the first photo you had published?

A self shot photograph which was part of my last year examination project.
It got published on a Dutch catalogue.



How would you describe your style?

My style is continuously mutating. It's in motion. My photography is pretty varied as is my style. Shooting for the site has definitely changed it. I used to be always an art photographer. I worked with models but on a different level. My photographs were mainly black & white images.
 SG gave me the possibility to embrace a new layer. Capture models' sexyness, beauty and creativity through their body, moves, peculiarities.

What gear do you use?

I currently use a canon 5D Mark II. I have a few lenses, which I like to switch depending on what the subject is and where I’m shooting. I also have an old Nikon F2 which I’ve started to use again lately, and a fewmore, but due to work and media I mostly use my Canon.

How important is Photoshop in your final images?

Since I work on digital images Photoshop has become essential for color correction and to adjust lighting. Needless to say, Photoshop and Lightroom have both become the digital dark room of our future, although, for the most part, good results should always be done ideally with the settings on the camera itself, before you pull the trigger.




What gives you ideas and inspires you to create such amazing sets?

Certainly the model, she is my very first inspiration. I do travel quite often and I am a big observer of spaces, landscape and whatever my eyes capture. Music videos, literature, magazines are a big inspirations as well.

What is your favorite image?

I couldn't pick just one.

Tell us why it's your fave and how you achieved it?

I love working with Janette and everything we did together. She is one of my favorite models I’ve been collaborating with. She is an artist, a performer, and a friend.




Is there anybody or anything you would love to photograph that you haven't?

I want to photograph a lot more girls, people, anyone who communicates a feeling, a sensation, weather positive or not. People that can tell a storywith their facial and body expressions.
 Among the SG models, probably the first one who comes to my mind would now be Vice. I have adored her since I joined the site. Manko is another artist I would love to collaborate with.
 I fell in love with her mind, her thoughts, her creativity. She is so inspirational in so many ways. Chunny has intrigued me since always. Or Amina, just to mention another one.

At the movies, Tarsem Singh is best known for edgy, darkly visual thrillers like The Cell and Immortals. For fans of those movies, the family friendly fairy tale Mirror Mirror seems like a left turn. For Signh it is not.

The director won acclaim for his music videos and industry clout for his commercial work. Notable videos include R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion.” In his commercials, you wouldn’t know Singh was there because it’s all about the client’s product.Mirror Mirror is a new version of the Snow White fairy tale, the first of two with Snow White and the Huntsman coming this summer. Singh’s version is a traditional costume fantasy, albeit with his own unique visuals and a feminist twist. This Snow White (Lily Collins) saves Prince Charming (Armie Hammer) with HER kiss instead of vice versa. She also becomes a kick ass heroine with the seven dwarves. Snow sings a Bollywood style musical number over the end titles. Julia Roberts plays the evil queen, who actually enters the mirror into an alternate realm where her reflection cautions her against evil magic.

On the press circuit with his stars, Singh has been revealing he did not intend to make four visual movies, and that he had some ideas about stepmothers he could not fit into the movie. So when we had a chance to speak with him privately over the phone, we were able to ask him to elaborate personally on the ideas in his latest film.

SuicideGirls: What is the hardest thing about achieving your visual style?

Tarsem Singh: Hmm. Hmm. That’s a bloody loaded question. Okay. Well, if it isn’t material that’s generated from me and it’s coming from somebody else, the hardest thing is to tell the guy that I can’t show you what I mean right now but can I show it to you later? Usually when you’re writing, when the script is everything, people can write it and show you what they mean. They can draw it. I can’t illustrate. All I can do is talk about a tone and say, “Okay, I get it. This is hardcore and going to be violent” or “No, this is a family film. I’d like it to be charming.” Things like that don’t translate as easily as scripts or straight storytelling does. When the stuff is visual, unless you have something like a 500 lb. gorilla like Julia Roberts on your side who will just say, “Let the man do what he wants,” it’s difficult. I’d say it’s a tough one. You just dance and hope nobody notices when you’re tripping up.

SG: How about in the execution from your head to what appears on screen?

TS: That’s what I live for. That would be like saying, “So how do you breathe?” If I could define it I think I might stop breathing. It’s usually very far flung. It’s usually taking an idea and just saying, “Well, this is the entrance of the idea. We meet the queen, she’s kind of using people like pawns but I don’t want it to be chess. So what can we do that’s fun to make?” Then we sit down and somebody says, “Well, they can be playing some sort of a square game, blah blah blah blah blah. They could be playing BattleShip.” Okay, Battleship with the rules of chess but the things are on people’s heads. Okay, that makes sense. That’s kind of how we throw things around because they don’t come to me on paper in that form. It’s just the queen saying certain things and I say, “Here you could put a ball. Here you could put a stylized chess game. Here you could put that.” That’s kind of what I live for.

SG: How did you develop the idea of the mirror world that she enters?

TS: Ooh, tough one. That one went all around because for me, that was the defining thing for the film for me that I just said it can’t be that you just go “Mirror mirror” and then there’s a mirror with the voice of James Earle Jones that tells you what to do. I just said you can’t go there, so what do we do with it? It originally used to be that she had a sister who did all this black and everything and she didn’t. I was okay with that idea too but eventually when it came down that in the mirror, I kind of sold it to myself and to Julia much more along the tone of no matter how evil a person is, no matter what they do, they always have a way of justifying what they do. To a certain extent, some people outsource their evil from themselves. It can be I heard voices, the devil made me do it, blah blah blah blah. So I said take an approach like that and think almost like a shrink that’s telling you, “Go ahead and do the bad things you need to do.” That would be look in the mirror and there’s the idealized you. You’re almost disassociating yourself from what you do so that the evil that you’re going to do, you can’t blame on yourself. So it’s literally a bit of a Freudian approach to it an split the two up and that was as good for me as having a sister that did black magic and the queen being separate. So that actually changed once we were almost on the shoot. We were always questioning what does it look like? And everybody was saying go to just the simplest one. Let her just go and talk to the mirror. I just thought no, the visual answer can’t be that simple. Then literally I embraced it when literally instead of talking to the mirror she goes into the mirror and then arrives in a landscape where she has a monologue with her inner self. Once I sold that to myself and everybody bought it, then it was just a question of designing it but that was the toughest one actually. It took the longest way to get there.

SG: What was the idea of stepmothers that you wanted to include in the movie?

TS: It wasn’t so much my idea but it was the original idea of Snow White before the brothers Grimm. It was always the idea that girls past a certain age should not live in the home with their parents. It’s just not right so the morality tale that came out of that one, was the mother was starting to become evil to Snow White. But when the brothers Grimm came along, sensitive to the storytelling of that period they were the original studio heads. They said, “No, no, no, this is not acceptable to people. Let’s make her stepmother because it’s easier to make her evil then.” I think unfortunately 200 years later, there are so many stepmothers out here and most of them are very nice. So I just think the times have turned. It would’ve been nice because I would have just had to go back instead of making the stepmother evil, it shouldn’t have been a stepmother. But when you kind of define or redefine genre, there’s only so many rules you want to break before it becomes not a recognizable part. You have a queen that’s likeable in this particular instance, that’s enough. You don’t have to make the prince an ugly guy who then becomes charming. He just was a charming guy. Snow White was the purest good girl you could meet. So it was muddying the water and actually taking the stepmother element out, just because it’s so iconicly clear to people, as much as you show an older woman giving an apple to a young girl, anyone will tell you what that is. That’s Snow White and that’s her stepmom so it was just that. It was too ingrained in the psyche to try to change. I was trying to figure out a way to change it but we never did.

SG: It’s been an evil queen for so long that you can’t even change it back to a stepmother.

TS: She is her stepmother. In the original one she kills the evil queen really badly. You really can’t go back to those pages because people’s appetites change. Certain things that they’re okay to read in literature, they can’t see visually or it’d be too graphic for them. You just adapt to the times. The queen dies a really horrible death. I think they boiled some shoes they put inside a furnace and she has to dance until she dies. You show that, even in animation it wouldn’t be acceptable, forget about real film. It’s just that certain things people are okay to read, but if you show it to them they wouldn’t. Like most people are okay to eat lamb, but if you show them a lamb being killed and they balk at the idea.

SG: That’s sort of like The Hunger Games, a very graphic book but a PG-13 movie.

TS: They would just lose the audience. They must’ve done something smart because it seems to be working for a very large group of people. I haven’t seen the film. I intend to tonight.

SG: Was shooting the Bollywood song like doing a music video?

TS: No, for me it was very much an integral part of the film. It’s just one of those things that once we did it, I had that specific song in mind. I had it exactly that as an ending. Unfortunately specifically the parents, specifically the dads would not accept it. They just said, “No, this is a fairy tale, it doesn’t go there.” They didn’t have the license in their culture to allow that in. I tried moving it here, I tried to make it look like people used to sing and dance before and they wouldn’t have it. In the end, the numbers just the way the studio was showing it to me was so much more. The children loved it. They just said the problem is they come with parents and if the parents don’t talk to each other and say, “It’s a good movie,” it won’t work and it’s only harming us. So we took it out. And in the end, when the international people saw it, they said, “In our culture it works” because the song is not part of the titles, it’s part of the movie internationally. They’ve taken it out in America an at the last second I went to the studio and I said, “Listen, I gave you everything you asked for. This is so much part of my DNA. Can you put it in the titles?” At the last second we tried to find a pause, and in that pause I put the photographs of what the dwarves now do, which a friend of mine shot over the weekend, and they allowed me to put the song in the titles because that seems to be to a certain extent more palatable to an American audience. In the titles you can break certain rules.

SG: What part of the film would it be in in the international version?

TS: It’s about three minutes before it ends. Everybody turns to look at Snow White and nobody knows what she’s going to do. Is she sad, is she this? She just morosely walks into the center of it and breaks into a song and says it’s all right. Then everybody’s amazed by her because they have not danced for 10 years and they start dancing with her.

SG: Did you want to include that because you’re Indian or just a fan of those movies?

TS: No, I haven’t seen an Indian movie for 30 years. I’ve seen one actually. So it wasn’t that. I just like the spirit. The thing is you kind of make certain rules. With animation songs are probably more acceptable. Then you have musicals and then you have nonmusicals. There seems to be a rule for people and it just doesn’t look like there was enough appetite for it out there. I just wanted to do it because I just really as a kid this was a song that I’d heard a really kitschy Iranian version of it by a woman called Googoosh who was the original Lady Gaga in the ‘70s in Iran. I just said, “I’ve got to get this song and have Snow White sing it.” Google her and look at the song. She got it from another girl called Nina Hart who sang it in the middle of a Milos Forman film [Taking Off] on the titles. Check out those two version and they could not be more far away than what I wanted but they are brilliant.

SG: I’ve probably seen more Bollywood movies than you and I’ve only seen a few.

TS: No, I’ve seen hundreds but they’re all before 1979.

SG: Do you recommend any?

TS: Yeah, see Disco Dancer. See Sholay, the original one.

SG: Did Snow White have to become a fighting warrior in your version?

TS: She didn’t have to. That’s the only piece of wardrobe that me and Eiko [Ishioka] felt we didn’t really get correct because she was always supposed to end up in the Prince’s clothes but they didn’t fit her and blah blah so we kind of ended up making this in between. It was about empowering a girl as opposed to a princess sitting there waiting for the prince to come and get you. It made sense that basically she would start raiding with them but in a Robin Hood fashion as opposed to what they wanted which is just to be rich.

SG: You pointed out that nobody says this is a poison apple but we know. There seems to be an epidemic of overexplaining in movies. Can we get back to visual understanding?

TS: You won’t get that argument out of me. I get criticized for it all the time and I’m like, “Hey, if you can tell it visually, don’t talk about it.” You don’t have to build it up at all. You go to anybody and if you’re doing Superman, you just show this guy flying, somebody shows him a rock and he can’t fly anymore, you understand that’s kryptonite. It’s ingrained into the psyche of most people so you don’t have to have a scene where she says, “Give me that poison, blah blah blah.” You don’t need any of that. It’s wonderful when you see that with children, when they’re just getting happy for the movie ending when that comes in, they just have the air sucked out of them and they’re almost mouthing, “Don’t take the apple.” I was just thinking, “We didn’t even set up the apple.” They got it in two seconds.

SG: I was just worried you’d forget about the apple because you already take out the part where the prince kisses her back to life.

TS: Well, we kind of had that and we thought we know where the source material comes from, why not have fun with it? I had a much bigger scene originally that I was pushing for but it just required so much more time that it didn’t work.

SG: What was your scene?

TS: My thing was that she would eat the apple, like she would become disguised and Snow White would eat the apple. Now this is the original tale and I had always loved that idea, that she would eat the apple and then when she would die, everybody would tell him kiss her. He kisses her and she doesn’t wake up. Then everybody looks at him really suspiciously that maybe they weren’t in love. Maybe he doesn’t love her and Snow White’s dead. Then they pick her up and when they’re taking her away, one of the dwarves, the clumsy one trips and she falls and the apple was just stuck in her throat and comes out. So she gets up, everybody’s shocked that she didn’t even die, she turns and looks at the prince and thinks, “Oh my God, he kissed me back to life so he must love me” and she hugs him and he just tells the dwarves to shut up, I’ll take the credit for it. Then they continue singing and dancing, but it was just another step that I think for a kiddie movie, this was about the time limit. We couldn’t take it there.

SG: You’d said you only wanted to do three visual movies and now you have four, but why would you only want to have four visual movies?

TS: No, back to back. I think I will do more of them and I will do probably a lot more but I think now if I do one more, two more of this, best case scenario for me would be not a bad place to be. I’d just end up with Tim Burton’s rejects, in that area which is if it ain’t weird don’t give it to him. So I just have to mix it up. At least this one wasn’t an R-rated film so I said okay, now it’s good to go into that territory and then I’ll wait and think if there’s something that I can do because most people only know me from my work in films. I say no, I do the most conservative ads you can think of and I do really straight storytelling stories. I just haven’t done them yet for cinema so people think this is all I want to do. If I don’t mix it up now, it’s not a box I’ll be able to step out of. If I don’t mix it up now, I’ll probably be doing only visual films.

SG: What’s an example of a straight storytelling type movie?

TS: Any Haneke movie, any Kieslowski film, most Polanski films. Just straight drama that doesn’t rely on the fantastic or on composition or on the grace of the image.

SG: Something that focuses on the actors?

TS: Actors, story, script. That’s not particularly right now what I’ve done which is everybody’s very much a pawn on what the film looks like.

SG: What is your next film?

TS: Hopefully if it happens, in the next week we will know, but it’s a small film about a drone attack. It would look like almost three different wars, from the people who are flying the video planes that they’re flying on monitors they’re flying from Vegas and the bombing is happening over a village in Africa that they’re trying to stop some terrorists on, the politics involved in basically giving the go ahead for a project like that. It feels like three different things but it’s the same war and you have such a different perspective on what the result is. For some people it’s going to be like something coming from the sky and wiping you out. For others it’s like a really tense video game and the politics is politics.

SG: What is that called?

TS: Eye in the Sky. I’ll know within a week if that’s happening. I hope it is.

SG: Do you have any cast attached?

TS: No, basically there are so many characters in this it’s going to be an ensemble which is usually easier because one great role or two great roles, you get an actor and you’re off in running. This is the film.

SG: Do you still do commercials and music videos?

TS: I do commercials a lot. I did very few music videos. I just did them right out of school and then my musical taste unfortunately goes for music that probably doesn’t really have an outlet. It’s much more folk and classical. They don’t really have any music videos for those. It was never really a job. I did music videos because I loved them and then just moved on, and I love doing advertising because I love telling short tales and learning new toys every day.

SG: So you won’t be doing a video for an LMFAO song?

TS: I don’t know who they are, I’m so out of contemporary music.

SG: They sing a song called “Sexy an I Know It.”

TS: Well, that sounds good to me.
